Abstract

PURPOSE: To shut off a recycle passage by an open/close unit in such a case as high- load running that it is not required to recycle exhaust gas, by installing the open/ close unit in the recycle passage upstream of a recycle valve.
CONSTITUTION: A valve 4 installed in an exhaust gas recycle passage 10 is opened or closed depending on the opening or closing of a control valve 3 installed in an intake passage 1. The open/close unit 6 is provided upstream of the recycle valve. A control valve position sensor 40 is connected to a control circuit for a solenoid valve 31. When the control valve 3 is almost fully opened, the sloenoid valve is de-energized to open a negative pressure chamber 26 of the open/close unit 6 to the atmosphere. The negative pressure chamber 26 is connected to a vacuum tank 32 while the solenoid valve 31 remains energized. A valve element 14 is displaced up and the open/close unit is opened while the negative pressure of the tank 32 is applied to the negative pressure chamber 26. The valve element 14 is brought into pressural contact with a valve seat 21 by the elastic force of a spring 28 when the negative pressure chamber 26 is opened to the atmosphere. Therefore, no carbon reaches the recycle valve 4, thus lengthening its lifetime
