Description
図は概略的であり、一律の縮尺では示されていない。対応する素子は、概して同じ符号によって示されている。
(Sは、固体バリヤ材料14を示す)オイル膜はバリヤ又は材料14上には形成されない。これは、上のオイル膜5’及び下のオイル膜5が第1の状態又は第2の状態において決して互いに接続されないことを意味する。各層は、上(又は下)のAF1600層を通る貫通接続(図4に示す電極12)によって水6にコンタクトすることにより、独立に切り替えることができる。実際、これは、電極12によって水6を接地し、電極7又は電極11に電圧を印加することによって行うことができる。この装置は、拡散ホワイト反射体15を更に有する。視野方向は、図4に矢印16によって示される。
図5の実施形態では、オイル5は、カラーディスプレイを実現するため、異なる色素を使うことによって異なる色を有する。この例では、図5に示される構成に対してできるだけ高い輝度を得るために、3種類の例えばオイル、即ち、赤の層5R、緑の層5G及び青の層5Bが使用される。1つの画素は、黒の吸収体23(背景)及び2つのサブ画素A及びBを有し、各々のサブ画素は、図4に示されるものに相当する構成を有する。第1の状態において上部のオイル層5Bは、サブ画素の各々の半分を覆っている。これは、層8’(AF1600)の表面エネルギーを部分的に変更することによって実現できる。他の液体(この場合、水)は、電極12を通じて、固定電圧、例えばグランド(0V)とされる。
例1で生じる白の状態での輝度の変動は、白のオイルを使うことによって回避できる。白のオイルは、例えば、散乱粒子をオイルに分散させることによって得られる。
あるいは、図7に示されるように、減法混色を使うことができる。各サブ画素内に2つのオイル層5が使用される場合、サブ画素当たり1つの原色を実現することができる。固定された減法混色カラーフィルタ21が上部に備えられる場合、表示性能の大きな改良が得られる。図7に示される画素は、3つのサブ画素A、B及びCから成る。サブ画素の各々では、減法混色の原色の順序が交番する。即ち、サブ画素Aに対してM(agenta)、C(yan)、Y(ellow)であり、サブ画素Bに対してC(yan)、Y(ellow)、M(agenta)であり、サブ画素Cに対してY(ellow)、M(agenta)、C(yan)である。

Claims (32)
- 第1の支持プレートと第2の支持プレートとの間の画素のスペースに互いに混合しない少なくとも1つの第1の液体及び第2の液体を有する複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記第2の液体は電気導電性又は有極性であり、前記第1の支持プレートが前記画素内に疎水性層を含んでおり、
当該表示装置の前記画素は、電圧が印加されない少なくとも一つの第1の状態と電圧が印加される異なる第2の状態との間で電気的に切替え可能であり、
前記第1の状態において、前記第1の液体は第1の液体層を形成し、前記第2の液体は前記第1の液体層上に第2の液体層を形成し、前記第1の液体層は前記第2の液体層と前記第1の支持プレートとの間に設けられ、
前記疎水性層は、前記第1の状態において前記第1の液体のみによって隣接され、前記第2の状態において前記第2の液体のみによって隣接される領域を有しており、
前記第1の液体は前記第1の状態及び前記第2の状態において前記画素のスペースに閉じ込められる、
表示装置。 - 前記第2の液体は前記画素の前記スペースに閉じ込められる、請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第2の液体は、幾つかの画素に共通する層を形成する、請求項1による表示装置。
- 複数の画素は、前記第1の支持プレートと前記第2の支持プレートとの間の高さより小さい高さに延びる複数の画素壁を有する、請求項3による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記第1の状態及び前記第2の状態において、前記第1の支持プレート及び前記第2の支持プレートのいずれかのみに隣接する、請求項1〜4のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第2の状態において、前記第1の液体は、前記第1の支持プレートと前記第2の支持プレートとの間において前記第1の支持プレートの前記領域によって定められる体積を欠いている、請求項1〜5のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 画素が画成されたスペースに対応し、前記第2の状態において、前記第2の液体が実質的に完全に前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記表示装置が、画素内に前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面において不均一な電界を作る手段を有する請求項1又は7による表示装置。
- 電極と前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面との間の誘電層は、厚さが変化する或いは変化する誘電率を有する、請求項8による表示装置。
- 前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面は変化するぬれ性を有する、又は前記第1の液体層は変化する厚さを有する請求項1又は7による表示装置。
- 前記画素は、画成されたスペースに対応し、該スペースは別の第1の液体を含み、該別の第1の液体は別の第1の状態において別の第1の液体層を形成し、該別の第1の液体層は前記第2の支持プレートに隣接する、請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記画素が前記スペースを少なくとも2つのサブ画素に分割する壁部を有し、前記第1の状態において前記別の第1の液体層が両方のサブ画素内で少なくとも部分的に前記第2の支持プレートに隣接する請求項11による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体層及び前記別の第1の液体層が異なる色を有する請求項11による表示装置。
- 前記第2の状態において、前記第1の液体層及び前記別の第1の液体層のうちの少なくともいずれかが前記スペースの壁部に隣接する請求項7、11及び12のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第2の状態において前記第1の液体層及び前記別の第1の液体層の一部が混ざることを防止するための手段を有する請求項14による表示装置。
- 中間状態を得るための駆動手段を有する請求項1〜15のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 当該表示装置に入射する光を吸収又は反射する吸収体又は反射体を有する請求項1〜16のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記反射体は拡散性を有する請求項17による表示装置。
- 前記第2の液体は、散乱性を有する液体、反射性を有する液体及び吸収性を有する液体のいずれかである、請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記散乱性を有する液体はTiO2を含む、請求項19による表示装置。
- カラーフィルタを有する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は反射性を有する、請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第2の液体は適切な顔料を含む、請求項22による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は前記第2の状態において液滴を形成する、請求項1〜23のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記第1の状態において前記画素内で広がり、前記第2の状態において前記画素内で収縮する、請求項1〜24のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記画素のいずれの状態においても前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する、請求項1〜25のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記第1の状態及び前記第2の状態において前記第1の支持プレートの一部に隣接している、請求項1〜26のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記画素は、静電力を用いて前記第1の液体を前記第1の状態と前記第2の状態との間で切り替える、請求項1〜27のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記第1の状態から前記第2の状態への切り替えにおいて、前記第2の液体に置き換えられる、請求項1〜28のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体及び前記第2の液体は、前記第1の状態において、前記画素の所定の範囲にわたって、実質的に互いに隣接する、請求項1〜29のいずれか一項による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は散乱性を有する、請求項1による表示装置。
- 当該装置に入射する光を拡散するように反射する拡散性の反射体を含む、請求項1による表示装置。
