Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve coupling efficiency by providing a thick film photo coupling body of a required refrative index on a substrate provided with a buried light guide. CONSTITUTION:A light guide 12 of a higher refractive index than that of a molten quartz substrate 11 and the refractive index distribution becomes of a maximum value in the position of a specified depth from the surface is buried and formed within the substrate by implanting helium ions so as to the low refractive index layer 17 remainus on the surface of substrate 11.
