Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve coupling efficiency by providing a thick film photo coupling body of a required refrative index on a substrate provided with a buried light guide. CONSTITUTION:A light guide 12 of a higher refractive index than that of a molten quartz substrate 11 and the refractive index distribution becomes of a maximum value in the position of a specified depth from the surface is buried and formed within the substrate by implanting helium ions so as to the low refractive index layer 17 remainus on the surface of substrate 11. Light entered the end face of a thick film photo coupling body 13 which is formed of a high polymer material such as acrylic resin or the like added with a photo sensitizing agent, is of a higher refractive index than that of the layer 12 and is thermocompression bonded to the layer 17 makes distribution coupling to the light propagating in the guide 12 by way of the layer 17. Hence, the incident light is coupled via the layer 17 which corresponds to the air layer using a prism or the like, thus the degradation in the coupling efficiency owing to misalignment of secional parts, etc. is prevented. As a result, the coupling efficiency may be improved.
