Abstract
PURPOSE: To make an engine structure compact and light and to enhance its durability, by employing an arrangement in which opening and closing of an intake and an exhaust valves of a reciprocating engine is effected automatically in association with the movement of piston.
CONSTITUTION: Piston 1 is fitted in cylinder 2 in freely slidable manner. Intake port 3 is formed at the bottom of cylinder 2 and exhaust port 4 is formed at a side portion of cylinder 2. In the intake port 3, there are provided a valve 13 which is urged by spring 9 in a direction opening the intake port 3 and a valve rod 12 which urges valve 13 upward by spring 11 for closing the intake port 3. When the piston 1 comes near to the bottom dead center, valve rod 12 is moved downward by piston 1 so that intake port 3 is opened. Further, an elongated groove 20 is formed in the side face of piston 1, and a stopper pawl 17a of a ring spring connected to exhaust valve 16 is fitted in the groove 20. Therefore, exhaust port 4 is opened when piston 1 comes near to the top dead center and closed when piston 1 comes near to the bottom dead center.
