【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、クライアント/サーバ・コンピュータ・ネットワーキングの分野に関する。より具体的には、本発明は、コンピュータ・ネットワーク内のクライアントとサーバとの間の通信を可能にするための方法および装置に関する。

【従来の技術】
パーソナル・コンピュータを使用する家庭や企業の数は、近年、大幅に増加している。このような増加とともに、インターネットの使用、特にワールドワイド・ウェブ(「ウェブ」)の使用が急増している。ウェブとは、インターネットによって論理的に接続された世界中の多数のコンピュータ上に位置する、定様式ハイパーテキスト・ページの集合である。ネットワーク技術、特にウェブへのユーザ・インタフェースを可能にするためのソフトウェア(「ウェブ・ブラウザ」)の進歩により、ウェブは全体の大部分にアクセス可能になった。しかし、ウェブの開発と使用の拡大にもかかわらず、多くの人は依然としてこの重要な資源を利用することができない。

これまでウェブへのアクセスは、たいてい、パーソナル・コンピュータにアクセスできる人に限られていた。しかし、多くの人は比較的安価なパーソナル・コンピュータの費用でさえ負担する余裕がなく、ウェブにアクセスするのに必要な基本的なコンピュータ技能を学習できないか、学習する気になれない人もいる。さらに、一般に先行技術のウェブ・ブラウザは、一部の人が必要とする程度の使い易さを提供せず、多くのコンピュータ初心者はソフトウェアの使い方を覚えるための根気がない。したがって、パーソナル・コンピュータを使用せずにウェブにアクセスできるようにするための安価な手段を提供することが望ましいはずである。特に、複雑なコンピュータ・ネットワークを使用しているのではなく、単にテレビのチャンネルを変えているかのように感じられるように、通常のテレビ・セットと遠隔制御装置を使用してウェブ・ページにアクセスできることが望ましいはずである。

コンピュータ・システム同士は、標準の電話回線(「POTS(単純旧式電話サービス)」とも呼ぶ)を使用して長距離を越えて互いにデータをやりとりする場合が多い。しかし、コンピュータ自体は、専用の電話回線を備えていない場合が多い。むしろ、コンピュータは、標準の電話音声通信にも使用する電話回線を使用する場合が多い。このような電話回線の2重使用はコンピュータの問題を発生する可能性がある。たとえば、従来の電話サービスの多くは、その回線上に別の着信があるときに通話に係わる人に通知する「通話中着信サービス」という機能を有する。一般に、新しい呼出しを受信した人は、通話中着信サービス信号が発生する可聴音によって通知を受ける。これに対する応答として、その人はすでに進行中の呼出しを切断せずにもう一方の呼出しに切り替える(場合によっては「フラッシュ」と呼ばれる技法)か、または単に新しい呼出しを無視することができる。しかし、コンピュータがその回線を使用している間に通話中着信サービス信号が受信された場合、その信号によってデータ通信が激しく混乱する可能性がある。

一部の通信ソフトウェアは通話中着信サービス信号を使用不可にする能力を与えるが、このようにすると、コンピュータのユーザに対して電話で連絡しようとしているときに一般にそのユーザにはそれを知る方法がないという欠点がある。このため、特にウェブをブラウズしているときに、通話中着信サービス機能を使用不可にせずに激しい混乱を回避することが望ましいはずである。

モデム通信中に通話中着信サービスに対応する先行技術のシステムは、クライアント間通信でのみこれを実行し、通話中着信サービス割込みを処理するようにクライアントとモデムの両方がプログラミングされている場合だけを処理していた。このようなシステムの例としては、Phylon, Inc.(Fremont, California)設計の音声/データ・モデムや、Catapult Entertainment(Cupertino, California)設計のデータ専用モデムがある。どちらの製品もモデムによるビデオ・ゲーム用に設計されており、どちらも割込みを検出し、もう一方のクライアントにその状態を通知し、両方のクライアントが電話接続を終了して着信に応答できるようにすることにより、通話中着信サービス割込みを処理する。呼出しが完了すると、一方のモデムがもう一方のモデムにダイヤルし、ゲームを再開する。

この2つのシステムは、もっと難しい状態は処理しない。サーバ・モデムにダイヤルされる通話中着信サービス割込みを処理するように設計されているのはクライアント・モデムである。たとえば、このようなクライアント・モデムは、インターネット・アクセスを可能にするようなモデム・プールにダイヤルすることができるが、これは従来のモデムを使用して設計されているものである。このような従来のモデムは、通話中着信サービスによって定期的に割り込まれることがない電話接続によりダイヤルアップが行われると想定して設計されているので、先行技術のビデオ・ゲーム・モデムが通話中着信サービス割込み後に円滑に接続を再開できるようにする通知および再接続プロトコルをサポートしていない。

データ通信における割込みは、基本的にWebTVTMクライアント1により休止条件として扱われる。具体的には、通話中着信サービス信号を含むデータ通信における割込みに対する応答として、クライアント1は自動的にモデム・プール2から切断され、ユーザのブラウズ状態を維持しながら後で自動的にモデム・プール2に再接続する。次に図5を参照すると、WebTVTMクライアント1がWebTVTMサーバ5(または他のサーバ)と接触している間にこのクライアント1により通信の割込みが検出された場合(ステップ501)、クライアント1は、現行ブラウズ状況を記述する情報をメモリ(RAM)23に保管する(ステップ502)。保管した情報は、ユーザがブラウズしていたウェブ・サイトを正確に特定し、ユーザからの追加入力なしに後でそのロケーションに自動的に戻るのに必要なすべての情報を含んでいる。状況情報が保管されると、クライアント1は自動的にモデム・プール2から切断される(ステップ503)。次にクライアント1は、所定の時間間隔T1 (たとえば、10秒間)の間、待つ(ステップ504)。時間間隔T1 が時間切れになると、クライアント1は、電話回線29上のリング信号を検出しようと試みることにより、着信が依然として受信されているかどうかを判定する(ステップ505)。リング信号の検出は、第三者がコールインしようとしていることを意味するはずである。というのは、通話中着信サービス信号後のオンフック状態は、それがリング信号を伝送するはずであることを電話会社の電話局の交換機に指示するものであるからである。さらにクライアント1は、すべての内線電話機がオンフック状態(すなわち、非活動状態またはクローズ状態)になっているかどうかを判定する(ステップ506)。この判定は、電話回線29上のインピーダンスを感知することによって行われる。リング信号が一切検出されず、すべての内線電話機がオンフック状態になっている場合、クライアント1は自動的にモデム・プール2にリダイヤルし、前に保管した状況情報に基づいて前のブラウズ状態を再開する(ステップ507)。しかし、リング信号が検出されるかまたは内線電話機がオフフック状態(活動状態)になっている場合(たとえば、家族の誰かが内線電話機を取り上げ、ダイヤルを開始した場合)、クライアント1は、モデム・プール2への接続を再確立する前にその状況が該当しなくなるまで待つ。したがって、混乱が通話中着信サービス割込みであるか、他の人が発信しようとしていることによる混乱であるかにかかわらず、同じメカニズムが正常にその状況を処理する。

前述のように、家庭15に提供される電話サービスは発信者電話番号通知サービスを含むものと想定されている。しかし、発信者電話番号通知サービスは本発明の通話中着信サービス機能をサポートするために不可欠ではないことに留意されたい。本発明では、着信の発信元を識別する情報をユーザに提供するために発信者電話番号通知サービスを利用する。次に図6を参照し、ユーザがウェブをブラウズしている間に着信電話を受け取ったと想定する。したがって、クライアント1は、ブラウズ状況情報を保管した後にモデム・プール2から切断される。次にクライアント1により、着信を受信したことを示すメッセージがテレビ・セット12上でユーザに対して表示される(ステップ601)。次にクライアントは発信者電話番号通知サービス情報を待つ。この情報は通常、第1のリング信号と第2のリング信号との間に受信される(ステップ601)。第2のリング信号の前など、事前設定期間が時間切れになる前に発信者電話番号通知サービス情報を受け取った場合(ステップ602)、クライアント1は、着信の電話番号が対応する名前とともにメモリ23に事前に格納されているかどうかを判定する(ステップ603)。格納されている場合、着信の発信元に対応する名前がメモリ23から取り出され、通話中着信サービス・メッセージとともにユーザに表示される(ステップ604)。発信者電話番号通知サービス情報を一切受信していない場合または着信電話番号に対応する名前がメモリ23に格納されていない場合、発信者の名前が不明であることを示すメッセージがユーザに対して表示される(ステップ608)。所定のリング回数内に電話機10の1台を取り上げることにより、ユーザが着信を受け入れた場合、このルーチンは終了する(ステップ605)。しかし、ユーザが呼出しを受け入れない場合、クライアント1は自動的にその呼出しに応答する。具体的には、クライアント1は記録済みの挨拶を発信者に対して再生し(ステップ606)、発信者が残しておきたいと思ったメッセージをディジタル方式で記録する(ステップ607)。発信者が残したメッセージは、音声出力用のテレビ・セット12のスピーカを使用して、それが記録されたときにリアルタイムでクライアント1のユーザにも再生される。

- 第1処理システムに接続された電話回線を含む通信リンクを介して第2処理システムとの通信中に前記第1処理システムによって検出された混乱に応答する方法であって、
前記第1処理システムが前記通信リンクの電話回線を介して前記第2処理システムに接続されている間の通信に生じた混乱を検出するステップであって、前記混乱が通話中着信サービスの信号によって引き起こされるか、または前記電話回線の内線電話機の一つまたは複数を使用して発呼しようとすることによって引き起こされる、前記検出するステップと、
その混乱に応答して前記第2処理システムとの接続を中止するステップと、
入ってくるリング信号がなくなった時を決定するため、および前記電話回線に関連する全ての内線電話機がオンフックであることを決定するために前記電話回線を監視するステップと、
入ってくるリング信号がないとき、および内線電話機がいずれもオンフックであるときに、前記第2処理システムに前記通信リンクの電話回線を介して自動的に再接続するステップと
