Abstract

PURPOSE: A thermosetting resin with good workability and processability that is prepared by prereacting a polyfunctional cyanate ester and a polyfunctional maleimide so that the product has a specific gelation time and a specific infrared spectrum.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of a cyanate ester monomer as 2,2'-bis-(4-cyanatephenyl) propane or its prepolymer and a bismaleimide as the product from maleic anhydride and 4,4'-bisaminophenylmethane or its prepolymer is subjected to prereaction to form a thermosetting resin that has a gelation time of more than 30 sec at 170°C and an infrared spectrum satisfying equations I and II [x is the absorption intensity near 2270 cm-1 assigned to cyanate ester; y is the absorption intensity near 954 cm-1 assigned to maleimide, both of which are measured with 5% solution of the prereaction product in dimethylformamide].
