USE: Antibiotic. Active even against bacteria of Proteus genus and Pseudomonas genus to which there are few active antibiotics so far.
PROCESS: An SUM-4-producing fungus belonging to Micromonospora genus, e.g. Micromonospora.sagamiencis SU-2 (FERM-P No. 4230), is cultured in a nutrient medium, to collect SUM-4 from a cultured substance.
