Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve the improvement in the function as a light polarizing circuit element by alternately laminating the dielectric layers of a smaller thickness as compared to the wavelength of the light to be polarized and the complex dielectric layer having a sufficiently large dielectric constant as compared to these dielectric layers alternately. CONSTITUTION:The dielectric layers 1 having a sufficiently small thickness as compared to the wavelength lambda of the light to be polarized and the complex dielectric layers 2 similarly having a sufficiently small thickness as compared to the wavelength lambda of the light to be polarized and yet having a sufficiently large dielectric constant e2 as compared to the dielectric contant e1 of the dielectric layers 1 are alternately laminated to form a laminate 3. The mutually parallel opposing laminated end faces 4, 5 thereof are let incident and exit faces P1, P2 of light. If at this time the attenuation constants in the x-axis and y-axis directions are let alphax, alphay, then the relation of formula (1) is approximately obtained. Hence, the sufficiently large dielectric constant e2 of the complex dielectric 2 as compared to the e1 of the dielectric layer 1 makes the polarizing component in the x-axis direction out of the exit light obtainable from the end face P2 negligible with respect to the polarizing component in the y-axis direction, thereby enabling the polarizing function to be improved.
