ROPAQUE(商標)TH−2000 Opaque Polymer(1.5μm直径、151.8g、31.9g乾燥重量、乾燥嵩密度0.36g/mL、空隙率65%)のスラリーを撹拌しながら容器に添加し、続いてROPAQUE ULTRA E Opaque Polymer(0.4μm直径、3.07g、0.95g乾燥重量、乾燥嵩密度0.58g/mL、空隙率45%)のスラリーを添加し、続いてRHOPLEX(商標)P−308 Styrene−Acrylic Binder(30.47g、15.16g乾燥重量、13.5%体積分率)、その後、ポリビニルアルコール(13.45g、1.95g乾燥重量、1.5%体積分率)、その後、水(1.2g)を添加し、25重量%の固体含有量を有する水性懸濁液を形成した。この配合物から調製した乾燥コーティングのPVCは85%であり(TH−2000は83.4%を占め、ULTRA Eは1.6%を占める)、TH2000対ULTRA Eの数比は〜1:1であった。

以下のように、試料を紙上にコーティングした。9インチ×12インチの紙のシート(重量72g/m2)を展色機上に置き、上部にクリップで固定した。コーティングされる紙の上部にわたって、一片のスコッチテープを適用して、次に適用されるコーティングが紙を通して浸出することを防いだ。テープの上の紙の上部にわたり、巻線型ロッドを載せ、ピペットを用いてテープ上の紙にわたりコーティングのビーズを載せた。紙の上でロッドを移動させて紙を均等にコーティングし、下塗り層(重量〜4から4.5g/m2)を形成した。コーティングされたシートを一片のボール紙上に置き、80℃で1分間乾燥させ、その後、オーブンから除去し、22℃及び50%相対湿度に設定された温湿度制御室(CTR)にて2時間平衡化させた。
ASTM T−499 su−64によりIGT印刷適性試験器でコーティング強度を測定した。試験結果を、コーティング強度の測定単位である粘度−速度−製品(IGT−VVP)の点から報告する。表2は、IGT−VVPにより現される、小不透明ポリマー(ULTRA E)の個数分率とコーティング強度との間の関係を示す。
下塗りを調製するために使用した手順を実質的に用いて、下塗り済み紙試料を、ロイコ染料を含有する〜3.5g/m2熱結像材料及び現像液でコーティングした。
ASTM F1405−98(2013)により、コーティングした紙を印刷した。Atlantek Paper Tester Model 200を使用した。Atlantekサーマルプリンタを用いた印刷条件は以下のとおりであった。50%市松模様パターン、最大0.8msの連続ドットパルス幅、T周期=5.000ms。プリントヘッド抵抗性は629オームであり、適用電圧21.5Vであった。X−Rite 428手持ち式分光濃度計を用いて、コーティングされた紙の印刷感熱紙光学密度を0.4mJ/ドットで測定した。
以下のように、コーティング強度に対する粒子サイズ比の効果を示すために、様々な直径を有する非中空ポリスチレンビーズの水性分散液の3つのバッチを調製した。
機械的攪拌機及び還流凝縮器を装備した4首丸底フラスコにDI水(1535g)を充填し、92℃まで加熱した。このフラスコに、過硫酸アンモニウム(90gの水中に4g)及びシードラテックス(104.5g、41%固体、60nm)を添加した。DI水(815g)、ドデシルベンゼンスルホン酸ナトリウム(25.5g、22.5%固体)、スチレン(1256g)、及びメタクリル酸(38.87g)を含有するモノマーエマルションを120分間にわたり添加した。過硫酸アンモニウム溶液(120gの水中に2g)は、モノマーエマルション供給と同時であった。反応過程中、温度を88℃に維持した。供給完了後、追加量の過硫酸アンモニウム溶液(30gの水中に0.5g)を15分間にわたり添加した。その後、反応を75℃まで冷却し、硫酸第1鉄の溶液(32.4g、0.15%活性)を充填した。残留モノマーをt−ブチルヒドロペルオキシド(25gの水中に0.80g)及びイソアスコルビン酸(25gの水中に1.10g)の溶液を供給することにより還元した。得られた分散液は32.4%の固体含有量及び187nmの粒子サイズを有した。
シードラテックス(105.4g、45%固体、100nm)を除いては、200nmビーズの調製について説明するのと実質的に同様に、300nmビーズを調製した。得られた分散液は31.8%の固体含有量及び286nmの粒子サイズを有した。
シードラテックス(133.7g、32%固体、143nm)を除いては、200nmビーズの調製について説明するのと実質的に同様に、400nmビーズを調製した。得られた分散液は31.7%の固体含有量及び407nmの粒子サイズを有した。
中空または非中空球を用いて測定することができる粒子サイズ比は、コーティング強度に対して顕著な効果を有することが分かった。表3は、IGT−VVPに対する第2の(より小さい)ポリマー粒子の粒子径の効果を示す。これらの実験の各々では、第1の(より大きい)ポリマー粒子は1.5μmであり、PVCは87.5%であり、小粒子個数分率は0.91であった。名称は、小ポリマー粒子の分散液の名称を指す。OP−96はROPAQUE(商標)OP−96 Opaque Polymerを指し、AF−1055はROPAQUE(商標)AF−1055 Opaque Polymer(The Dow Chemical Companyまたはその関連会社の商標)を指す。上記に説明するように調製した全て非中空球形ビーズである、スチレン1、2、及び3。比は小粒子径対大粒子径の比を指す。
Claims (8)
- 結合剤並びに水性中和酸コアを有する第1及び第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の水性分散液を含む、コーティング組成物であって、
a)前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が、1.0μm〜1.8μmの範囲内の直径を有し、
b)前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が、0.25μm〜1.0μmの範囲内の直径を有し、
c)前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子対前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の数比が、1:1〜20:1の範囲内であり、
d)前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径が、前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径の15〜65%の範囲内であり、
e)前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の乾燥嵩密度が、0.25〜0.5g/mLの範囲内であり、
f)前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の乾燥嵩密度が、0.30〜0.90g/mLの範囲内である、コーティング組成物。 - 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が1.2μm〜1.8μmの範囲内の直径を有し、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が0.3μm〜0.8μmの範囲内の直径を有し、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子対前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記数比が2:1〜15:1の範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径が前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径の20〜40%の範囲内である、請求項1に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が1.3μm〜1.7μmの範囲内の直径を有し、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が0.35μm〜0.6μmの範囲内の直径を有し、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子対前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記数比が3:1〜12:1の範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径が前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径の25〜33%の範囲内である、請求項2に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が0.4μm〜0.5μmの範囲内の直径を有し、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子対前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記数比が4:1〜10:1の範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径が前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記直径の27〜30%の範囲内であり、前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が1.4μm〜1.6μmの範囲内の直径を有する、請求項3に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.30〜0.45g/mLの範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.40〜0.80g/mLの範囲内である、請求項2に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.35〜0.40g/mLの範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.50〜0.75g/mLの範囲内である、請求項3に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.35〜0.40g/mLの範囲内であり、前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子の前記乾燥嵩密度が0.55〜0.65g/mLの範囲内である、請求項4に記載のコーティング組成物。
- 前記第1のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子及び前記第2のコア−外殻ポリマー粒子が、50%〜98%の範囲内の総顔料容積濃度を有する、請求項1に記載のコーティング組成物。
