NEW MATERIAL:1-Epifortimicin of formula I (R1, R2 are H, -COR3, -CH2R3; R3 is aminoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminohydroxyalkyl, carbamoylaminoalkyl), and its physiologically permissible salts.
EXAMPLE: 1-Epifortimicin A.
USE: Antibiotic, being stable against alkali and thus scarcely decomposing even after standing in an aqueous solution of pH 11 at room temperature for over 2 hours.
PREPARATION: A protected derivative of fortimicin of formula II [R4 is protecting group for amino groups, R5 is H or protecting group for hydroxyl groups; R6, R7 are R4, -COR8, -CH2R8; R8 is substituted aminoalkyl(the substituted group shows the protecting group for amino group)] is oxidized by a method known in saccharide chemistry, then reduced to eliminate protecting groups, thus giving the objective compound of formula I.
