Description
実施形態に係わる印刷装置1の概略構成について説明する。なお、図面に付記する座標においては、Z軸に沿う両方向は上下方向であり矢印方向が「上」、X軸に沿う両方向は左右方向であり矢印方向が「左」、Y軸に沿う両方向は前後方向であり矢印方向が「前」としている。また、X軸に沿う両方向は主走査方向に対応し、Y軸は印刷部70における搬送方向に対応する。また、媒体Sの搬送方向に沿う位置関係を「上流」「下流」ともいう。
吸引部95は、ヘッド71に蓋をすると共に複数のノズル76からヘッド71内のインクを吸引する、排出動作の一例としての吸引動作を行う装置である。吸引部95は、X方向において、プラテン57のいずれか一方の外側に設けられている。吸引部95は、+Z方向からの平面視にてX方向に往復移動するヘッド71と重なる位置に配置される。吸引部95は、図示しない負圧ポンプを備え、ヘッド71を蓋した状態で負圧ポンプを駆動させることで、ヘッド71内のインクを吸引する。これにより、ヘッド71内に混入した気泡や異物等が取り除かれ、ノズル詰まりを生じたノズル76の吐出を回復することができる。なお、本実施形態では、排出動作として、ヘッド71を吸引することでインクを吸引する吸引動作を例示したが、ヘッド71に供給するインクを加圧することでノズル76から液体を強制的に排出する加圧動作であってもよい。また、吸引部95は、ヘッド71をクリーニングするクリーニング手段の一つである。クリーニング手段としては、吸引部95の他に、ノズルプレート77を払拭するワイパーや、ノズル76から強制的に排出させたインクを受容するフラッシングボックスなどを備えた構成であってもよい。
図4に示すように、ヘッド71は、複数の圧電素子172、固定板173、及び、フレキシブルケーブル174等をユニット化した圧電素子ユニット170と、この圧電素子ユニット170を収納可能なケース171と、ケース171の先端面に接合された流路ユニット180とを備えている。圧電素子172は、各ノズル76からインクを吐出させるアクチュエーターとして機能する。
なお、この圧電素子172はコンデンサーと同じように振る舞う。即ち、信号の供給が停止された場合において、圧電素子172の電位は、停止直前の電位で保持される。
I/F部11は、入力装置2と制御部10との間でデータの送受信を行うためのものであり、入力装置2から送信された画像データなどを受信する。
CPU12は、各種の入力信号処理や、入信した画像データから印刷を実行するための印刷データなどを生成する演算処理装置である。CPU12は、記憶部13に格納されているプログラム及び印刷データに基づいて印刷装置1全体の制御を行う。
記憶部13は、CPU12のプログラムを格納する領域や作業領域などを確保するための記憶媒体であり、RAM(Random Access Memory)、EEPROM(Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)などの記憶素子を有している。記憶部13には、画像データを扱う一般的な画像処理アプリケーションソフトウェアや、印刷装置1に印刷を実行させるための印刷データを生成するプリンタードライバーソフトウェアが格納される。
駆動信号生成部14aは、各ノズル76に対応する圧電素子172を駆動するための駆動制御信号を生成する回路である。生成された駆動制御信号を圧電素子172に印加することでノズル76からインクが吐出される。
吐出信号生成部14bは、印刷データおよびCPU12の演算結果に基づいて、インクを吐出させるノズル76の選択、インクを吐出させる吐出タイミングなどを制御するための吐出制御信号を生成する回路である。
移動信号生成部14cは、印刷データおよびCPU12の演算結果に基づいて、搬送部50、ヘッド移動部75を駆動するための移動制御信号を生成する回路である。
なお、本実施形態では、残留振動に基づいて異常ノズルを検出する異常ノズル検出部150を備えた構成の印刷装置1を例示したが、吐出不良を生じた異常ノズルの検出方法は、ノズル76から吐出されるインクを光学センサーで検出する方法や、媒体Sに吐出させたインクのドットをスキャナーで読み取って検出する方法であってもよい。
また、本実施形態では、ヘッド71として、往復移動するキャリッジ72に搭載され媒体Sの幅方向に移動しながらインクを吐出するシリアルヘッド方式の印刷装置1を例示したが、媒体Sの幅方向に延在し固定して配列されたラインヘッド方式の印刷装置であってもよい。
ヘッド71と媒体Sとの接触が検出された際に検出された異常ノズルは、ノズル76が媒体Sと擦れることによりノズル76の径よりも大きい気泡がノズル76内に混入することで吐出不良を起こした可能性が高い。大きな気泡が固化すると吐出不良を回復することが困難になるため、排出動作の一例としての吸引動作を直ちに実行して固化するまえに気泡を排出する必要がある。一方、ヘッド71と媒体Sと接触が検出されること無く検出された異常ノズルは、インクに混入しているノズル76の径よりも小さい気泡により吐出不良を起こした可能性が高い。小さい気泡は、固化した後でも吸引動作を実行することで吐出不良を回復することができる。そこで、制御部10は、異常ノズルが検出され、且つヘッド71と媒体Sとの接触が検出されなかった場合に、異常ノズルを補完する印刷を実行する。これにより、印刷動作を中断して行う吸引動作の実行回数が減少する。したがって、印刷効率を向上させる印刷装置1を提供することができる。
ヘッド71と媒体Sとの接触が検出された際に検出された異常ノズルは、ノズル76が媒体Sと擦れることによりノズル76の径よりも大きい気泡がノズル76内に混入することで吐出不良を起こした可能性が高い。大きな気泡が固化すると吐出不良を回復することが困難になるため、吸引動作を直ちに実行して固化するまえに気泡を排出する必要がある。一方、ヘッド71と媒体Sと接触が検出されること無く検出された異常ノズルは、インクに混入しているノズル76の径よりも小さい気泡により吐出不良を起こした可能性が高い。小さい気泡は、固化した後でも吸引動作を実行することで吐出不良を回復することができる。そこで、印刷装置1の印刷方法は、異常ノズルが検出され、且つヘッド71と媒体Sとの接触が検出されなかった場合に、異常ノズルを補完する印刷を実行する工程を有している。これにより、印刷動作を中断して行う吸引動作の実行回数が減少する。したがって、印刷装置1の印刷効率を向上させる印刷方法を提供するができる。
Claims (5)
- 媒体に液体を吐出する複数のノズルを有するヘッドと、
前記複数のノズルのうち吐出不良を生じた異常ノズルを検出する異常ノズル検出部と、
前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触を検出する接触検出部と、
前記複数のノズルから前記液体を排出する排出動作を行う排出部と、
制御部と、を備え、
前記制御部は、
前記異常ノズルが検出され、且つ前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触が検出された場合に、前記排出動作を実行し、
前記異常ノズルが検出され、且つ前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触が検出されなかった場合に、前記異常ノズルを補完する印刷を実行すること、
を特徴とする印刷装置。 - 前記制御部は、前記異常ノズルの数が閾値以上検出された場合に、前記排出動作を実行すること、
を特徴とする請求項1に記載の印刷装置。 - 前記ヘッドは、前記液体を吐出させるアクチュエーターとして圧電素子を有し、
前記異常ノズル検出部は、前記液体を吐出させた後に生じる、前記圧電素子の残留振動に基づいて前記異常ノズルを検出すること、
を特徴とする請求項1又は請求項2に記載の印刷装置。 - 前記接触検出部は、超音波式の距離センサーであり、
前記媒体が搬送される搬送方向に沿う前記ヘッドの上流側及び下流側に設けられること、
を特徴とする請求項1から請求項3のいずれか一項に記載の印刷装置。 - 媒体に液体を吐出する複数のノズルを有するヘッドと、前記複数のノズルのうち吐出不良を生じた異常ノズルを検出する異常ノズル検出部と、前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触を検出する接触検出部と、前記複数のノズルから前記液体を排出する排出動作を行う排出部と、を備える印刷装置の印刷方法であって、
前記異常ノズルを検出する工程と、
前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触を検出する工程と、
前記異常ノズルが検出され、且つ前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触が検出された場合に、前記排出動作を実行する工程と、
前記異常ノズルが検出され、且つ前記ヘッドと前記媒体との接触が検出されなかった場合に、前記異常ノズルを補完する補完印刷を実行する工程と、を含むこと、
を特徴とする印刷方法。
