36とファイルサーバ12との間のネットワーク28を
経由する情報転送を制御するネットワークオペレーティ
ングシステム14と、コンピュータシステムボード/バ
ス13によって転送される信号をモニタして警報状態を
判定し警報を発生してコンピュータシステムボード/バ
ス13を管理するためのシステムマネージャ22とを備
えているコンピュータネットワーク。 【効果】管理能力が増大し、実際に故障が起きる前に訂
正動作をするのに十分な時間に潜在的故障を知らせるこ
とができ、重大な故障をさけることができる。
Description
のマネージャ(manager;管理装置)に関し、特に、コ
ンピュータシステムのパフォーマンス並びに実際の及び
/又は潜在的コンピュータシステムの故障を表示する目
的物を本質的に(innately)モニタしかつ処理し、この
本質的にモニタしかつ処理される目的物に基づいて警報
状態を判定し、連携中(in-band)又は連携外(out-of-
band)モードのいずれかで警報状態を報告し、さらに、
遠隔位置からの調整的操作を提供するコンピュータシス
テムマネージャに関する。
望が、コンピュータネットワークの発展及び継続的な改
善の原動力となった。このようなコンピュータネットワ
ークのひとつは、ローカルエリアネットワーク(LA
N)といわれている。LANは、コンピュータ、プリン
タ及びその他の周辺機器を比較的近接しているもの、た
とえば同じビルあるいは互いに近くにあるビルの異なっ
たオフィス、の間での転送に好適なネットワークに結び
付けるハードウェア及びソフトウェアのシステムであ
る。LANと近似するものに、WAN(広域エリアネッ
トワーク)がある。WANは、ネットワークに含まれる
構成装置の少なくともいくつかをネットワークの残りの
構成装置とリンクするのに電話ネットワークが必要であ
るという点でLANとは異なっている。
ーティングシステムが存在している。その中には、ユタ
州プロブのノベル社(Novell Inc.)製造の“ネットウ
ェアシステム”、バニャンによる“VINESシステ
ム”、及び、ワシントン州のマイクロソフト社製造の
“LANマネージャシステム”がある。これらのネット
ワークオペレーティングシステムはネットワークマネー
ジャを含んでいるが、このようなシステムに含まれるネ
ットワークマネージャは、ネットワークマネージメント
(管理)機能を実行するためにデータをネットワークマ
ネージャに提供すべく、ネットワークオペレーティング
システムを一般には基にしている。ネットワークマネー
ジャはネットワークによって転送されたデータを基にさ
れているため、従来のネットワークマネージャは、ネッ
トワークの良好性を解析するために焦点を合わされてお
り、ネットワークの構成装置の良好性を解析するのには
適当ではなかった。

認識されている5つのネットワーク管理の機能エリア
(コンフィグレーション(機器構成)、故障解析、計
算、パフォーマンス及びセキュリテイー)のうち、ネッ
トワークマネージャは機器構成及びセキュリティを実行
するのに最良にされていた。ネットワークマネージャ
は、限られた故障解析を提供することもできるが、たい
ていの場合、故障が起こってからのものである。最近、
LANやWANのような、多数のプリンタ、コミュニケ
ーション、データベース、及びファイルサーバロケーシ
ョンを含むより大きなネットワークが発展している。こ
のことはコンピュータシステムの増加する構成装置をひ
とつのネットワークに結合することに向かわせ、管理能
力もより大きなものが求められるようになった。過去に
おいては故障警告で十分であったが、実際に故障が起き
る前に訂正動作ができるのに十分な時間に潜在的故障を
知らせるという情報への要求が高まった。
ュータ及び大規模アプリケーションのためメインフレー
ムを要求する(challenge)大型マルチファイルサーバ
ネットワークの発展において、コンピュータシステムの
パフォーマンスのリアルタイム解析の能力(capabilit
y)は、高度に管理能力を要求されるものである。さら
に、このようなネットワークは多くがWAN機器構成を
利用するので、遠隔コンソールからネットワークを管理
することのできる必要が増大している。また、システム
の少なくともひとつの主構成装置は残りのシステムから
離れていることが多いため、従って単一の管理コンソー
ルから全システムを管理することができないため、ロー
カル管理能力のトータルでの信頼性がこのようなシステ
ムに重大な損害を与えるであろう。

れたファイルサーバと、コンピュータステーションと、
コンソールと上記ファイルサーバとを結合するネットワ
ークバスとを備えるコンピュータネットワークである。
ネットワークオペレーティングシステム/ネットワーク
マネージャは、ファイルサーバとコンソールとの間の情
報転送を制御管理し、システムマネージャは、システム
バスによって転送される信号をモニタし、モニタされた
信号を基に警報状態を判定し、さらに判定された警報状
態を基に警報を発生することによってコンピュータシス
テムボードを管理する。本発明のこの具体例のひとつの
観点において、システムマネージャに供給される電力は
モニタされシステムを管理するために用いられる。他の
観点において、システムオペレーティング温度がシステ
ムを管理するために用いられ、さらに他の観点におい
て、ネットワーク管理情報がシステムを管理するために
用いられる。

いて、上記モニタされた情報は、上記システムマネージ
ャに供給される電圧又はシステムマネージャがオペレー
ティングする温度のレベルであってよい。
システムバスによってコンピュータシステム構成装置間
を転送される信号を受動的にモニタする手段と、上記モ
ニタされた信号に関連する目的物(objects)を記憶し
かつシステム内のオペレーティング状態に関連する情報
を提供するための目的空間(objects space)を備える
コンピュータシステムのシステムマネージャである。こ
の具体例のひとつの観点においては、システムバスによ
って転送されて受動的にモニタされる特別信号に基づい
て上記目的空間を更新する手段をも備えられている。
参照することによって、当業者にとってその特徴及び機
能が明らかになるであろう。
成されるシステムマネージャ22を有する拡張産業標準
構成(以下にEISAと記す。)に基づいたコンピュー
タネットワーク10を、詳細に説明する。LAN、WA
N又はその他のネットワーク構成のうちいずれか1つと
して構成されるコンピュータネットワーク10は、EI
SAサーバ12を包含する。このEISAサーバ12
は、例えば、テキサス州ヒューストンのコンパックコン
ピュータ社製造のシステムプロ モテル486−840
でありEISAに基づいたシステムバスによって相互接
続される一連のコンピュータサブシステム(不図示)か
らなるEISAに基づいたコンピュータシステムボード
を有する。コンピュータサブシステム自体はここでは特
に図示しないので、EISAコンピュータシステムボー
ドとEISAシステムバスは、簡単にするために単一要
素13として示される。
上に取り付けられるものは、システムマネージャ22を
含む多数のカードであり、システムマネージャ22は、
下記に詳述するように、32ビットのインテリジェント
バスマスタボード及びサポーティングファームウエア、
EISAネットワークインタフェースアダプタ24及び
インテリジェントディスクアレイコントローラデバイス
26を備える。EISAサーバ12のオペレーティング
システム(以下にOSと記す。)部分は、好ましくはネ
ットワークマネージメントエージェント15を含み、ネ
ットワークオペレーティングシステム14を含むもので
ある。多数のネットワークオペレーティングシステム、
例えば、上述したネットウエア又はLANマネージャネ
ットワークオペレーティングシステム、のどれもがネッ
トワークオペレーティングシステム14に用いることが
好適であることが予想される。
ペレーティングシステム14とは、システムマネージャ
デバイスドライバ16でインターフェイスされる。この
システムマネージャデバイスドライバ16は、システム
マネージャ22への及びシステムマネージャ22からの
全ての要求(リクエスト)に対する双方向トランスレー
タとして作用し、それによって、システムマネージャ2
2とネットワークマネージメントエージェント15との
双方向通信を与える。システムマネージャ22とネット
ワークマネージメントエージェント15との間の上記相
互接続を通じて、ネットワークマネージメントエージェ
ント15は、システムマネージャ22によって収集され
た情報を供給したり、受け取ったりすることができる。
従って、システムマネージャ22による目的物のマネー
ジメントは、もしネットワークマネージメントエージェ
ント15がシステムマネージャ22に記憶された目的物
を創造、抹消、変更、リセット又はクリアするための命
令を発すれば、ネットワークマネージメントエージェン
ト15によって開始される。

中警報は、システムマネージャデバイスドライバ16に
よってネットワークオペレーティングシステム14に伝

15の制御の下で、連携中ネットワークバス42によっ
てネットワークオペレーティングシステム14に接続さ
れたローカルネットワークマネージャコンソール36へ
連携中警報を指示する。他方、連携外警報が、ネットワ
ークオペレーティングシステム14で発生したら、連携
外警報は、例えば電話接続のような非同期リンク40を
経由してシステムマネージャ22に接続された遠隔に位
置するシステムマネージャファシリティ34へ伝送する
ために、システムマネージャ22へシステムマネージャ
デバイスドライバ16によって伝送されるであろう。シ
ステムマネージャ22とシステムマネージャコンソール
との間の双方向通信は、システムマネージャファシリテ
ィデバイスドライバ38によって与えられる。また、シ
ステムマネージャ22とネットワークオペレーティング
システム14との間にシステムマネージャデバイスドラ
イバ16によって伝送される付加信号があるが、この信
号について以下に詳述する。

ード/バス13上に取り付けられた他のカードとコンピ
ュータネットワーク自体との間のリンクとして作用する
ことによって、EISAサーバ12のためのネットワー
クマネージメント情報の中央集中点としてオペレートす
る。例えば、図1に示される本発明の実施例において、
EISAネットワークインタフェースアダプタ24、例
えば、アンテム エレクトロニクス社製のモデル NE
3200 32ビット イーサネットアダプタと、イン
テリジェントディスクアレイコントローラデバイス26
とは、共にEISAシステムボード/バス13に取り付
けられる。ネットワークオペレーティングシステム14
は、ある意味においてシステムマネージャデバイスドラ
イバ16と同様にオペレートするネットワークインター
フェースデバイスドライバ18を経由して、EISAシ
ステムボード/バス13とEISAネットワークインタ
フェースアダプタ24とを接続し、それらの間で双方向
にデータ伝送される。更に、EISAネットワークイン
タフェースアダプタ24は、ネットワーク28に双方向
にデータを伝送するように接続されるので、システムマ
ネージャ22とネットワーク28との間に双方向通信リ
ンクが構成される。ネットワーク28は、ネットワーク
媒体を経由するネットワーク構成装置のインタフェース
である。明細書中に説明及び図示されている本発明の実
施例において、単一のコンピュータステーション30を
示したが、ネットワーク28は、ネットワーク28に対
する多数のコンピュータステーションのアクセスを制御
するために、トークンリング、イーサネット又は他の今
日用いられているネットワーク位相数学で形成しても良
い。

26は、EISAシステムボード/バス13のためにデ
ィスク記憶装置を提供する。例えば、インテリジェント
ディスクアレイ(以下にIDAと記す)コントローラデ
バイス26は、4つの210メガバイトのコンパックI
DAドライブを組合せることによって、EISAシステ
ムボード/バス13のために840メガバイトのディス
ク記憶装置を提供することが出来る。
22の内部及び外部におけるデータと警報の形成におい
て最も共通する情報の流れを詳細に説明する。システム
マネージャ22は、種々のシステムコンポーネント(構
成装置)及びパラメータをモニタする能力を有する。も
し、コンポーネントが故障するか、又は故障するかもし
れないという徴候を示すならば、システムマネージャ2
2は故障又は潜在的な故障の徴候を発見し、ある意味で
訂正操作がされるべき警報として、故障又は潜在的な故
障の表示をレポートとして出力する。
ネント及び実際の又は潜在的な故障を表示するパラメー
タのモニタの間、データを蓄積(accumulated) する経路
は、モニタされる実際の又は潜在的故障の個々のタイプ
によって、4つの経路の内のどれか1つになる。モニタ
されるそれぞれのシステムコンポーネントは、多くの属
性を有する目的物として参照される。前記コンポーネン
トは、引き続きモニタされるので、目的物の属性の値
は、例えば、インクリメント、デクリメント、更新、リ
セット又は変更によって、変わってもよい。上記属性が
それらの境界すなわち閾値を超えたとき、警報が発生さ
せられる。警報に加えて、目的物の属性は、通常のシス
テム稼働に干渉を与えることなく、EISAシステムボ
ード/バス13の連続実時間モニタに利用することが出
来る。

I/Oと記す。)信号を含む。本発明の実施例におい
て、バスモニタ44はI/O信号をモニタすることが期
待されるけれども、本発明の更なる実施例においては、
バスモニタ44は、IRQ、DRQ及びI/O信号をモ
ニタすることが期待される。もし、信号が生ずれば、応
答システム資源が使用される。この意味では、これらの
信号は、EISAシステムボード/バス13の性能をモ
ニタすることに使用されてよい。EISAシステムボー
ド/バス13に与えられる他の信号は、警報条件を表示
するために目的物マネージメントの間に利用される。例
えば、回復(refresh)の欠如がEISAサーバ12の故
障の原因となるので、回復信号の欠如がEISAサーバ
12に警報を発生させる。同様に、メモリパリティエラ
ーの表示は警報を発生させる。
ステムマネージャ22がプリンタエラーすなわち紙不足
をレポートするためのプリンタポートと、システムマネ
ージャがオーバーランエラー、パリティエラー及びシス
テムボード直列ポートのためのフレーミングエラーのよ
うな非同期動作をモニタ及び記録するための非同期直列
ポートと、ソフトウエアエラーを識別するためのシステ
ムソフトウエアと、キーストロークが記録され、システ
ム故障とキーボード入力との間の関係を解析するための
キーボード事象とについて行われる。最後に、バスモニ
タ44は破局ボード故障を示すIOCHKのアサーショ
ン、及びEISA標準の妨害を表示するボード中断表示
を検出する。バスモニタ44は、モニタ情報が処理され
る情報処理及び警報判定要素52へ前記信号を伝達す
る。更に詳述すると、システムマネージャ22の情報処
理及び警報判定要素52は、目的管理技術の応用によっ
て、モニタ情報が警報の発生を保証するかどうか決定す
るように構成された制御プロセッサ及び支援ロジックを
備えるものである。
潜在的発生のために警報判定要素52に配送される他の
信号のモニタを提供する。これらの他の信号は、上述の
ものとは異なる経路によって警報判定要素52へ与えら
れる。システムマネージャ22へ電力を供給するため
に、EISAシステムボード/バス13は、電源温度モ
ニタ/電源要素50に±5V及び±12Vを与える。シ
ステムマネージャ22へ供給される電圧レベルは、電源
温度モニタ/電源要素50に含まれるアナログデジタル
変換器によってデジタル信号に変換される。そしてこの
デジタルパワーレベルは、警報判定要素52へ伝達され
る。例えば、もしシステムパワーの低下が検知されたな
らば、警報判定要素52は、警報を発生する。しかしな
がら、もしパワーの完全な損失を生じたならば、システ
ムマネージャ22は、バッテリパワーへ切り換えるであ
ろう。そして、非同期モデム及び直列接続の一方又は両
方を通じて、事象が再び警報としてレポートされる。シ
ステムマネージャ22のこの様子は同時継続出願名称
「コンピュータ システム マネージャのための電源」
により詳しく説明されており、これを参照することによ
り、より明らかになる。しかしながら、要するに、シス
テムパワーのロスの後、システムマネージャは警報を伝
達するためにリザーブパワーに切り換え、警報を伝達し
た後、パワー保持のための非常用モードへ切り換える。

電源を切断する。

温度モニタ部分によってモニタされ、警報判定要素52
に供給された情報は、バスマスタインターフェイス46
によって警報判定要素52に供給された情報と同様に、
いくつかの目的のために用いられてよい。初めに、警報
判定要素52は、情報を処理することが出来、もし適当
ならば警報を発生する。警報判定要素52によって判定

ことよって、またはペイジャー56に関連する電話番号
に電話をかけることによって、又は人が電話58に電話
をかけて合成音声メッセージを発生させることによっ
て、連携外警報を送信してもよい。

t)リブートは、システムマネージャ22のリブートを
作動させるために、制御キー、代替キー、及びデリート
キーを同時にインサートすることによってエミュレート
される。完全なハード(hard)リボートを作動させること

はシステムコンポーネントからパワーを選択的に移すこ
とによってハードリブートをシミュレーションすること

プロセッサが音声警報を伝送することを望めば、制御プ
ロセッサ68は、所望のメッセージをモデム84に供給
するように音声合成ロジック82に命令するが、このモ
デムは、例えば1秒当たり2400ビットのモデムであ
ってよく、電話器56との双方向インターフェイスで所
望のメッセージを伝送し得るものである。警報が伝送さ
れた後は、モデム84はサーバ情報を通過させこれを制
御するリターンコールを待つ。

られる。例えば、警報配送がモデム84を経由してペイ
ジャー56又は電話器に送られたとき、警報を受信した

特別(additional)情報とを結び付けることを望むであ
ろう。例えば、もしユーザがモデム84にパスワード伝
送したとき、押しボタンダイアル方式デコーダ88は音
質をデコードし、このデコードされた音質を制御プロセ
ッサ68へ伝送する。そして、制御プロセッサ68はパ
スワードが適当なものであるかを決定する。さらに、押
しボタンダイアル方式デコーダ88は遠隔コンソール競

マネージャファームウェア104により実行される多く
のタスクと、システムファームウェア104とモデム及
びUART94の両方との間のファームウェアインター
フェイスを提供する非同期マネージャ122との間の通

マネージャに供給された電圧レベルをモニタし、このモ
ニタされた電圧レベルを上記プロセッサに転送する電圧
レベルモニタ手段を備えており、 上記プロセッサが、上記モニタされた情報と上記モニタ
された電圧レベルとに基づいて上記警報状態を判定する
請求項9のシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項12】上記電圧レベルモニタ手段が、 上記システムバスに接続された入力と出力とを有してお
り、上記システムバスによって上記システムマネージャ
に供給される電圧レベルをアナログで測定し、この測定
された電圧レベルを出力するパワーモニタ手段と、 上記パワーモニタ手段の出力に結合された入力と上記プ
ロセッサに結合された出力とを有しており、上記測定さ
れたアナログの電圧レベルをデジタルの電圧レベルに変
換し、上記デジタルの電圧レベルを上記プロセッサに出
力するアナログデジタル変換器とを備えている請求項1
1のシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項13】上記システムマネージャのオペレーティ
ング温度をモニタし、このモニタされた温度レベルを上
記プロセッサに転送する温度レベルモニタ手段を備えて
おり、 上記プロセッサが、上記モニタされた情報と上記モニタ
された温度レベルとに基づいて上記警報状態を判定する
請求項9のシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項14】上記温度レベルモニタ手段が、 上記システムマネージャに取付られておりかつ出力を有
しており、上記システムマネージャのオペレーティング
温度をアナログで測定し、この測定されたアナログの温
度レベルを出力する温度モニタと、 上記温度モニタの出力に結合された入力と上記プロセッ
サに結合された出力とを有しており、上記測定されたア
ナログの温度レベルをデジタルの温度レベルに変換し、
上記デジタルの温度レベルを上記プロセッサに出力する
アナログデジタル変換器とを備えている請求項13のシ
ステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項15】上記コンソールが遠隔配置されており、 上記転送手段が、上記警報を上記遠隔配置されたコンソ
ールに非同期的に転送するための非同期転送インターフ
ェイス手段を備えている請求項9のシステムマネージ
ャ。 - 【請求項16】上記コンピュータネットワークが、ネッ
トワークマネージャと上記コンピュータネットワークを
経由して上記ネットワークマネージャにアクセス可能な
ローカルコンソールとを備えており、 上記システムマネージャが、上記プロセッサから上記ネ
ットワークマネージャへ上記警報を転送するために、上
記ネットワークマネージャとインターフェイスするイン
ターフェイス手段を備えており、 上記プロセッサで発生した上記警報は、上記非同期転送
インターフェイス手段を経由して上記遠隔コンソールに
又は上記ネットワークマネージャを経由して上記ローカ
ルコンソールに選択的に配送されることのできる請求項
15のシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項17】上記システムマネージャが電話器を備え
ており、 上記転送手段が上記プロセッサに結合されたモデムを備
えており、 上記プロセッサで発生した上記警報は、上記非同期転送
インターフェイス手段を経由して上記遠隔コンソールに
又は上記モデムを経由して上記電話器に選択的に配送さ
れることのできる請求項15のシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項18】上記システムマネージャがペイジャーを
備えており、 上記転送手段が上記プロセッサに結合されたモデムを備
えており、 上記プロセッサで発生した上記警報は、上記非同期転送
インターフェイス手段を経由して上記遠隔コンソールに
又は上記モデムを経由して上記ペイジャーに選択的に配
送されることのできる請求項15のシステムマネージ
ャ。 - 【請求項19】複数のシステム構成装置と上記システム
構成装置間に情報を転送するシステムバスとを有するコ
ンピュータシステムのシステムマネージャにおいて、 上記システムバスによって転送される信号を受動的にモ
ニタする手段と、 上記受動的にモニタされた信号に関連する目的物を記憶
し、かつ、上記コンピュータシステムのオペレーティン
グ状態に関連する情報を提供するための目的空間とを備
えているシステムマネージャ。 - 【請求項20】上記システムバスによって転送されて受
動的にモニタされた特別信号に基づいて上記目的空間を
更新する手段を備えており、 この更新された目的空間が、上記コンピュータシステム
のオペレーティング状態に関連する情報を提供する請求
