Description
図5の実施例では、オイル5は、カラーディスプレイを実現するため、異なる色素を使うことによって異なる色を有する。この例では、図5に示される構成に対してできるだけ高い輝度を得るために、3種類の例えばオイル、即ち、赤の層5R、緑の層5G及び青の層5Bが使用される。1つの画素は、黒の吸収体23(背景)及び2つのサブ画素A及びBを有し、各々のサブ画素は、図4に示されるものに相当する構成を有する。第1の状態において上部のオイル層5Bは、サブ画素の各々の半分を覆っている。これは、層8’(AF1600)の表面エネルギーを部分的に変更することによって実現できる。他の液体(この場合、水)は、電極12を通じて、固定電圧、例えばグランド(0V)とされる。
例1で生じる白の状態での輝度の変化は、白のオイルを使うことによって回避できる。白のオイルは、例えば、散乱粒子をオイルに分散させることによって得られる。
あるいは、図7に示されるように、減法混色の原色を使うことができる。各サブ画素内の2つのオイル層5が使用される場合、サブ画素当たり1つの原色を実現することができる。固定された減法混色カラーフィルタ21が上部に備えられる場合、表示性能の大きな改良が得られる。図7に示される画素は、3つのサブ画素A、B及びCから成る。サブ画素の各々では、減法混色の原色の順序が交番する。即ち、サブ画素Aに対してM(agenta)、C(yan)、Y(ellow)であり、サブ画素Bに対してC(yan)、Y(ellow)、M(agenta)であり、サブ画素Cに対してY(ellow)、M(agenta)、C(yan)である。
Claims (5)
- 第1の支持プレートと第2の支持プレートとの間の画素のスペースに互いに混合しない少なくとも1つの第1の液体及び第2の液体を有する複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記第2の液体は電気導電性又は有極性であり、前記第1の支持プレートが前記画素内に疎水性層を含んでおり、
当該表示装置の前記画素は、電圧が印加されない少なくとも一つの第1の状態と電圧が印加される異なる第2の状態との間で電気的に切替え可能であり、
前記第1の状態において、前記第1の液体は第1の液体層を形成し、前記第2の液体は前記第1の液体層上に第2の液体層を形成し、前記第1の液体層は前記第2の液体層と前記第1の支持プレートとの間に設けられ、
前記疎水性層は、前記第1の状態において前記第1の液体のみによって隣接されるとともに前記第2の状態において前記第2の液体のみによって隣接される領域を有しており、前記第1の状態及び第2の状態は前記領域に表示効果を与え、
前記第1の液体は前記第1の状態及び前記第2の状態において前記画素のスペースに閉じ込められる、表示装置。 - 前記第2の液体は前記画素の前記スペースに閉じ込められる、請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第2の液体は、幾つかの画素に共通する層を形成する、請求項1による表示装置。
- 複数の画素は、前記第1の支持プレートと前記第2の支持プレートとの間の高さより小さい高さに延びる複数の画素壁を有する、請求項3による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体は、前記第1の状態において前記画素内で広がり、前記第2の状態において前記画素内で収縮する、請求項1〜4のいずれか一項による表示装置。
