Description
本発明は、像を生成する液晶ディスプレイおよびその製造方法に関する。
したがって、本発明の目的は、高いコントラスト比、広い視野角、低い駆動電圧および迅速な応答時間を有する液晶ディスプレイを提供することである。
本発明の一局面によれば、第1の基板;第1の電極および第2の電極を有する第2の基板;および第1の基板と第2の基板との間に配置され、第1の基板および第2の基板の平面に対して垂直に配向した液晶層を含み、ここで前記液晶層においてプレチルト角が形成されている、液晶ディスプレイが提供される。
−1または2種以上の光反応性モノマー、好ましくは1または2種以上の光反応性メソゲン性モノマーおよび、最も好ましくは1または2種以上の光反応性液晶モノマーをセルに導入すること、
−光反応性モノマーが自身プレチルト角を達成するまたはあるいは液晶層の液晶にプレチルト角を伝達するようにセルに電圧を印加すること、ならびに
−化学線、好ましくは、UV線をセルに照射し、光反応性モノマーまたは複数のモノマーを重合させること、
のステップを含む液晶ディスプレイの製造方法が提供される。
上述したように、本発明の一態様にかかる液晶ディスプレイは、水平電場型液晶ディスプレイの利点に対応する広い視野角および高いコントラスト比を提供し、ならびにまたラビングなしの方法によって実現可能である長所を提供する。
さらに、本発明の一態様にかかる液晶ディスプレイは、自然な形で投影された画像を見ることを可能にする、迅速な応答時間を示す。
いくつかの本発明の態様を適切な典型的な図を用いて詳細に説明する。図の要素のそれぞれに参照符号が付され、他の図において可能であればいつでも同一の符号によって同一の要素が示されるべきである。また、本発明の態様の説明において、関連する既知の構成または機能上の詳細な記載が、本発明の主旨を曖昧にする場合、その詳細な記載は除外される。
第1の基板(110)は、共通電極(図示せず)および第1の垂直配向層(160)下に配置された誘電体層を含み得る。第1の基板(110)上に形成された共通電極は、共通電極(180)とともに電場を生じさせ、第2の基板(120)上に形成された画素電極(190)は、下記のように、液晶層(130)を回転させる働きをする。
さらに、画素電極(190)のすべては、薄膜トランジスタのソースおよびドレイン電極とともに1つの層の形態で形成され得、共通電極(180)は、ゲート線と同一の材料で作られ得る。
他の共通電極(284)は、透明導電金属酸化物、例えばインジウム錫酸化物(ITO)またはインジウム亜鉛酸化物(IZO)などで作られた透明金属層中に形成され得る。
図5(A)〜(D)は、図3(A)〜(D)におけるのと同じ方法で、第2の例にかかるLCD(200)中で光反応性液晶モノマーにプレチルト角を付与する方法を示す。図5(B)および(C)に示すように、方法は、電圧印加デバイスにより電圧を印加すること、およびUVを適用することにより水平電場(L)を生じさせることを含み、また、フリンジ領域(X)の作用により光反応性液晶モノマーに均一なプレチルト角を付与することを含む。
図6aおよび6bに関し、第3の態様にかかる液晶ディスプレイ(200)は、それが、互いに向き合う第1の板(310)および第2の板(320)ならびに第1の板(310)および第2の板(320)の間に配置される液晶層(330)を含む点において、第1の態様にかかる液晶ディスプレイ(100)ならびに第2の態様に係るLCD(200)と同一である。第1の板(310)および第2の板(320)は、液晶層(330)の方向に対して垂直に整列した第1の垂直配向層(360)および第2の垂直配向層(370)を含み、および第2の板(320)は、2つの共通電極(380)および画素電極(390)を含む。
図7(A)〜(D)に示すように、第3の態様にかかるLCD(300)中で光反応性液晶モノマーにプレチルト角を付与する方法は、光反応性液晶モノマーに均一なプレチルト角を付与するステップにおいて電圧印加デバイスを用いて電圧を印加する際に水平電場(L)によってならびに傾いた電場(Y)によって光反応性液晶モノマーに均一なプレチルト角を付与することを除いて、第1および第2の態様にかかるLCD(100、200)と同一である。
一方で、上の態様にかかるLCDは、不安定な配向および応答時間の緩みに起因する回位の問題を解決できる。

Claims (6)
- −第1の基板、
−電圧が印加された際に水平電場を生じさせる第1の電極および第2の電極を有する第2の基板、
−垂直配向のためのラビングなしの垂直配向層
ならびに
−第1の基板と第2の基板との間に配置され、第1の基板および第2の基板の平面に対して垂直に配向した、正の誘電異方性を有する液晶層、ここで、プレチルト角が上記垂直配向層および光反応性液晶モノマーによるポリマーの作用によって前記液晶層において形成されており、該プレチルト角は、前記水平電場内において、液晶材料及び光反応性液晶モノマーが混合されて重合した位置状態において形成された、第1の基板および/または第2の基板に対して80°以上〜89.9°以下のものである、
を含む液晶ディスプレイ。 - 少なくとも第1の基板が、さらに、垂直配向のための配向層を含む、請求項1に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- さらに、第2の基板上に形成された第3の電極を含み、および、第1、第2および第3の電極に電圧が印加された際に、水平電場およびフリンジ領域が形成される、請求項1または2に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- さらに、第1の基板上に形成された第3の電極を含み、および、第1、第2および第3の電極に電圧が印加された際に、水平および傾いた電場が形成される、請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- −第1の基板を用意すること、
−電圧が印加された際に水平電場を生じさせる第1の電極および第2の電極を有する第2の基板を用意すること、
−垂直配向のためのラビングなしの垂直配向層を第2の基板上に設けること、
−1または2種以上の光反応性液晶モノマーを含む、正の誘電異方性を有する液晶層を、第1の基板と第2の基板との間に形成され、セルの内側表面は前記垂直配向のためのラビングなしの垂直配向層が面しているセルに導入すること、
−光反応性液晶モノマーおよび/または液晶層が、第1の基板および/または第2の基板に対して80°以上〜89.9°以下のプレチルト角を達成するようにセルに電圧を印加して水平電場を生じさせること、および
−セルにUV線を照射して光反応性液晶モノマーを重合すること、
のステップを含む、液晶ディスプレイの製造方法。 - セルが、
−第1の基板、
−電圧が印加された際に水平電場を生じさせる第1の電極および第2の電極を有する第2の基板、ならびに
−第1の基板または第2の基板上に形成された第3の電極、
