前記第1および第2の電極(110、116)は両方とも、少なくとも2つの間隔を置かれた接点(T1−T4、B1−B4)を有し、電圧制御手段が、前記第1および第2の電極の両方に取り付けられた前記対の接点間に時間に伴って変動する電位差を印加するために配置されている、項目11に記載の方法。

前記電圧制御手段は、前記第1および第2の電極(110、116)に印加される電位差を異なる周波数で変動させる、項目12に記載の方法。
(項目14)
前記電圧制御手段は、固定または可変周波数の正弦波、三角波、鋸歯波、もしくは方形波として、前記第1および第2の電極のうちの少なくとも1つに印加される電位差を変動させる、項目12に記載の方法。
(項目15)
ディスプレイ(600)であって、
電気光学材料の層(610)と、
前記電気光学材料の層(610)に隣接して配置された一連の少なくとも3つの電極(612−624)であって、前記一連の電極は、電場を前記電気光学材料の層に印加し、前記電気光学材料の層(610)の少なくとも1つの表面上の電極(614、618、622)は、光透過性である、一連の電極と、
前記一連の電極のうちの最初の電極(612)と最後の電極(624)との間の電位差を変動させるために配置されている電圧制御手段(626)と
を備え、
(a)前記一連の電極のうちの各電極(612−624)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極および前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極の両方から前記電気光学材料の層(610)の反対側にあり、
(b)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第1の縁と、前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第2の縁とを有し、
(c)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、その電位が前記電気光学材料の層(610)を通る電流の移動によって制御されるように、電気的に絶縁されている、ディスプレイ。
(項目16)
項目15に記載のディスプレイを駆動する方法であって、前記方法は、
項目15に記載のディスプレイ(600)を提供することと、
前記電圧制御手段(626)に、前記一連の電極の前記最初の電極と最後の電極(612、624)との間に電位差を印加させることと
を含む、方法。
(項目17)
前記電圧制御手段(626)は、前記最初の電極と最後の電極(612、624)との間に時間に伴って変動する電位差を印加するために配置されている、項目16に記載の方法。
(a)ディスプレイの視認表面を形成する透明伝導性層(「前面電極」)
(b)カプセル化電気泳動媒体の層
(c)積層接着剤の層
(d)透明である必要がない基板(典型的には、ポリマーフィルム)と導体とから成る「バックプレーン」
層(a)および(d)内の各電極の少なくとも2つのエリアは、独立してアドレスされることができる電気接点のために、導体を露出するために取り除かれる。最後に、ディスプレイは、前面電極およびバックプレーンを互いに対して正および負電位に駆動し、電位勾配を各電極内に生成するための電圧制御手段を備えている。
Claims (2)
- ディスプレイ(600)であって、
電気光学材料の層(610)と、
前記電気光学材料の層(610)に隣接して配置された一連の少なくとも3つの電極(612−624)であって、前記一連の電極は、電場を前記電気光学材料の層に印加し、前記電気光学材料の層(610)の少なくとも1つの表面上の電極(614、618、622)は、光透過性である、一連の電極と、
前記一連の電極のうちの最初の電極(612)と最後の電極(624)との間の電位差を変動させるために配置されている電圧制御手段(626)と
を備え、
(a)前記一連の電極のうちの各電極(612−624)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極および前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極の両方から前記電気光学材料の層(610)の反対側にあり、
(b)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第1の縁と、前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第2の縁とを有し、
(c)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、その電位が前記電気光学材料の層(610)を通る電流の移動によって制御されるように、電気的に絶縁されており、
(d)前記電圧制御手段(626)は、前記最初の電極(612)と前記最後の電極(624)との間に時間に伴って変動する電位差を印加して前記電圧制御手段(626)によって印加される前記電位差が変動する場合に前記電気光学材料の層(610)が時間経過に伴い明暗が変化するように知覚されるようにするために配置されている、ディスプレイ。 - 請求項1に記載のディスプレイを駆動する方法であって、前記方法は、
請求項1に記載のディスプレイ(600)を提供することと、
前記電圧制御手段(626)に、前記一連の電極のうちの前記最初の電極(612)と前記最後の電極(624)との間に電位差を印加させることと
を含む、方法。
