Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically change seawater into fresh water, by maintaining a plant under a high-degree vacuum and distilling the seawater at room temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Seawater of about 30°C is passed through a filter 15. The seawater is then sucked into an evaporation chamber 1 through a brine pipe 13 without being preheated. The evaporation chamber is maintained under a vacuum. The seawater is widely sprinkled over a horizontal heat transfer tube 3 from a seawater sprinkler 2. Steam, which is compressed by a compressor 10 and whose temperature is raised to about 35.5°C by supplying energy to the steam, is introduced into the heat transfer tube 3. Heat exchange is caused between the steam and the sprinkled seawater and heat balance is maintained between them. Evaporation is takes place on the outside surface of the tube 3 so that steam of about 33.5°C is generated. The former steam in the tube 3 is condensed. The condensed water flows out of the tube 3 and stays in a distilled water chamber 5. Incondensible gas such as air joins the condensed water introduced from the chamber 5 through a pipe 22. The mixture is sucked into a vacuum pump 19. The incondensible gas is released into the atmosphere through a gas separator 24. The condensed water is picked out of a pipe 26.
