Claims (4)
- 両面表示可能な表示装置であって、対向する一対の透明基板間には、透明電極間に発光層を有したEL素子が備えられ、該EL素子の外側には透過型偏光板により構成された一対の偏光部材が備えられ、前記一対の偏光部材は、該一対の偏光部材間を外光が透過しない消光位となるように互いの偏光軸の向きが設定されており、
前記一対の偏光部材の一方の側から出射される光の偏光成分と、前記一対の偏光部材の他方の側から出射される光の偏光成分が異なっており、
いずれか一方の前記偏光部材と前記EL素子との間に、透過する光の偏光方向を可変する透過偏光軸可変手段をさらに有し、
前記透過偏光軸可変手段は、電界によって透過する光の偏光方向を回転させる電気光学素子によって構成され、遮光状態から透過状態との間を連続的に切り替え、背景の濃淡を連続的に調整可能とし、
前記EL素子の少なくとも一方の外側に、当該表示装置を観察する観察者を検知する検知部と、前記検知部によって検知された前記一方の外側の発光面を表側として方向性のある像を表示するように前記透明電極に供給する電流を切り替える駆動部とをさらに有することを特徴とする表示装置。 - 前記電気光学素子は液晶素子であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記駆動部は、前記検知部によって前記表示装置の両側の面で観察者を同時に検知した場合には、予め設定された面を表側として前記像を表示させることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。
- 請求項1〜3のいずれか1つに記載の表示装置を備えたことを特徴とする電子機器。
