Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable optical fibers and optical guides to be connected with good coupling efficiency by so constituting the photo coupler that the second waveguide is laminated on the first waveguide so as to have a clad layer in common. CONSTITUTION:The second waveguide which has a clad layer 3 in common and has a coupling waveguide layer 4 and a coupling clad layer 5 is laminated on the first waveguide consisting of a substrate 1, waveguide layer 2 and clad layer 3. The refractive index of the coupling waveguide layer 4 is set at a value roughly equal to the standardized propagation constant of the first waveguide and the refractive index for the coupling clad layer 5 is so set that te film thickness of the coupling waveguide layer 4 becomes a desired thickness. In addition, the length L of the coupling waveguide 4 and clad layer 5 is so set as to satisfy formula I. Such constitution enables the light power from the optical fiber 6 to be led into the second waveguide and to be further migrated with good efficiency into the first waveguide.
