Description
但し、dは光学補償層14の厚さである。
図4,図5に示す構造の液晶表示装置を製造した。但し、対向基板120には光学補償層123として厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが80nm及び240nmの高分子フィルム123a,123bを形成した。これらの高分子フィルム123a,123bの面積比は1:1とした。また、液晶層130を構成する液晶として、誘電率異方性が負の液晶を使用した。
実施例1と同様にして、実施例2の液晶表示装置を製造した。但し、実施例2では、1画素を3つの領域に分割し、光学補償層として、各領域毎に厚さ方向の補償能力が異なる高分子フィルムを形成した。すなわち、第1の領域には厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが80nmの高分子フィルムを形成し、第2の領域には厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが120nmの高分子フィルムを形成し、第3の領域には厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが240nmの高分子フィルムを形成した。なお、これらの高分子フィルムの面積比は1:1:1である。また、液晶層のもつリタデーションRLCの値は、実施例1と同様に340nmであった。
前記液晶パネルを挟んで配置された第1及び第2の直線偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の直線偏光板との間に配置された第1の円偏光子と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の直線偏光板との間に配置された第2の円偏光子と、
1画素毎に厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが相互に異なる複数の領域を有し、前記第1及び第2の円偏光子の間に配置された光学補償層と
を具備することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。

Claims (3)
- 相互に対向して配置された第1及び第2の基板と、それらの間に封入された誘電率異方性が負の液晶からなる液晶層と、前記第1及び第2の基板のいずれか一方の基板の前記液晶層側の面に配置されたカラーフィルタとにより構成される液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルを挟んで配置された第1及び第2の直線偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の直線偏光板との間に配置された第1の円偏光子と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の直線偏光板との間に配置された第2の円偏光子と、
画素全体に形成され、1画素毎に厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが相互に異なる複数の領域を有し、前記第1及び第2の円偏光子の間に配置された光学補償層とを具備し、
前記光学補償層は、前記領域毎に厚さが異なる複数の高分子フィルムからなり、前記領域毎に前記液晶層のもつ負のリタデーションを個別に補償することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 相互に対向して配置された第1及び第2の基板とそれらの間に封入された誘電率異方性が負の液晶からなる液晶層と、前記第1及び第2の基板のいずれか一方の基板の前記液晶層側の面に配置されたカラーフィルタとにより構成される液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルを挟んで配置された第1及び第2の直線偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の直線偏光板との間に配置された第1の円偏光子と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の直線偏光板との間に配置された第2の円偏光子と、
画素全体に形成され、1画素毎に厚さ方向の補償能力Rthが相互に異なる複数の領域を有し、前記第1及び第2の円偏光子の間に配置された光学補償層とを具備し、
前記光学補償層は、前記領域毎に屈折率異方性が異なる複数の高分子フィルムからなり、前記領域毎に前記液晶層のもつ負のリタデーションを個別に補償することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記光学補償層が、前記第1及び第2の基板のうちのいずれか一方の液晶層側の面に形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
