Abstract
【解決手段】カラーフィルタの色毎に液晶層の厚さが設定された液晶パネル20の両側に、それぞれ第1及び第2の偏光板25a,25bを配置する。そして、液晶パネル20と第1の偏光板25aとの間に第1の位相差板24aを配置し、液晶パネル20と第2の偏光板25bとの間に第2の位相差板24bを配置する。これらの第1及び第2の位相差板は、主屈折率のうち面内方向の屈折率の最大値をNx、Nxの方向と直交する方向の屈折率をNy、厚さをdとしたときに、(Nx−Ny)×dの値の差が10nm以下となるものを使用する。

ここで、dは位相差板の厚さである。これらの面内方向の位相差Rin及び厚さ方向の位相差Rthの最適値は、液晶層のもつリタデーションと相関関係がある。液晶層のリタデーションRLCは、下記(3)式により示される。
ここで、Δnは液晶層における異常光と正常光との屈折率の差、dkは液晶層の厚さである。
図2は、本発明の第1の実施形態に係るマルチギャップ方式の液晶表示装置の構造を示す模式図である。
図17は、本発明の第2の実施形態の液晶表示装置を示す模式図である。なお、図17において、図2と同一物には同一符号を付してその詳しい説明は省略する。
前記液晶パネルを挟んで配置された第1及び第2の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の偏光板との間に配置された第1の位相差板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の偏光板との間に配置された第2の位相差板とを有し、
前記第1及び第2の位相差板は、主屈折率のうち面内方向の屈折率の最大値をNx、Nxの方向と直交する方向の屈折率をNy、厚さをdとしたときに、(Nx−Ny)×dの値の差が10nm以下であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。

Claims (5)
- カラーフィルタの色毎に液晶層の厚さが設定された液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルを挟んで配置された第1及び第2の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の偏光板との間に配置された第1の位相差板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の偏光板との間に配置された第2の位相差板とを有し、
前記第1及び第2の位相差板は、主屈折率のうち面内方向の屈折率の最大値をNx、Nxの方向と直交する方向の屈折率をNy、厚さをdとしたときに、(Nx−Ny)×dの値の差が10nm以下であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶パネルが、一対の基板と、それらの基板間に封入された誘電率異方性が負の液晶からなる液晶層とにより構成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 厚さ方向の屈折率をNzとしたときに、前記第1及び第2の位相差板は、いずれもNx>Ny=Nzの関係を満たすことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記カラーフィルタとして、赤色、緑色及び青色の3種類のカラーフィルタが設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記赤色カラーフィルタが形成された部分の液晶層の厚さが、前記青色カラーフィルタが形成された部分の液晶層の厚さよりも厚いことを特徴とする請求項4に記載の液晶表示装置。
