鉄押出成形による直径6mmの鉄棒を長さ258mmで切断した後、厚さ約3μmの化学ニッケルメッキを施したものを用意した。
エチレン−プロピレン−ジエン系ゴム(EPDM)100質量部、酸化亜鉛5質量部、ステアリン酸1質量部、導電性カーボンブラック11質量部、パラフィンオイル50質量部、加硫促進剤2−メルカプトベンゾチアゾール(MBT)2質量部、加硫促進剤ジペンタメチレンチウラムテトラスルフィド(DPTT)1質量部、加硫促進剤ジブチルジチオカルバミン酸亜鉛 (ZDBC)1質量部、イオウ1質量部、発泡剤ADCA8質量部、尿素系発泡助剤3質量部を混錬りし未加硫のゴム組成物を作製した。次に、クロスヘッド押出し機を用いて上記導電性弾性体層用の混合物をホース状に押し出し、同時にその押出し中心に導電性軸芯体を挿入し、ロール状に一体化した。続いて、このロール両端の余分なゴムを取り除いた後、連続炉にて加熱、加硫・発泡反応を行った後、冷却して硬化し、外径14.0mmの原料ローラを得た。この原料ローラのホース端部を切断して長さを233mmにすることで、導電性弾性体層が形成された導電性軸芯体を得た。さらに、該導電性弾性体層の表面を研磨機によって研磨した。ローラの形状をローラの軸芯体を通る断面で見れば、研磨によって表面が円弧を描くような形状に仕上げられている。同じ断面で見て、ローラの両端となる端面の外径を端部径、一番太い中央部の外径を中央径と呼ぶことにすると、このときの中央径は12.00mm、端部径は11.35mmになるようにしてある。この形状については、図8に示す。。ここで、導電性弾性体層を直径30mmの金属ドラムに当接させ、導電性軸心体両端で支持しながら回転させて抵抗測定を行うと、50V印加時の体積固有抵抗が約104Ω・cmであった。
被覆層としては、内層及び外層の二層からなる被覆層とし、外層に球状ウレタン粒子を添加した(平均粒子径1.5μmのもののみPMMA粒子)。
上記被覆用のチューブを上記導電性弾性体層が形成された導電性軸芯体よりも長い所定の長さに合わせて切断した後、チューブ被覆装置(不図示)により原料ローラの導電性弾性体層外周に嵌め込み、圧密着させた。その後、導電性弾性体層から外側にはみ出るチューブ端部を2mmの余裕を持たせて切除して帯電ローラを得た。ここで、直径30mmの金属ドラムに当接させ、導電性軸心体両端で支持しながら回転させて抵抗測定を行うと、200V印加時の抵抗が約106Ω・cmであった。
粒子径及び添加量を変えて作製した各々の帯電ローラについて評価する前に、表面粗度測定機等により帯電ローラの表面の形状データを取得した。得られたデータは図3に示すように空間連続的な断面形状データとなっているが、このデータの最高部を0とし、低くなるに従ってプラスの値をとるよう座標変換を施した(図4)。
評価は、電子写真装置「HP Color LaserJet 3700」(商品名、ヒューレット・パッカード社製)を用いて行った。帯電能力の評価は、カートリッジに帯電ローラを組み込んで連続1500枚の通紙パターンの画出しを行った後、次いで評価用のハーフトーン画像を出力し、得られたハーフトーン画像に帯電横スジが現れていないかを目視により確認することで行った。また、リーク耐性についての評価は、カートリッジに装着する画像形成体として直径0.3mmのピンホールがあるものを用い、帯電ローラを組み込んで画出しを行うことでなされた。得られた画像に上のピンホールに由来する直径0.5mm以上の滲みや横黒帯の発生がないかを目視により確認して評価した。

Claims (6)
- 導電性軸芯体の周りに導電性弾性体層を形成し、その外側に少なくとも1層の被覆層を有する帯電ローラであって、
前記被覆層が押出し成形によって形成されたチューブであり、該被覆層の最外層がスチレン系の熱可塑性エラストマーからなり、該最外層中に平均粒子径が3μm以上10μm以下である球状ウレタン粒子を含み、かつ下記算出方法で表される当接部放電寄与面積率が10%以下であることを特徴とする帯電ローラ;
(当接部放電寄与面積率の算出方法:前記被覆層の表面の断面形状データを取得し、該データの最高部を0とし、低くなるに従ってプラスの値をとるよう座標変換を施す。該座標変換を施したデータを元にして、同じ高さ毎のデータ数を頻度で表し、ヒストグラムを作成する。該ヒストグラムから、4.8μm以上48μm以下のデータ数の割合を計算し、当接部放電寄与面積率を算出する。)。 - 前記被覆層の体積固有抵抗が106Ω・cm以上1011Ω・cm以下であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の帯電ローラ。
- 画像形成体に接触して帯電させる請求項1又は2に記載の帯電ローラ。
- 請求項1乃至3のいずれか1項に記載の帯電ローラを内部に組込んでいることを特徴とする画像形成装置用カートリッジ。
- 請求項4に記載のカートリッジを内部に組込むことを特徴とする画像形成装置。
- 請求項1乃至3のいずれか1項に記載の帯電ローラを本体内部に組込んでいることを特徴とする画像形成装置。
