【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は一般的にコンピュータ・
システム・ユーザ・インタフェースに関し、更に詳細に
は、ウィンドウ・タイトル・バー、コマンド・バー、ス
クロール・バーがアイコンにより置換されたコンピュー
タ・システム・ユーザ・インタフェースに関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】現在存在するオペレーティングシステム
は、数多くのコンピュータ・アプリケーションにコンピ
ュータ表示画面を共用させている。この共用はアプリケ
ーションが全表示画面ではなく、ウィンドウと呼ばれる
表示画面の一部分と対話することで可能となる。アプリ
ケーションではなく、コンピュータ・ユーザがウィンド
ウの大きさや配置を制御する。
【０００３】ウィンドウの基本的構成要素は、タイトル
・バー、ウィンドウ・ボーダー、アクション・バー、ス
クロール・バー及びクライアント・エリアである。タイ
トル・バーはウィンドウタイトルを通じてユーザにウィ
ンドウを識別し、またユーザがウィンドウを移動する際
の視覚上の印としても機能する。ウィンドウ・タイトル
・バーは典型的にはシステム・メニュー・アイコン、ウ
ィンドウのタイトル、そしてウィンドウ・サイズ・アイ
コンを含んでいる。
【０００４】アクション・バーはアプリケーションの動
作をアクセスするウィンドウ・エリアであり、通常タイ
トル・バーの真下に位置する。スクロール・バーはユー
ザに対し、視覚的に、更に詳細な情報や、表示されてい
ない情報をマウスや他の指示装置を利用してスクロール
させることにより提供する。ウィンドウ・ボーダーの内
側の残りのエリアはクライアント・エリアである。クラ
イアント・エリアはユーザ目的の焦点であり、この領域
においてユーザは作業を達成する。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】しかしながら、現状存
在するウィンドウにはいくつかの欠点がある。様々なバ
ーは実際の表示画面の相当部分を占有し、こうしてバー
により占有された領域はクライアント・エリアを減少さ
せている。ユーザはクライアント・エリアで作業を行う
ために、作業域が限定される。バーにより利用となる情
報やアクションは便利であるが、一方でそれらが常時必
要な訳ではない。大抵の時間は、バーは単にウィンドウ
を乱しているに過ぎない。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明では、ウィンドウ
・タイトル・バー、アクション・バー、スクロール・バ
ーがアイコン或いは他の小さな視覚的なハンドルまたは
タブにより置換される。ウィンドウ・アイコンは対象ま
たはアプリケーション・ウィンドウの上部にデフォルト
として置かれる。しかしながら、ユーザはウィンドウ・
アイコンをウィンドウ・ボーダーまたはフレームに沿う
任意の場所に置くことも可能である。複数のウィンドウ
が表示画面上に積まれると、ウィンドウ・アイコンがこ
れらがユーザに見えるように、また選択可能なように配
置される。必要な場合には、ユーザはタイトルブロック
またはコンテキスト・メニューをウィンドウ・アイコン
の近傍に表示しても良い。

【実施例】図１に従来のウィンドウ１１を示す。ウィン
ドウ１１は、ウィンドウの境界であるボーダー或いはフ
レーム１３を有している。ボーダー１３内には、タイト
ル・バー１５、アクション・バー１７、スクロール・バ
ー１９と２１がある。ウィンドウ１１の残りの部分はク
ライアント・エリア２３であり、スプレッドシート・ア
イコン２５やカレンダ・アイコン２７を含む複数の・ア
イコンで満たされている。
【０００８】タイトル・バー１５はウィンドウを識別す
るタイトル・ウィンドウ２９、システム・メニュー・ア
イコン３１、ウィンドウ・サイズ・アイコン３３を含ん
でいる。システム・メニュー・アイコン３１は、ユーザ
がウィンドウ上で達成できるアクションを含むプルダウ
ン・メニューを表示する。そうしたアクションはウィン
ドウ自身に関係するものであり、ウィンドウ内に表示さ
れるアプリケーションには関係しない。例えば、アクシ
ョンはユーザに画面上でウィンドウを位置変更させるＭ
ＯＶＥ、ウィンドウをアイコンに縮小させるＭＩＮＩＭ
ＩＺＥ、ウィンドウを画面サイズに拡大するＭＡＸＩＭ
ＩＺＥなどを含む。
【０００９】ウィンドウ・サイズ・アイコン３３は、マ
ウスや指示装置を利用してＭＡＸＩＭＩＺＥやＭＩＮＩ
ＭＩＺＥのシステム・メニューを選択する早い方法を提
供する。
【００１０】アクション・バー１７はウィンドウ内に示
されるアプリケーションのアクションリストを含んでい
る。アクション・バー内リストの各アクションは、アク
ション・バー１７内にリストされた各一般的アクション
内に含まれる個々のアクションをリストするプルダウン
・メニューと関係する。例えば、ＦＩＬＥのプルダウン
は、ユーザにファイルを全体的に操作するアクションを
通じて作業させる。ＦＩＬＥアクション内の個々のアク
ションは、ユーザに新たなファイルを作成させるＮＥ
Ｗ、存在するファイルを記憶装置に書き込むＳＡＶＥを
含んでいる。
【００１１】スクロール・バー１９と２１はユーザがウ
ィンドウを移動して、ボーダー１３の外側にあるデータ
を見たいときに使用する。ウィンドウはサイズ変更可能
であるが、データは通常そうではない。従って、ディメ
ンションとウィンドウが変更されると、あるデータは見
ることができなくなる場合がある。スクロール・バーは
ユーザがウィンドウ外のデータを見る場合に有効であ
る。
【００１２】図２では、本発明によるウィンドウ３５が
示されている。ウィンドウ３５は単にクライアント・エ
リア３９を囲むボーダー３７により構成されている。ボ
ーダー３７はウィンドウ・アイコン４３を含んだタブ４
１に接している。ウィンドウ・アイコン４３はウィンド
ウ３５をＷＯＲＫＰＬＡＣＥウィンドウとして識別す
る。クライアント・エリア３９は図１に示すものと同様
なアイコンで埋められている。
【００１３】ウィンドウ・アイコン４３を含むタブ４１
はデフォルトではウィンドウ３５の上部中央に位置して
いる。しかしながら、図３ではユーザはタブ４１をボー
ダー３７上の任意の位置に配置変更している。タブ４１
を配置変更することにより、ウィンドウ・アイコン４３
はウィンドウがウィンドウ３５上に積み重ねられた場合
でも画面上でみることが可能となり、ユーザはウィンド
ウ３５を容易に見い出し、アクセスすることができる。
【００１４】本発明では、タイトル・バーとアクション
・バーは除外されているが、これらのバーにより得られ
る情報はユーザ要求により使用可能となる。例えば、タ
イトル・バー４５は図５に示すように、タブ４１をマウ
ス駆動ポインタ４７により指示することにより簡単に表
示することができる。タブ４１を指示し、マウスボタン
の一つをクリックすることで、ユーザは図６に示すよう
にアクション・バー１７内にリストされたコンテキスト
・メニュー４９を表示できる。
【００１５】図４に示されるように、複数ウィンドウが
積み重ねられると、タブは他のウィンドウにより覆われ
てしまうウィンドウの配置決め及び識別を促進するイン
デックスタブを形成する。図４及び図５では、ワークプ
レース・ウィンドウ３５はカレンダ・ウィンドウ５１、
スプレッドシート・ウィンドウ５３、インバスケット・
ウィンドウ５５を覆っている。例えば、スプレッドシー
ト・アプリケーションで作業する場合には、ユーザはス
プレッドシートタブ５７を指示し、マウスボタンの一つ
をクリックすれば良い。そうすることにより、スプレッ
ドシート・ウィンドウ５３がワークプレース・ウィンド
ウ３５と置き換わり、重畳したウィンドウの最前部に現
れる。本発明によれば、タブは常時見えるようにウィン
ドウの上部に沿って自動的に配列される。
【００１６】図７は、本発明がユーザに、タブ内にアイ
コンを作成させた様子を示すものである。例えば、ユー
ザはタブ５９内のスプレッドシート・アイコンに円を追
加することができ、タブ６１内の四角形とスプレッドシ
ート・アイコンの場合と区別することができる。本発明
では、ユーザがウィンドウをソートするルーチンを含ん
でいる。例えば、図７に示すように、円の場合のアイコ
ン・ウィンドウを四角形の場合のアイコン・ウィンドウ
と互いに区別することができる。
【００１７】図８から図１０は本発明のソフトウェア実
施例のフローチャートを示す。まず図８では、プログラ
ムがブロック６３で選択される。選択後、ブロック６５
に於いて当該プログラム及びアドレスポインタがロード
され、記憶装置がオープンされる。次に、ブロック６７
に於いて、ウインド・フレームが生成される。ウインド
・フレームが生成された後に、ブロック６９に於いて当
該プログラムのウィンドウ・アイコンが選択され、ブロ
ック７１に於いてウインド・フレームに付加される。次
に、ウィンドウのためのデータがブロック７３でロード
され、マウスポインタがブロック７５でフェッチされ
る。そして、前記データとマウスポインタがブロック７
７でウィンドウに表示される。
【００１８】図９では、ウィンドウが生成され、データ
がウィンドウ内に表示された後に、ブロック７９で入力
がモニタされる。判断ブロック８１では、ユーザがウィ
ンドウ・コンテキスト・メニューを表示したい場合に
は、メニュー内容がブロック８３でフェッチされる。メ
ニュー内容のフェッチ後、該メニューはブロック８５で
生成され、ブロック８７でウィンドウ上にオーバーレイ
される。次にメニュー及びウィンドウはブロック８９で
表示され、同時にプログラムはブロック７９に戻り、入
力のモニタを継続する。
【００１９】判断ブロック９１に於いて、もしオペレー
タがウィンドウ・アイコン・タイトルを表示したい場合
には、プログラムはブロック９３でアイコン・タイトル
をフェッチし、ブロック９５でタイトルペインを形成す
る。次に、ブロック９９でタイトルペインとアイコン及
びウィンドウがブロック９９で表示される。同時に、プ
ログラムはブロック７９に戻り再度入力を監視する。
【００２０】判断ブロック１０１では、オペレータがウ
ィンドウの再配列を望んだ場合に、ウィンドウ表示バッ
ファがブロック１０３でフェッチされ、ウィンドウはブ
ロック１０５でソート・アルゴリズムに従って再配列さ
れる。次に、ウィンドウ・レイアウトがブロック１０７
で最適化され、ウィンドウはブロック１０９で新たな順
序で再表示される。同時に、プログラムはブロック７９
に戻り、入力の監視を継続する。判断ブロック１１１で
は、オペレータがウィンドウ・アイコンの位置調整を望
んだ場合に、ウィンドウ表示バッファがブロック１１３
でフェッチされ、旧ウィンドウ・アイコンはブロック１
１５で消去される。次に、ブロック１１７で第１ウィン
ドウのウィンドウ・アイコンが位置決めされ、表示され
る。もし判断ブロック１１９で、ウィンドウが最終のウ
ィンドウではないと判断されると、ブロック１２１で次
のアイコンが次のウィンドウ上に位置決めされ表示され
る。このようにしてプログラムは、最後のアイコンが最
終ウィンドウ上に位置決めされ表示されるまでループ状
態で判断ブロック１１９に戻り、その後ブロック７９に
戻り入力をモニタする。
【００２１】図１０では、判断ブロック１２３に於い
て、オペレータがウィンドウ・アイコンの位置を変更し
ようとした場合に、ウィンドウ表示バッファがブロック
１２５でフェッチされ、旧ウィンドウ・アイコンはブロ
ック１２７で消去される。次に、ブロック１２９で新ウ
ィンドウ・アイコンが新たな位置に形成される。新ウィ
ンドウ・アイコンが表示された後、ブロック１３１で更
新されたウィンドウが再表示され、プログラムはブロッ
ク７９へ戻り入力モニタを継続する。オペレータがウィ
ンドウをドラッグしようとした場合には、再度判断ブロ
ック１３３にて、ブロック１３５でウィンドウ表示バッ
ファがフェッチされる。プログラムはブロック１３７に
てウィンドウ・ドロップ・ポイントをモニタし、ドロッ
プ・ポイントに達すると、旧ウィンドウが消去され、新
ウィンドウがブロック１３９で表示される。ウィンドウ
がドロップした後、プログラムはブロック７９に戻り、
入力モニタを継続する。
【００２２】もし、オペレータがアイコンを追加しよう
と望めば、判断ブロック１４１に於いて、ウィンドウ表
示バッファがブロック１４３でフェッチされ、旧アイコ
ンとタブがブロック１４５で消去される。次に、ブロッ
ク１４７にて、追加されたアイコンがフェッチされ、旧
アイコンと新アイコンよりなる結合アイコンがブロック
１４９で形成される。次に、ブロック１５１で新アイコ
ン・タブが形成され、ブロック１５３でウィンドウ表示
バッファが新アイコン・タブにより更新される。最後
に、更新されたウィンドウがブロック１５５で再表示さ
れ、同時にプログラムはブロック７９に戻り、入力モニ
タを継続する。
【００２３】一般的にブロック１５７では、関係技術者
に於いては理解されるように、例えば最大化や最小化な
どの他の通常のウィンドウ情報が達成される。

【発明の効果】以上説明したように、本発明によれば、
ウィンドウ情報の提供、ウィンドウ機能アクセスに於け
る類の無いシステム及び方法が提供でき、かつ追加的な
ウィンドウ構成能力を提供できる。その結果ユーザにと
っては、コンピュータ画面上の視覚的な煩雑さを軽減
し、データ表示のためのスペースを広げ、機能アップを
実現できるものである。
