Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the mechanical properties and machinability of a N-contg. high speed steel by heating the steel to a temp. range shown by a predetermined equation to austenitize the steel, followed by hardening to a predetermined hardened structure and tempering.
CONSTITUTION: A high speed steel contg. N≥0.2% obtd. by powder metallurgy, etc. is heated to the temp. range of Tm°CWTm°CW60°C calculated according to the following equation to be austenitized: Tm°C=1266-111C%-xN%+22.2V%+ 4.4W%+2.8Mo% (where x=15 in case of 0.2%≤N≤0.5% and x=30 in case of N>0.5%). The steel is then hardened to obtain a hardened structure having a matrix consisting of C≤1%, N≤1%, Cr; 3W5% W equivalent (W+2Mo)≥11%, and the balance Fe, followed by tempering. The above high speed steel pref. consists of C≤5%, Cr≤10%, Mo≤10%, W≤20%, V≤15%, and the balance Fe.
