NEW MATERIAL:Compound expressed by formula I: (R and R2 are H or alkyl groups; R1 is alkyl or phenyl group; Ar is aromatic group, e.g. phenyl, thienyl group, etc.; X is O or acetal protecting group).
EXAMPLE: Methyl α-methylthio-α-[p-(2-thienyl-carbonyl) phenyl] propionate.
USE: Intermediates for pharmaceuticals.
PROCESS: Compounds of formula II are reacted with formaldehyde mercaptal S- oxides of formula III in the presence of a base to form compounds of formula IV, which are then reacted with acid chlorides, e.g. thionyl chloride, etc., preferably in the presence of a base at room temperatures to give compounds of formula V. The resulting compounds of formula V are reacted with alcohols of formula R2 OH in the presence of an acid at a temperature of room one to 150°C to afford the objective compounds of formula VI, which are alkylated, if necessary
