【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、データ処理システム、
より詳細に言えば、データ処理システムにソフトウエア
をインストールすること、即ちソフトウエアを設定する
ことに関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】与えられたデータ処理装置は多くの方法
で構成することができる。コンピユータ・システムの或
る種のコンフイギユレーシヨン（構成）の選択は、ハー
ドウエアを変更すること（例えば、デイスク駆動装置の
数及び容量を変更する）によつて設定される。コンピユ
ータ・システムのコンフイギユレーシヨンの他のパラメ
ータは、コンピユータによつてストアされたコンフイギ
ユレーシヨン・フアイル中にセツトされている。データ
処理装置の中にストアされたそのようなコンフイギユレ
ーシヨン・フアイルの例は、例えばオペレーテイング・
システム２の下で動作するＩＢＭパーソナル・システム
／２のようなパーソナル・コンピユータ内のＣＯＮＦＩ
Ｇ．ＳＹＳのフアイルである（ＩＢＭ、パーソナルシス
テム／２、オペレーテイングシステム／２はインターナ
シヨナル・ビジネス・マシーンズ・コーポレーシヨンの
登録商標である）。このようなコンフイギユレーシヨン
・フアイルによつて設定されているパラメータの例は、
そのコンピユータによつてデイスプレーされる特定の国
の文字セツトを表示する「カウントリー（国）」ステー
トメントとか、または、どのようなデバイス駆動コード
がそのコンピユータに接続される周辺装置に使われてい
るかを表示する「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」ステートメントである
。
【０００３】コンピユータそれ自身に関連したコンフイ
ギユレーシヨン・パラメータと同じように、コンフイギ
ユレーシヨン・フアイルもまた、コンピユータ内に設定
されるソフトウエアによつて決定されるパラメータを含
んでいる。そのようなパラメータの例は、オペレーテイ
ング・システムのコマンド・ラインから要求されたフア
イルに対して、コンピユータがサーチすべきフアイル・
デイレクトリ（フアイルの登録簿）を表示する「ＰＡＴ
Ｈ」ステートメントである。また、ソフトウエアの特定
の一部は、コンピユータを効率的に動作させるために、
特定のバツフア・サイズを要求するけれども、これは「
ＢＵＦＦＥＲ」ステートメントによつて設定することが
できる。
【０００４】コンピユータのコンフイギユレーシヨンの
すべての組合せとか、これらのコンフイギユレーシヨン
の組合せをどのようにして変更するのかについての細部

ら知られている。このことは、ユーザが設置しようとし
ているプログラムがストアされているデイスケツトを、
初歩的なユーザが、単にデイスケツト駆動装置にそのよ
うなデイスケツトを挿入し、「ＩＮＳＴＡＬＬ（設置）
」のような単一のプログラム・コマンドを打鍵するだけ
でよいことを意味している。ユーザのこの操作は、デイ
スケツトからのプログラムをコンピユータのストレージ
中にコピーし、そして、コンフイギユレーシヨン・フア
イルに必要なすべての変更を行なうプログラムの実行を
開始させる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】コンピユータ・プログ
ラムの設置を更に単純化するように、データ処理ネツト
ワーク全体にわたつてソフトウエアを配分するデータ処
理装置が作られることが望まれている。ワークステイシ
ヨンのユーザがデイスケツトを操作したり、またはソフ
トウエアの設置操作に関与することなく、新しいソフト
ウエア・フアイル、またはワークステイシヨンによつて
既に保持されているソフトウエア・フアイルに対して更
新されたソフトウエア・フアイルが、通信ラインを介し
てワークステイシヨンに転送することが望まれている。
【０００６】使用が簡単で容易なデータ処理装置を得る
のがデータ処理の分野で常に求められている。
【０００７】
【課題を解決するための手段】データ処理ネツトワーク
内にソフトウエア・フアイルを設置する本発明の方法は
、中央のコンピユータから、通信システムを介してワー
クステイシヨンにソフトウエア・フアイルを転送するス
テツプと、上記転送されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関
連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを読み取る
ステツプと、上記ワークステイシヨンに既に設置されて
いるソフトウエア・フアイルを検出するステツプと、上
記検出されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコンフ
イギユレーシヨン作成フアイルの１つ、またはそれ以上
のフアイルを読み取るステツプと、完全に１つに合成さ
れたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを作るために
、上記転送されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコ
ンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルと、上記検出された
ソフトウエア・フアイルに関連した上記１つ、またはそ
れ以上のフアイルとを組合せるステツプと、上記合成さ
れたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを用いて、上
記ワークステイシヨンを再構成するステツプとで構成さ
れる。
【０００８】本発明は、データ処理ネツトワークにソフ
トウエアを設置する方法である。すなわち、データ処理
ネツトワークに設置されるソフトウエアの新しい部分は
、この新しい部分が設置されるワークステイシヨンのコ
ンフイギユレーシヨン（構成）の変更を要求する。設置
される新しいソフトウエアの使用に関連するコンフイギ
ユレーシヨンフアイルは新しいソフトウエアが設置され
るワークステイシヨンのコンフイギユレーシヨン（構成
）の変更を特定する。このコンフイギユレーシヨン作成
フアイルは、合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フ
アイルを作るために、既にワークステイシヨンに設定さ
れているソフトウエアフアイルに関連したコンフイギユ
レーシヨン作成フアイルと結合される。そして、この合
成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルをワーク
ステイシヨンの再構成に用いる。
【０００９】データ処理ネツトワーク内にソフトウエア
・フアイルを設置するプログラムを使用する時に、設置
されているソフトウエア・フアイルと適応させるために
、ワークステイシヨンのコンフイギユレーシヨン（構成
）の変更を調整することが必要である。ワークステイシ
ヨンを再構成するために用いられる合成されたコンフイ
ギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを作ることは、必要に応じ
てコンフイギユレーシヨン・フアイルの作成において新
しい機能を与えるために、更にその上の処理ステツプを
実行させる機会を与える利点を持つている。
【００１０】設置された各ソフトウエア・フアイルは、
ワークステイシヨンの構成に対する修正を必ずしも必要
としないことと、検出されたソフトウエア・フアイルに
関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルは、既に
設置されているソフトウエアの項目のための別個のフア
イルとしてか、または単一のフアイルとしてストアする
ことができることとには、注意を払う必要がある。また
、設置されているソフトウエア・フアイルは必ずしもプ
ログラム・フアイルである必要がないことと、設置され
るデータ・フアイルはワークステイシヨンの構成に変更
を必要とすることにも注意を払う必要がある。読み取り
、検出及び組み合わせを遂行する処理は、ソフトウエア
・フアイルを与えるワークステイシヨン、またはコンピ
ユータのいずれかで行なわれる。コンフイギユレーシヨ
ン作成フアイルは、ワークステイシヨンの構成を変更す
るために直接に適用可能なインストラクシヨンを含んで
いるが、コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルはワーク
ステイシヨンに適用されるコマンドを作る更なる処理の
ためのインストラクシヨンを含んでいることが望ましい
（これは、柔軟性を著しく増加させる）。
【００１１】本発明の実施例において、ソフトウエア・
フアイルによつて要求された構成の変更は、優先度の程
度を示す値に関連され、そして、組合せの上記ステツプ
は、衝突を生じた構成の変更の間の優先度の値を比較す
るステツプと、上記合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン
作成フアイル中の最も高い優先度を持つ構成を変更する
ステツプを含んでいる。この実施例の特徴は、異なつた
ソフトウエア・フアイルの要求の間の衝突について、順
序付けて解決していくことにある。このような衝突の例
は、オペレーテイング・システム／２プログラム中のＩ
ＯＰＬプログラムの中にＩＯＰＬパラメータの（ＹＥＳ
、ＮＯ）の設定の間で生じる。ＩＯＰＬパラメータは、
ワークステイシヨンの中で動作するアプリケーシヨンの
入／出力の特権を特定する。この状態の１つの例を挙げ
ると、ＩＯＰＬ＝ＮＯに設定することによつて、１方の
プログラムは、ワークステイシヨンのオペレーテイング
・システム中の入出力機能の最も深い層にアクセスする
必要がないのに反して、他方のプログラムは、ＩＯＰＬ
＝ＹＥＳに設定されているために、この入／出力アクセ
スに強く従属されている場合である。各コンフイギユレ
ーシヨン作成フアイルに関連された優先度の数値は、こ
の衝突の問題を最も効果的に解決することができ、最も
正確な設定を選択することができる。すべてのコンフイ
ギユレーシヨンの変更が衝突を起こすというものではな
く、例えば、「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」コマンドを用いたデバイ
ス・ドライバの設定は、衝突を生じることがないから、
従つて「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」コマンドには、関連した優先度
の数値を持たせる必要はない。
【００１２】本発明の実施例の他の特徴は、上記のコン
フイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル中の構成の変更を特定
する変数の値を決定するステツプにある。この特徴は、
変数によつて構成を特定させることにあり、この変数の
値は、構成の変更が行なわれる直前に決定される。この
１つの例は、デバイス・ドライバのコードが保持されて
いるデイスクを特定する「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」コマンドであ
る。デバイス・ドライバのコードは、任意のデイスクに
ストアすることができる（例えば、ワークステイシヨン
について熟練したユーザはフアイルを任意に移動するこ
とができるから、フアイルは、設置ソフトウエアがそれ
らのフアイルを最初にストアした位置にはない場合があ

タ処理ネツトワークは、中央のコンピユータから、通信
システムを介してワークステイシヨンにソフトウエア・
フアイルを転送するロジツクと、上記転送されたソフト
ウエア・フアイルに関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作
成フアイルを読み取るロジツクと、上記ワークステイシ
ヨンに既に設置されているソフトウエア・フアイルを検
出するロジツクと、上記検出されたソフトウエア・フア
イルに関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルの
１つ、またはそれ以上のフアイルを読み取るロジツクと
、完全に１つに合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成
フアイルを作るために、上記転送されたソフトウエア・
フアイルに関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイ
ルと、上記検出されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連し
た上記１つ、またはそれ以上のフアイルとを組合せるロ
ジツクと、上記合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成
フアイルを用いて、上記ワークステイシヨンを再構成す
るロジツクとを含んでいる。

【実施例】図１はホスト・コンピユータ４と複数個のワ
ークステイシヨン６、８とを含むデータ処理ネツトワー
ク２を示している。通信システム１０、１２はワークス
テイシヨンをホスト・コンピユータに接続している。ホ
スト・コンピユータは、プログラム・ストレージ領域に
ストアされたコンピユータ・プログラムの制御の下で動
作する中央処理装置１４を含んでいる。ソフトウエア・
フアイルのストレージ領域１８はソフトウエア・フアイ
ルＳ１、Ｓ２、Ｓ３のコピーを含んでいる。各ソフトウ
エア・フアイルはコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル
Ｃ１、Ｃ２、Ｃ３と関連されている。ソフトウエア・フ
アイル・ストレージ領域１８、プログラム・ストレージ
領域１６、中央処理装置１４及び通信システム１０、１
２はバス２０によつて結合されている。プログラム・ス
トレージ領域中にストアされているプログラムのインス
トラクシヨンの制御の下で動作する中央処理装置１４は
ソフトウエアの設置を駆動する。
【００１６】図２は組合せられる複数のソフトウエア・
コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを示しており、こ
れらはワークステイシヨンの構成を変更するのに用いら
れる。ソフトウエア１と関連されたコンフイギユレーシ
ヨン作成フアイル２２は、ワークステイシヨン６、８に
設置されているソフトウエアの新しい部分のコンフイギ
ユレーシヨン作成フアイルである。ソフトウエア２及び
ソフトウエア３に夫々関連されたコンフイギユレーシヨ
ン作成フアイル２４及び２６は、ワークステイシヨンに
既に設置されているソフトウエアの項目のコンフイギユ
レーシヨン作成フアイルである。コンポジツトコンフイ
ギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２８は、本発明の実施例に
基いてコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２２、２４
及び２６を組合せた結果である。
【００１７】組合せられるべき各コンフイギユレーシヨ
ン作成フアイル２２、２４及び２６はＩＯＰＬステート
メントを含んでいる。パラメータ、ＩＯＰＬステートメ
ントはただ１つしか設定できないから、コンフイギユレ
ーシヨン作成フアイルの中に１つ以上のＩＯＰＬステー
トメントを持つことはできない。コンフイギユレーシヨ

較する。「ＹＥＳ」の設定は１００の優先度を持つてい
るのに反して、「ＮＯ」の設定は５０及び４０の優先度
しか持つていない。最も高い優先度を持つ設定が適用さ
れ、その結果、ステートメントＩＯＰＬ＝ＹＥＳがコン
ポジツト作成フアイル２８の中に書き込まれる。
【００１８】夫々のコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイ
ル２２、２４は「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」ステートメントを含ん
でいる。複数個のデバイス・ドライバを設置することは
通常行なわれることだから、１つ以上の「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ
」ステートメントを特定し、合成されたコンフイギユレ
ーシヨン作成フアイルを持つことには問題は無い。コン
フイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２４と２６中の「ＤＥ
ＶＩＣＥ」ステートメントは、ロケーシヨン、フアイル
名及び設置されるデバイス・ドライバのコードのデイレ
クトリを完全に特定する。コンフイギユレーシヨン作成
フアイル２２中の「ＤＥＶＩＣＥ」ステートメントは、
フアイル名、設置されるデバイス・ドライバのコードの
デイレクトリを特定するけれども、しかし、コンフイギ
ユレーシヨン作成フアイル２２、２４及び２６を組合せ
る処理の間で決定される変数として見出されるデバイス
・ドライバのコードをドライブとして残す。ステートメ
ント＜ＤＲＩＶＥ＞に出会うと、システムは、ワークス
テイシヨンを通して検索して、そのドライバ・コードが
常駐するドライブを見い出す。これによつて、ロケーシ

生じない。ソフトウエア２は最大２０のバツフア・スト
レージを必要とするけれども、ソフトウエア１の新しい
ソフトウエアのフアイルは最大６０のバツフア・ストレ
ージを必要とする。従つて、若しバツフア・ストレージ
が６０にセツトされたならば、ソフトウエア・フアイル
は、それらを適正に動作するのに必要とする充分な大き
さのバツフア・ストレージを持つている。システムは「
ＢＵＦＦＥＲ」ステートメントの最大値を検索し、そし
て、合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２
８の中にこれを含ませる。この例の場合、この値は、合
成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２８中で
特定される適当な値であるパラメータの最大値であるが
、他の環境においては、これは、合成されたコンフイギ

ないパラメータの最小値であるかもしれない。

、２４及び２６のすべては、「ＰＡＴＨ」ステートメン

２８中の適当な構文（ｓｙｎｔａｘ）を持つ単一の「Ｐ
ＡＴＨ」ステートメント内にこれらのステートメントを

アイル２８が構成されると、ワークステイシヨン６、８
を再構成するのに用いられる最終結果を作るために、ユ
ーザが定義付け可能なコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フア
イルと、ベース・コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル
とを組合せることができる。ベース・コンフイギユレー
シヨン作成フアイルは、関係するワークステイシヨン６
、８の変更不可能なコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイ
ルによつて決定されるステートメントを含んでいるのに
反して、ユーザが定義可能なコンフイギユレーシヨン作
成フアイルは、ワークステイシヨンのユーザだけで決め
た任意のステートメントを含んでおり、このステートメ
ントは個々のユーザが望む値に設定することができる。
【００２１】図３は本発明の実施例の動作を説明するた
めの流れ図である。ステツプ３０、３２、３４及び３６
において、新しいソフトウエアのフアイルがワークステ
イシヨンに転送され、新しいソフトウエアのフアイルに
関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルが読み取
られ、ワークステイシヨンに既に設置されているソフト
ウエアのフアイルが認識され、そして、設置されたソフ
トウエアのフアイルのための対応するコンフイギユレー
シヨン作成フアイルが読み取られる。上述のステツプを
遂行すると、システムは図２の上部に対応する情報を持
つている。

ルを検索する。若し、問題を生じるステートメントが検
出されたならば、ステートメントに関連された優先度の
値が比較され、そして、低い優先度を持つステートメン
トは無視される。このようにして、上述したＩＯＰＬの
ようなステートメントを操作することができる。
【００２３】ステツプ４４及び４６において、システム
は、合同することが可能なコンフイギユレーシヨン作成
フアイルのステートメントを検索する。若し、そのよう
なステートメントが見い出されたならば、それらのステ
ートメントは、適当な構文を用いて単一のコマンドを形
成するように合体される。このようにして、「ＰＡＴＨ
」ステートメントのようなステートメントを操作するこ
とができる。
【００２４】ステツプ４８及び５０において、システム
は単一のパラメータをセツトするステートメントの複数
の存在を検索する。若し、そのようなステートメントが
見い出されたならば、特定されたパラメータの適当な最
大値が、ステートメントの中から決定され、そして、こ
の値が、複合した作成フアイル２８中にセツトされる値
である。このようにして、「ＢＵＦＦＥＲ」のような、
複数のステートメントの発生を処理することができる。
【００２５】ステツプ５２及び５４において、システム
は、変数を含むコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルの
ステートメントがあるか否かをチエツクする。若し、そ
のようなステートメントがあれば、システムはその変数
に適当な値を決定し、そして、複合した作成フアイル２
８に加えられるステートメント中にその適当な変数を、
その適当な値で置き換える。このようにして、＜ＤＲＩ
ＶＥ＞のようなコマンドを処理することができる。
【００２６】ステツプ５６において、複合したコンフイ
ギユレーシヨン作成フアイル２８は、既に説明したよう
に、ベース・コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルと、
ユーザのコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルとを組み
合わせられる。ステツプ５８において、ワークステイシ
ヨン６、８の中のＣＯＦＩＧ．ＳＹＳフアイルは、前の
ステツプで決定されたＣＯＮＦＩＧ．ＳＹＳフアイルに
よつて置き換えられる。次に、この処理は終了する。
【００２７】上述した実施例は、プログラムされた汎用
コンピユータを用いた実施例で説明したけれども、本発
明は、特殊目的のハードウエアにも適用することが出来
るのは（適用には若干の困難と、費用とを伴うが）当業
者であれば容易に理解できるであろう。また、任意のコ
ンピユータ言語によつて、本発明を適用した汎用コンピ
ユータを制御するために必要なソフトウエアを作成する
ことも当業者であれば容易に行なうことができる。

【発明の効果】ワークステイシヨンのユーザがデイスケ
ツトを操作したり、またはソフトウエアの設置操作に関
与することなく、新しいソフトウエア・フアイル、また
はワークステイシヨンによつて既に保持されているソフ
トウエア・フアイルに対して更新されたソフトウエア・
フアイルが通信ラインを介してワークステイシヨンに転
送することを可能とする。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】　　データ処理ネツトワーク内にソフトウ
    エア・フアイルを設置する方法において、中央のコンピ
    ユータから、通信システムを介してワークステイシヨン
    にソフトウエア・フアイルを転送するステツプと、上記
    転送されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコンフイ
    ギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを読み取るステツプと、上
    記ワークステイシヨンに既に設置されているソフトウエ
    ア・フアイルを検出するステツプと、上記検出されたソ
    フトウエア・フアイルに関連したコンフイギユレーシヨ
    ン作成フアイルの１つ、またはそれ以上のフアイルを読
    み取るステツプと、１つの完全な合成されたコンフイギ
    ユレーシヨン作成フアイルを作るために、上記転送され
    たソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコンフイギユレー
    シヨン作成フアイルと、上記検出されたソフトウエア・
    フアイルに関連した上記１つ、またはそれ以上のフアイ
    ルとを組み合せるステツプと、上記合成されたコンフイ
    ギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを用いて、上記ワークステ
    イシヨンを再構成するステツプとを含むデータ処理ネツ
    トワーク内にソフトウエア・フアイルを設置する方法。
  2. 【請求項２】　　ソフトウエア・フアイルによつて要求
    される構成の変更は優先度の値に関連されており、組合
    せる上記ステツプは衝突する構成変更の間の優先度の値
    を比較し、かつ上記合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン
    作成フアイル中の最も高い優先度の構成変更を含むこと
    を特徴とする請求項１に記載のデータ処理ネツトワーク
    内にソフトウエア・フアイルを設置する方法。
  3. 【請求項３】　　上記コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フア
    イル中の構成変更を特定する変数値を決定するステツプ
    を含むことを特徴とする請求項１、または２に記載のデ
    ータ処理ネツトワーク内にソフトウエア・フアイルを設
    置する方法。
  4. 【請求項４】　　組合せの上記ステツプは、上記合成さ
    れたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル中に組合せら
    れた構成変更ステートメントを作成するために、適合な
    構成ステートメントを合成することを特徴とする請求項
    １、２または３に記載のデータ処理ネツトワーク内にソ
    フトウエア・フアイルを設置する方法。
  5. 【請求項５】　　中央のコンピユータから、通信システ
    ムを介してワークステーシヨンにソフトウエア・フアイ
    ルを転送する手段と、上記転送されたソフトウエア・フ
    アイルに関連したコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイル
    を読み取る手段と、上記ワークステイシヨンに既に設置
    されているソフトウエア・フアイルを検出する手段と、
    上記検出されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコン
    フイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルの１つ、またはそれ以
    上のフアイルを読み取る手段と、１つの完全な合成され
    たコンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを作るために、
    上記転送されたソフトウエア・フアイルに関連したコン
    フイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルと、上記検出されたソ
    フトウエア・フアイルに関連した上記１つ、またはそれ
    以上のフアイルとを組み合せる手段と、上記合成された
    コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フアイルを用いて、上記ワ
    ークステイシヨンを再構成する手段とを有するデータ処
    理ネツトワーク。
  6. 【請求項６】　　ソフトウエア・フアイルによつて要求
    される構成の変更は優先度の値に関連されており、上記
    組合せる手段は衝突する構成変更の間の優先度の値を比
    較し、かつ上記合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨン作成
    フアイル中の最も高い優先度の構成変更を行なうことを
    特徴とする請求項５に記載のデータ処理ネツトワーク。
  7. 【請求項７】　　上記コンフイギユレーシヨン作成フア
    イル中の構成変更を特定する変数値を決定する手段を有
    することを特徴とする請求項５、または６に記載のデー
    タ処理ネツトワーク。
  8. 【請求項８】　　上記合成されたコンフイギユレーシヨ
    ン作成フアイル中に組合せられた構成変更ステートメン
    トを作成するために、適合な構成ステートメントを合成
    する手段を有することを特徴とする請求項５、６または
    ７に記載のデータ処理ネツトワーク。
