Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce tough and hard steel material having no unevenness in hardness distribution in the direction of plate thickness, by heating a billet of a specific composition to a temp. not lower then 1,000°C to complete hot rolling at a temp. 800W1,000°C, then by quenching the steel material.
CONSTITUTION: A steel material contg. ≤0.3% C, ≤1.0% Si, ≤2.5% Mn, 0.005W 0.1% Al, or further contg. not more than 1% respectively at least one member of Ni, Cr, Mo in order to increase the strength, or 1% or less respectively at least one member of Nb, V, Ca, Ti, B for the purpose of grain fining of crystals just after the hot rolling and with the surface portion left not fined, or a steel contg. both groups of admixture elements described above is heated to a temp. not lower than 1,000°C. Then the steel material is hot rolled and the hot rolling is completed at a temp. 800W1,000°C. The rolled steel material is quenched at a rate 20W30°C/ sec., to produce tough steel having uniform hardness in the direction of plate thickness.
