前記一連の電極のうちの最初の電極(612)と最後の電極(624)との間の電位差を変動させるために配置されている電圧制御手段(626)と
を備え、
(a)前記一連の電極のうちの各電極(612−624)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極および前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極の両方から前記電気光学材料の層(610)の反対側にあり、
(b)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、前記一連の電極におけるそれに先行する電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第1の縁と、前記一連の電極におけるそれに続く電極と重複しているか、またはそれに隣接してある第2の縁とを有し、
(c)前記一連の電極のうち、前記最初および最後の電極以外の各電極(614−622)は、その電位が前記電気光学材料の層(610)を通る電流の移動によって制御されるように、電気的に絶縁されており、
