Abstract
PURPOSE: To dry terephthalic acid in a steady state efficiently with saving energy, by the use of a dryer comprising a separator or relatively large volume connected to a heating tube of relatively small diameter under critical conditions not to cause clogging of the tube.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic or water or both are removed from a slurry comprising terephthalic and acetic acids, and/or water to give dry terephthatic acid (TA). The slurry is fed to the heating tube 3 of relatively small diameter and converted into a mixture of solids and gases, which is released to the separator 7 to separate the solids from the gases. Acetic acid or water or both are removed to give dry powdery terephthalic acid. The TA content in the slurry is kept below the value determined by the formula: C=(2.5θ0.4+66)α+ (3.2 θ0.35+74(1-α) [θ is the inlet 4 temperature of the heating tube; α is the water content of the slurry medium, (1-α) is the acetic acid fraction].
EFFECT: Slurries with a high concentration can be dried.
