Description
表示装置100は、図1に示すように、発光装置1、ゲートドライバ回路(駆動回路)40およびソースドライバ回路(駆動回路)50を備えている。また、発光装置1は、図1に示すように、基板(不図示)、LED(Light Emitting Diode:発光素子)10、LED10を駆動する画素駆動回路、第1色変換層(所定の種類の色変換層)20および第2色変換層(他の種類の色変換層)30を備えている。なお、画素駆動回路は、図1、図7および図8に示す、各サブ画素(詳細は後述)中のトランジスタ2個のことである。
発光装置1は、LED10が基板上にm行×n列(m、nは自然数)の格子状に配置されたアレイになっている。ここで、図1では、説明の便宜上、LED10が基板上に6行×6列の格子状に配置された例を挙げている。このことは、図2〜図9についても同様である。
基板としては、少なくともその表面がLED10と接続できるように配線70を形成したものを利用する。基板は、例えばシリコン、ゲルマニウム、シリコンカーバイド、またはIn−Ga−Zn−O系の材料で形成されていてもよい。また、基板は、単層構造であってもよく、あるいは積層構造であってもよい。
LED10は発光素子であり、青色光を出射するLEDが用いられている。青色光を出射するLEDとしては、例えば、p型GaN層、InGaN層、および光出射面(図5参照)を有するn型GaN層が、この順に配置されたLEDであってもよい。また、LED10に替えて、例えば青色レーザーを用いてもよいし、紫外光を出射する発光素子を用いてもよい。紫外光を出射する発光素子を用いる場合、該発光素子の光出射面上に色変換層(後述の蛍光体層またはカラーフィルターなど)を配置して紫外光を青色光に変換する必要がある。
第1色変換層20および第2色変換層30は、LED10の光出射面10a(図5参照)と接触し、該光出射面10aから出射された光の波長を変換する。具体的には、第1色変換層20は、光出射面10aから出射された光の波長を変換して赤色光を出射する赤色変換層や、赤色を含む色変換層上に赤色のカラーフィルターを配置した層である。第2色変換層30は、光出射面10aから出射された光の波長を変換して緑色光を出射する緑色変換層や、緑色を含む色変換層上に緑色のカラーフィルターを配置した層である。
画素セル60は、図1に示すように、基板上に格子状に配置された4つのサブ画素を含んでいる。4つのサブ画素は、第1色変換層20とLED10とを含む第1サブ画素(図中の「R」が表示されたサブ画素)、第2色変換層30とLED10とを含む第2サブ画素(図中の「G」が表示されたサブ画素)、積層部分80とLED10とを含む第3サブ画素(図中の「K」が表示されたサブ画素)およびLED10を含む第4サブ画素(図中の「B」が表示されたサブ画素)で構成されている。
本発明の一実施形態に係る発光装置1および表示装置100には、複数のバリエーションが想定される。まず、図7に示すように、基板上に画素セル61が格子状に配置された発光装置2および表示装置200が、発光装置1および表示装置100のバリエーションとして想定される。
本発明の態様1に係る発光装置(1、2、3)は、基板に3つ以上の発光素子(LED10)が配置された発光装置であって、前記発光素子の光出射面(10a)上に形成され、前記発光素子から出射された光の波長を変換する色変換層(第1色変換層20、第2色変換層30)を少なくとも2種類以上備え、少なくとも2種類以上の前記色変換層のうち、所定の種類の前記色変換層(第1色変換層20)は、列方向に配置された2つ以上の前記発光素子の前記光出射面上に連続的に形成され、他の種類の前記色変換層(第2色変換層30)は、行方向に配置された2つ以上の前記発光素子の前記光出射面上に連続的に形成されている。
本発明は上述した各実施形態に限定されるものではなく、請求項に示した範囲で種々の変更が可能であり、異なる実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を適宜組み合わせて得られる実施形態についても本発明の技術的範囲に含まれる。さらに、各実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を組み合わせることにより、新しい技術的特徴を形成することができる。

所定の種類の前記色変換層は、2つ以上の前記発光素子の前記光出射面上に連続的に形成され、
他の種類の前記色変換層は、前記所定の種類の色変換層が形成された発光素子とは異なる2つ以上の前記発光素子の前記光出射面上に連続的に形成された、
