Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the strength of a base material, and to improve the mechanical strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance etc. of parts connected by brazing, by joining locally heated iron base members with hard solder, then by forming a nitride layer in the surface layer of the members through nitriding.
CONSTITUTION: Iron base members made of carbon steel etc. is joined with hard solder through local heating such as torch brazing or high frequency brazing. The members joined by brazing is nitrided over whole surface layer excepting the heat affected zone of the members to form Fe-N-C nitride layer, hereby the surface is hardened. Hence softening of joined portion and the circumferential portion are prevented and the mechanical properties of other parts of the base metal are improved. Consequently, the members are in creased in strength without increase in thickness, i.e., the members show sufficient strength for practical use even if the thickness is not increased, thereby lightening the members, and reducing the material cost.
