Claims (7)
- 液晶層と、前記液晶層の観察者側に配置された第1基板と、前記液晶層を介して前記第1基板に対向するように配置された第2基板と、第1基板の観察者側に配置された第1偏光板とを備えた液晶表示装置であって、
前記第1基板は第1方向に配列された複数の繊維を含む第1プラスチック基板を有し、前記第1偏光板の透過軸は、前記第1方向と略平行になるようにまたは略直交するように配置されている、液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1プラスチック基板は、前記第1方向に交差する第2方向に配列された複数の繊維をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1方向と前記第2方向は、互いに略直交する、請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1プラスチック基板は面内にリタデーションを有し、前記基板面内において屈折率が最大となる方向が前記第1偏光板の透過軸と45°未満の角度で交差するように配置されている、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1プラスチック基板の面内のマクロなリタデーションは5nm未満である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1基板は、前記液晶層側の表面にラビング処理された第1配向膜を有し、
前記第1配向膜のラビング方向は、前記第1方向と略平行になるようにまたは略直交するように設定されている、請求項1から5のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶層はTN型液晶層であって、
前記第2基板の前記液晶層と反対側に配置された第2偏光板と、
前記第1基板と前記液晶層との間および/または前記第2基板と前記液晶層との間に配置された少なくとも1つの位相差板とを有し、
前記第1偏光板と前記第2偏光板は、それらの透過軸が互いに略直交または略平行になるように配置されており、
前記少なくとも1つの位相差板の屈折率楕円体の3つの互いに直交する3つの主軸であるa軸、b軸およびc軸における主屈折率をna、nbおよびncとすると、na=nb>ncの関係を有し、a軸は前記少なくとも位相差板の面内にあり、前記c軸はbc面内において前記位相差板の法線方向から傾斜角θだけ傾斜しており、
前記少なくとも1つの位相差板のc軸は、前記第1偏光板および第2偏光板の内の前記液晶層に対して同じ側に配置されている偏光板の吸収軸と略平行になるように配置されている、請求項1から6のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
