(a)それぞれ異なる等電点を有するジルコニアのコロイド粒子とセリアのコロイド粒子とを少なくとも含有するゾルを提供し;
(b)ゾルのpHを、セリアのコロイド粒子の等電点よりもジルコニアのコロイド粒子の等電点に近づけて、特にジルコニアのコロイド粒子の等電点±1.0、より特に等電点±0.5のpHの範囲内まで近づけて、ジルコニアのコロイド粒子を凝集させ;
(c)ゾルのpHを、セリアのコロイド粒子の等電点に近づけて、特にセリアのコロイド粒子の等電点±1.0、より特に等電点±0.5のpHの範囲内まで近づけて、凝集したジルコニアのコロイド粒子の周囲に、セリアのコロイド粒子を凝集させ、そして;
(d)得られた凝集物を乾燥及び焼成すること。
この方法では、始めに、それぞれ異なる等電点を有するジルコニアのコロイド粒子とセリアのコロイド粒子とを少なくとも含有するゾルを提供する。
この方法では、次に、ゾルのpHを、セリアのコロイド粒子の等電点よりもジルコニアのコロイド粒子の等電点に近づけて、ジルコニアのコロイド粒子を凝集させる。

上記のようにして得られる凝集体を乾燥及び焼成することによって、本発明の触媒担体粉末が得られる。
下記の特性を有する白金担持セリア(CeO2)−ジルコニア(ZrO2)−イットリア(Y2O3)複合酸化物触媒を提供した。
組成比: CeO2:ZrO2:Y2O3=60:36:4(重量比)
表面セリアモル分率: 63.7mol%
初期比表面積: 55.1m2/g
アルカリ安定化ジルコニアゾル水溶液、酸性安定化セリアゾル水溶液、イットリアゾル水溶液をそれぞれ所定量混合し、酸性の混合ゾルを得て、ジルコニアのコロイド粒子を凝集させた。その後、この混合ゾルに、pHが10になるまでアンモニア(NH3)水を添加して、凝集したジルコニア粒子にセリアのコロイド粒子を凝集させた。その後、120℃で24時間にわたって乾燥し、乾燥物を700℃で5時間にわたって焼成した。このようにして得られた酸化物粉末を、質量にして6倍の蒸留水に分散させ、白金が酸化物粉末の1質量%になるようにして、4.4質量%ジニトロジアンミン白金溶液を添加し、1時間にわたって撹拌した。更に、120℃で水分を乾燥し、500℃で2時間にわたって乾燥した。
実施例1の製造方法を基準にしてゾルのpHの変動させ方を変更して、実施例2及び3並びに比較例1〜3の触媒担体粉末を得た。このようにして得られた担体粉末に、実施例1と同様にして白金を担持させた。これらの実施例及び比較例の担体粉末の組成比は実施例1と同じであった。表面セリアモル分率、原料セリアモル分率及び初期比表面積については、表2に示す。
下記に示す従来の共沈法によって触媒を製造した。
蒸留水に硝酸IIアンモニウムセリウム、オキシ硝酸ジルコニウム及び硝酸イットリウムを所定量混合し、撹拌して溶解させた。この溶液にpHが9になるまでアンモニア水を添加して共沈法によって沈殿を生じさせた。この溶液を120℃で24時間にわたって乾燥し、乾燥物を700℃で5時間にわたって焼成した。このようにして得られた酸化物粉末に、実施例1と同様にして白金を担持させた。表面セリア濃度、原料セリア濃度及び初期比表面積については、表2に示す。この表1で示されるように、従来の共沈法によって得られる担体では、表面Ce濃度/原料Ce濃度の比が1.0よりもかなり小さく、ここでは約0.7となっている。
実施例1の製造方法を基準にしてゾルのpHの変動させ方を変更して、実施例4並びに比較例5及び6の触媒担体粉末を得た。但し、ここでは、原料の組成比を変更するとことによって、担体粉末の組成比をCeO2:ZrO2:Y2O3=40:56:4(重量比)とした。このようにして得られた担体粉末に、実施例1と同様にして白金を担持させた。表面セリアモル分率、原料セリアモル分率及び初期比表面積については、表2に示す。
実施例1の製造方法を基準にしてゾルのpHの変動させ方を変更して、実施例5及び比較例7の触媒担体粉末を得た。但し、ここでは、原料の組成比を変更するとことによって、担体粉末の組成比をCeO2:ZrO2:Y2O3=70:26:4(重量比)とした。このようにして得られた担体粉末に、実施例1と同様にして白金を担持させた。表面セリアモル分率、原料セリアモル分率及び初期比表面積については、表2に示す。

窒素吸着によるBET一点法を用いて測定した。

X線光電子分光法(XPS)によって測定した。ここでは、アルバックファイ製PHI−5800を使用した。

表1に示すリッチガス及びリーンガスを1分毎に切り替えて、1000℃で5時間にわたって行った。
−80℃での一酸化炭素パルス吸着法で測定した。
尚、触媒の活性評価用には、白金担持触媒を1mm角のペレット状に成型して用いた。

Claims (4)
- セリア及びジルコニアを含有する触媒担体粉末であって、原料中のセリアのモル分率(mol%)に対するX線光電子分光法で測定される担体粉末表面のセリアのモル分率(mol%)の比が1.2〜1.5である、触媒担体粉末。
- セリア及びジルコニアの合計に対するセリアの含有率が、30〜65mol%である、請求項1に記載の触媒担体粉末。
- アルカリ金属、アルカリ土類金属及び希土類からなる群より選択される少なくとも1種の金属の酸化物を更に含む、請求項1又は2に記載の触媒担体粉末。
- 請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載の触媒担体粉末に白金が担持されてなる、排ガス浄化触媒。
