Abstract

An injection device having a drive mechanism to expel selectively a dose of medicament from a medicament cartridge through a needle unit is disclosed. The injection device further comprises an electronic control unit to control the drive mechanism, and a dispense button to generate a dispense button signal to the electronic control unit indicative of the dose to be expelled in which an arm button causes a first arm button signal to be sent to the electronic control unit to permit the dose to be expelled.

The present invention relates to an improvement of an infusion device, and in particular to an improvement of a portable infusion device for controlling and administering a drug amount.

Such infusion devices are typically used by diabetics to manage their own doses of insulin or insulin type drugs. It goes without saying that such an injection device is also suitable for injection of other drugs.

Such administration was once managed using disposable syringes. That is, a dose was first filled into a syringe from another vial or another container and then injected using that syringe. However, such a device has several difficulties. Specifically, such a device was not suitable for the sick. For those who are not, such syringes have been publicly unsuccessful and have been problematic for general use.

In order to overcome these problems, several so-called pen-type injection devices have been developed. Because these devices are small, they can be carried in a jacket pocket or the like, and in addition, administration can be repeated from a cartridge or ampoule attached to the infusion device. The present invention is particularly applicable to such a pen-type injection device.

While such pen-type injection devices provide a significant improvement over disposable hypodermic syringes, there are still problems remaining.

The present invention provides a pen-type injection device that has improved usability and is easy to handle for the user.

In the following, the present invention will be described based on examples only with reference to the accompanying drawings.

1 to 3, a pen-type injection device 2 according to the present invention is shown. The injection device 2 includes a main body housing 4 to which an end cap, that is, a cover 6 is detachably attached.

A control panel region 8 is secured at the first end of the main body housing 4. In this area, a display panel 10 which is typically an LCD panel, a first dose control button 12 and a second dose control button 14 are arranged, and the first and second dose control buttons are used for infusion medicine. It is an operation button for adjusting the increase / decrease in the dosage. An arm button 16 is also arranged in the control panel area 10 of the illustrated embodiment.

A plurality of grooves or depressions 20 are provided on both sides of the control panel region 10 along the vertical axis of the injection device 2. These grooves or depressions are provided to make it easier for the user to hold the injection device 2.

A needle unit 22 is attached to the second end of the main body housing 4 so as to be detachable from the main body housing. A mold forming portion 24 is further provided at the second end of the main body housing 4.

In use, the drug cartridge 40 or ampoule is housed in the body housing 4 below the mold forming portion 24. This mold forming portion is preferably transparent so that the cartridge 40 is visible to the user.

A start button 26 is also disposed at the second end of the body housing 4. It will be appreciated that if the end cap 6 is attached to the second end of the housing, there is no risk of the start button 26 being accidentally depressed or the needle unit 22 stuck. A cover detection switch 28 for detecting whether or not the end cap, that is, the cover 6 is correctly attached, is also disposed at the second end of the main body housing 4.

FIG. 3 shows a start contact 30, an arm contact 32, a first dose control contact 34, and a second dose control contact 36 corresponding to each button. A dispensing contact 19 corresponding to the dispensing button 18 is also shown.

In FIG. 3, it will be understood that a place for storing one or more batteries, for example, is provided as the power source 38. Similarly, a suitable region in which the medicine cartridge 40 or ampoule is to be mounted is also arranged. By accessing this area from the removable mold part 24 of the body housing 4, the user can replace the cartridge 40 or ampoule as needed. A driving mechanism 42 is disposed in the third region of the main body housing 4 and is driven by the power from the power source 38 to operate on the medicine cartridge 40 or the ampoule.

The medicine cartridge 40 or the ampoule is provided with a container 44 or a sleeve, and a head end which is one end thereof is closed by a cover 46 and the other end is sealed by a movable stopper 48 or a stopper. When the needle unit 22 penetrates the cover 46 at a predetermined position and the stopper 48 moves in the direction of the cover 46, the medicine filled in the medicine cartridge 40 or the ampoule is pushed out. The cartridge may be a 3 ml cartridge according to ISO / FDIS 11608 Part 3, or any cartridge that is compatible with the infusion device.

The movement of the stopper 48 or the stopper is performed by the movement of a piston or plunger 50 that forms part of the drive mechanism 42. The piston or plunger 50 has a first fully retracted position (not shown) where the drug cartridge 40 or ampoule can be replaced, and a second where drug is fully discharged from the drug cartridge 40 or ampoule. You can move between fully extended positions. An end stop switch 52 can be disposed on the body housing 4 to detect when the piston 50 is in the fully retracted position. The drive mechanism 42 is driven by a motor 54 controlled by an electronic control unit (not shown). In order for the piston 50 to be able to move between the first position and the second position, the motor 54 must be capable of reverse rotation. It is preferable to allow the user to feel the vibration of the motor 54 and the drive mechanism 42 associated therewith, or to hear a sound that they are operating. In this way, the user's confidence that the injection device 2 is operating further increases.

Control buttons have several functions. The user can select a desired dose by the dose control buttons 12 and 14. The user can approve selection of the desired dose with the dosing arm button 16. The dose level can be increased with the first dose control button and the dose level can be decreased with the second dose control button. The dose value can be reset to zero by depressing the dose control buttons 12 and 14 (press and hold for 1-2 seconds for a short time). Then, you can raise (or lower) by one scale (half scale) increments with the input button.

When the dose control buttons 12 and 14 are pressed once, the selected dose is designed to change by one scale (half scale). In another embodiment, pressing any button and holding that state will scroll the dose value (increase or decrease) and change the dose value quickly.

The user can start administration of the selected dose by pressing the administration button 18. When the start button 26 is pressed, a dosage unit is dispensed from the cartridge 40. Therefore, when air is mixed into the injection device 2, the start button 26 can be pushed to expel the air. A clasp for releasing the lid for accessing the cartridge 40 is provided.

Since the cartridge 40 is a standard size, each cartridge 40 is emptied by the same movement amount of the plunger driven by the drive mechanism. Since the cartridge 40 is known to be empty when the plunger 50 is in the fully extended position, the user is shown an empty indication.

When the stopper for releasing the lid is operated to remove the empty cartridge 40, the drive mechanism 42 is operated to reverse the feed screw 60, and the feed screw 60 is provided at a known reference point. The plunger 50 is retracted until the end stop switch 52 is hit.
