Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a high pressure from acting on the downstream side of a load control valve, by employing such an arrangement that an EGR passage located on the upstream side of the load control valve in respect of the exhaust-gas flow is closed forcibly during high-load operation of engine when recirculation of exhaust gas is not required.
CONSTITUTION: During low-load and medium-load operation of an engine when it is necessary to control the load of exhaust-gas recirculation, negative pressure in the intake pipe is relatively high, so that a diaphragm 41 is moved upward against the force of springs 51, 52 by the suction vacuum introduced into a vacuum chamber 42 of a load control valve 2 via a pipe 49. Resultantly, a valve body 25 is moved upward and changes the sectional area of an EGR passage 21 together with an orifice 23. During high-load operation of the engine, on the other hand, the negative pressure in the intake pipe is lowered, so that valve body 25 is moved downward promptly by diaphragm 41 to close a valve seat 26. Here, since spring 52 is placed in a spring case 50 which is held in contact with a cover top 430, the spring constant of springs 51, 52 can be selected to be small in the high-load region of the engine for closing EGR passage 21 in reliable manner.
