Abstract
PURPOSE: To suppress the self-decomposition of alkali permanganates by contacting offensively odorous substances-containing gas with an acid aqueous alkali permanganate solution to which is added phosphoric acid, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing offensively odorous substances, e.g., ammonia, mercaptan, etc., is introduced into the first absorption tower 2 where it is washed with a washing water composed of the acid or alkali 5, the water 6, and circulating waste water, and then sent to the second absorption tower 3 where the gas from the first absorption tower is brought into contact with a washing water composed of the potassium permanganate aqueous solution 7, the mineral acid 8, the condensed phosphoric acids and their salts 9, and the circulating waste water. The manganese dioxide 15 formed as a by-product during the absorption operation is separated by the centrifugal separator 14, while the gas 4 deodorized is discharged to the air. Thus, it is possible to prevent the self-decomposition of alkali permanganates due to the presence of the by-product manganese dioxide by the addition of phosphoric acid, etc., assuring highly effective deodorization of offensive gases.
