Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a surface decarburized steel at low cost by a method in which oxygen concentration and dew point in the atmosphere of heating furnace are controlled and also steel slab stayed in the furnace for a specific period of time in the heating of the steel slab prior to hot rolling.
CONSTITUTION: In the heating of a steel slab prior to hot rolling, the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere is controlled to 0.1W3%, and also dew point is controlled to ≤25°C. Also, the residence time of the steel slab in the furnace is regulated to the period to the period of time, represented by the formula I(where x is draft). Under the condition, steel slab is heated for subjecting its surface to a decarburizing treatment, and a surface-decarburized steel having excellent sulfide-caused stress corrosion cracking resistance can be obtained. Also, if the treatment is combined with a surface softening treatment, its ammonia-caused cracking characteristic can be raised.
