Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible easy production of the multicore optical fiber of high strength and flexibility by adequately designing the construction of double crucibles in producing the multicore optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:A nozzle 6 of an oblong hole is provided on the outer crucible 4 of the double crucibles and a circular nozzle 7 on the inner crucible 5, respectively. A plurality of the nozzles 7 are arrayed in alignment and are so disposed that the center thereof comes to the centerline of the crucible 5. When the glass for core and clad is put in these crucibles and wire drawing and primary coating are applied by the double crucible method, then the multicore optical fiber strand having the cores 1, clad 2 and primary covering 3 is obtained. As a result of this, the optical fiber section becomes of oblong hole shape and therefore the optical fiber of high strength and flexibility may be obtained.
