Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent stress corrosion cracking at contact areas of stainless steel with high temperature corrosive medium, build up metal welding having smaller linear expansion coefficient than that of stainless steel is applied to near welded area of stainless steel and low-carbon steel.
CONSTITUTION: Austenitic stainless-steel linings 1 are welded to stainless-steel shaft bodies 3 with weld metal 2 at areas where shaft bodies 3 contact with corrosive medium. Prior to weld of linings 1, build-up welding 6 is applied to contact areas of linings 1 and cooling water, or each end of water chamber 5, using metal 6 such as INCONEL having at least same corrosion resistance as and smaller coefficient of linera expansion than those of austenitic stainless steel. Nest, first layers of welding 7 are applied using same INCONEL as build up metal 6, then linings 1 are welded to bodies 3 using weld metal 2 of austenitic stainless steel. This process causes compressive residue stress at weld joints to effectively prevent stress corrosion cracking.
