Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently produce crystal-contg. blast furnace granulated slag by stepwise dropping molten blast furnace slag to cool and stir it in a reduced cooling time and charging inorg. metal oxide-contg. seeds to facilitate formation and growth of crystals, followed by granulation with water. CONSTITUTION:Molten blast furnace slag of 1,500-1,550 deg.C is stepwise and naturally dropped onto inclined spouts stepwise assembled to be cooled to a temp. around the melilite crystallization temp., usually 1,400-1,440 deg.C. At this time, each of the spouts is vibrated with a vibrator and cooled with water to reduce cooling time as well as to control formation and growth of solidified slag. The cooled slag is then charged with inorg. metal oxide-contg. seeds to facilitate formation and growth of crystals, and granulated by water quenching to obtain crystal-contg. blast furnace slag useful as fine aggregate for concrete. The seeds are of 300-100mu in diameter and less than 5% of them is charged into the slag when it is at a temp. between the melilite crytallization temp. and 70 deg.C lower than the temp.
