は下記式(I)の関係を有することを特徴とする。

最初に、配向膜として、下記化学式(1)で示される化学構造のポリイミドを各種合成した。
(1)表1(a)〜(d):共通材料として、低屈折率成分=P−1−a1〜a5及びP−2−a1〜a5、
(2)表2:高屈折率成分=P−1−b1c1−0〜100、P−2−b1c1−0〜100
(3)表3:高屈折率成分=P−1−b1c2−0〜100、P−2−b1c2−0〜100
(4)表4:高屈折率成分=P−1−b2c1−0〜100、P−2−b2c1−0〜100
(5)表5:高屈折率成分=P−1−b2c2−0〜100、P−2−b2c2−0〜100
次に、実施例1で示した配向膜材料を用いて、図3に示したFFS方式の液晶表示素子を作製し、光透過率を評価した結果について説明する。FFS方式はその素子構造がIPS方式に似た点があり、上下の下地基板の片側にのみ画素電極PXと共通電極CTが形成されており、液晶はその間の電場の有無に応じて、面内で回転する。従って、電場が印加されていない初期の配向状態もIPS方式と同様であり、その配向膜606(及び705)に施すべき配向方向同様にすればよく、用いる液晶も、誘電異方性Δεが正のものを使うことができる。
次に、実施例1で示した配向膜材料を用いて、図4に示したVA方式の液晶表示素子を作製し、光透過率を評価した結果について説明する。VA方式はIPS方式やFFS方式とは異なり、上下の下地基板に画素電極PXと共通電極CTが形成されており、誘電異方性Δεが負であるVA方式用の液晶材料が用いられ、電場が印加されていない初期の配向状態は液晶分子が基板面に対してほぼ垂直となるように配向処理されねばならない。このため、通常のラビングを用いることが困難である。ここでは、下記技術文献4を参考に、斜め方向から偏光紫外線照射した光配向処理を行った。
Claims (15)
- 少なくとも一方が透明な第一の基板および第二の基板と、
前記第一の基板と前記第二の基板との間に配置された液晶層と、
前記第一の基板および前記第二の基板の少なくとも一方の基板に形成され、前記液晶層に電界を印加するための電極群と、
前記電極群に接続された複数のアクティブ素子と、
前記第一の基板および前記第二の基板の少なくとも一方の基板に配置された、一方の面で前記液晶層と接する配向膜と、
前記第一の基板および前記第二の基板の少なくとも一方の基板において、前記配向膜の他方側の面と接する下地層と、
を備える液晶表示装置において、
前記配向膜は、屈折率の異なる複数種の有機化合物を含み、
複数種の前記有機化合物の、それぞれの極性が異なることによって、前記配向膜は膜厚方向に前記有機化合物のそれぞれが分離される構造を有し、
前記配向膜の屈折率は、前記配向膜と前記液晶層との界面から、前記配向膜と前記下地層との界面にかけて単調増加し、
前記液晶層の最小屈折率nLCと、
前記液晶層と前記配向膜との界面における、前記配向膜の屈折率nF2と、
前記配向膜と前記下地層との界面における、前記配向膜の屈折率nF1と、
前記下地層の屈折率nS2と、
は下記式(I)の関係を有する、
- 前記下地層は、可視光を透過する透明層であり、
前記電極群は共通電極および画素電極を含み、
前記下地層の前記配向膜に接する面と反対側の面は、前記共通電極および前記画素電極のいずれか一方の電極と接している、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記電極群は共通電極および画素電極を含み、
前記下地層は、前記配向膜の前記液晶層に接する面と反対側の面に接する層間絶縁膜と、前記層間絶縁膜の前記配向膜側の面の一部に備えられた、前記配向膜側に突出する、前記共通電極および前記画素電極のいずれか一方の電極と、からなり、
前記配向膜は、前記下地層上に形成されており、
前記配向膜の膜厚は、前記一方の電極の膜厚より大きい、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記一方の電極の、表面の屈折率は、内部の屈折率より低い、
ことを特徴とする請求項2乃至5いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜は、面内に光学的異方性を有する、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至6いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜の面内の光学的異方性軸の方向と、液晶層の配向規制方向とが同じである、ことを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記配向膜を構成する複数種の前記有機化合物のうち、最も屈折率が高い前記有機化合物の可視域における屈折率が1.7以上である、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至8いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜がポリアミド酸エステルを前駆体とするポリイミドで形成されている、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至9いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜は、光配向処理によって液晶配向能が付与されている、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至10いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜は、ラビング処理によって液晶配向能が付与されている、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至10いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜の液晶配向能が付与された領域は前記配向膜表面から20nmまでの範囲にある、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至12いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜は、液晶配向能が付与された後に、前記配向膜を形成する化合物同士が架橋している、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至13いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記配向膜の表示領域に対する被覆率が50%以上である、
ことを特徴とする請求項1乃至14いずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
