Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the artificial ballast of low water absorptivity, high specific gravity and low cost by discharging molten blast furnace slag into a slag receiving part by way of a chute of freely changeable angles of inclination and cooling the same while allowing the same to flow down in laminar form. CONSTITUTION:Molten blast furnace slag 2 is discharged from a slage ladle 1 by way of a sloped chute 40 and is allowed to flow down a sloped plate 3 consisting of plates or the like laid on formed ground 4. Here, if the smooth laminar flow is formed while preventing the formation of turbulence and splashes of molten slag by adjusting the angle of inclination of the chute to the optimum angle having beforehand determined empirically according to the composition, temperature, etc. of the molten slag, then the slag lumps obtained after cooling and solidification are extremely high in specific gravity and strength. Hence, it is possible to use these slag lumps as artificial ballast ideal suited for civil engineering and construction materials by disintegrating the same.
