Abstract
PURPOSE:To purify a high temperature and pressure gas containing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia obtained coal gasificaton, by decomposing the gas in the presence of iron oxide and reduced iron catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A high temperature and pressure gas obtained from coal gasification is treated with a catalyst comprising iron oxide at a temperature of preferably about 650 deg.C, exothermically to remove sulfides, e.g. hydrogen sulfide. Nitrogen compounds, e.g. ammonia, in the gas are decomposed with a catalyst comprising iron in a reduced state endothermically at a temperature higher than and a pressure lower than the sulfide removal step to purify the gas. The reaction in the second step increases the gas volume by forming four molecules of nitrogen and hydrogen from two molecules of ammonia.
