Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 技術分野 本発明は、光ファイバあるいは導波路内に位相格子を
形成,印刷あるいは書込む技術に係り、また該位相格子
へ供給される複数の波長の光を用いたひずみ分布の光学
的検出及び測定に関する。
発明の背景 アプライドオプティクス第21巻(1982)3059−3060ペ
ージ記載のエス・ケー・ヤオ他による技術より、光ファ
イバセンサを用いて長さ方向に沿って軸方向のひずみ又
は温度の分布を測定することが知られている。この技術
によれば、光コア及びそのクラッディング間の境界にお
ける非常に小さな変形によりコアモードからクラッディ
ングモードへ結合する測定可能な程度の光が発生する。
これにより、透過損失及び加えられた擾乱の分布を決め
る時間領域反射測定,又は一連のクラッディングタップ
による測定が可能となる。
発明の開示 本発明は光導波路のコアに沿って、コアの軸に対して
横方向の強い紫外線ビームを選択された入射角及びその
補該で加えることにより位相格子を形成する方法を提供
する。
図面の簡単な説明 第1図は本発明になる離間的に解析する光ファイバひ
ずみ計の概略図; 第2A図〜第2C図は夫々コアを含む光導波路の選択され
た部分において、ひずみを監視される機械的構造物中の
選択された部位A,B及びCは対応して間幅が異なる格子
パターンを示す部分的概略図; 第3図は光導波路のコアへ入射された広帯域光により
生成される反射光のスペクトル強度を、特定の場所にお
けるひずみを表わすスペクトル線の変位と共に示すグラ
フ; 第4図は光導波路の長さ方向に沿って選択された場所
で間隔が変化する格子パターンを形成する技術を示す概
略図である。
発明の最良な実施態様 第1図は離間的に解析する光ファイバひずみ計13の概
略図を示す。ひずみ計13は入射光の単一又は最低次数モ
ードを透過するよう作用する光導波路15又はファイバを
具備している。
導波路15のコア19としてはゲルマニウムをドープされ
たシリカ又はガラス繊維が好適である。コア15は、可変
2ビーム紫外線(300ナノメートル以下)の干渉パター
ンによる書込みあるいは印刷等により形成された一連の
間隔の異なるブラッグ回折格子16を有する。これらの周
期的な格子16ないし屈折率の変化は強い照射にさらすこ
とで永久的に形成できる。
第2A図〜第2C図はコア19の各部位に対応して波長の異
なる格子16が形成された様子を示す。
選択された各格子16は、構造要素22中の位置に対応し
てコア材料の紫外線吸収帯域内の特定の波長の光を横方
向から照射することにより形成される。これは一次吸収
過程であり、夫々特定の間隔及び波長により特徴付けら
れた格子16はコア19をこれにその軸に対して選択された
余角をもって入射するコヒーレントな2つの共面ビーム
により横側から照射することで形成される。格子の周期
は選択された入射角を変えることにより選択される。こ
のようにしてコア19内の所定の位置に屈折率の永久的な
変化が生じ、選択された波長のコア19内の光に影響を及
ぼす位相格子が効果的に形成される。
第1図に示す如く、光導波路15及びコア19は例えば一
枚の板などよりなる構造要素22の部分に取り付けあるい
は埋め込まれる。コア19はその部位A,B及びC内に特徴
的な周期の屈折率の変化ないし格子16を含む。広帯域光
源33又は波長変化レーザーがレンズ33′を介してコア19
の外部に露出されている端部に焦点を合わせる。ビーム
スプリッタ34により、コア19からの戻りビームは解析の
ため適切な読み出し部又は分光計37へ導かれる。あるい
は、コア19の端部19′より出て行く透過ビームを解析し
てもよい。
ひずみ計13からの反射光強度のスペクトルを第3図に
示す。コア19の端部19′より出て行く補足的な透過スペ
クトルも得られる。スペクトルは夫々中央波長がラムダ
A,ラムダB及びラムダCの3本の狭帯域の出力線を含
む。これらの出力信号は、夫々の部位A,B及びCにおけ
る位相格子16によるブラック反射ないし回折により生ず
る。本実施例では、構造要素22の部位A,B及びCは変形
によりひずんでおり、これにより、ファイバーコアの周
期的に変化する部分に圧縮及び/又は膨張を生ずる。
その結果、これに対応するスペクトル線は第3図に破
線で示す如くに変位する。ここでそれぞれの波長差デル
タラムダA及びデルタラムダCはそれぞれの部位A及び
Cのひずみに比例する。
第4図はファイバーコア19を強い横方向の紫外線照射
に露出することによるコア19の一部位における周期的な
擾乱ないし格子16が形成されることを示す。格子間隔Δ
a及びΔcは入射して干渉するビーム99及びビーム101
の入射角により制御される。図より分る如く、ビーム99
の入射角はコア19の軸について互いに補角(すなわち、
それらの合計角度が180°)になっている。一対の入射
ビーム99は、一本の入射ビーム101の一部分がビームス
プリッタ103を通り、平行な離間して配置された反射器1
05で反射することにより得られる。両反射器105間の距
離を増し、これに対応してビーム101の入射角を変化さ
せることにより、コア19上のビーム99の入射角が制御さ
れる。従って、格子16の縞間隔がコア19の長手方向に任
意に可変され、これにより、ひずみ計13の位置に応じて
ひずみ又は温度を求めることができる。
この技術により、種々の格子間隔を重畳したり共存さ
せたりでき、以下説明する応答が得られる。
構造要素22上、従ってコア19上に生じる外部擾乱に対
する感度は反射波長のブラッグ条件に依存する。特に、
機械的ひずみ又は温度変化による波長の変化率は、以下
の式で表わされる。
d(ラムダi)/ラムダi =(q+α)ΔT+{1+(dn/de)/n}e =8×10-6/℃+8×10-7/マイクロストレイン ここで、qは波長に依存する熱光学係数、 αは膨張計数、 eは軸方向又は縦方向のひずみ、 ラムダiはコア19に沿った部位iの格子で反射される
波長、 nは光導波路の屈折率、 ΔTは温度変化である。
この関係式はファイバセンサの長さ方向に沿う温度変
化に対する補償方法を示唆している。特に、異なる間隔
の重畳された格子を設けた場合、2個の格子の夫々は同
じレベルのひずみを有するようになるが、qが波長に依
存しているので夫々の格子の波長の変化分は異なってく
る。
従って、一対の重畳された格子により一対の反射又は
透過強度のピークが示される。従って温度とひずみの結
合により生じるこれらのピークの変化が減算できる。ひ
ずみによるこれらのピークの変位量は大きさが同じであ
る。従って、減算後に残った変化分は温度に関係したも
のとなる。そこで、温度差が生じている可能性のあるい
くつかの部位間のひずみ差を知りたい場合、温度要因を
補償することが可能になる。
光弾性及び熱光学効果は波長に依存しているため、上
記関係により測定中の温度変化を補償できる。換言すれ
ば、興味のある各場所に2個又はそれ以上の格子を重畳
することにより、各測定点において2又はそれ以上のス
ペクトル線が得られる。ひずみは両方のスペクトル線に
等しく影響を与えるが、温度はそうではない。これによ
り、ひずみ及び温度差の大きさを決める十分な情報が得
られる。
上記説明により、本発明の範囲内において本発明の他
の変形例が容易に考えられる。発明の範囲及び境界は以
下に記載するクレームにより明らかにされる。

Claims (5)

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項1】コアの少なくとも一の格子領域に永久的に
    設けてあり、所定の格子間隔を有する、少なくとも一の
    格子を有する単一のコアを有してなり、 該格子は、紫外線を照射されることによって屈折率が永
    久的に変化する材料のコアに、強力な紫外線光よりなる
    第1及び第2のコヒーレントな共面ビームを、クラッド
    を通して、横向きに該コアの選択された部分に該コアの
    軸に対して選択された入射角及びその補角をもって当て
    ることによって形成されたものであることを特徴とする
    光ファイバ。
  2. 【請求項2】上記コアは、少なくとも一つの追加的格子
    を有し、該追加的格子は、上記一の格子と同様に形成さ
    れ、上記一の格子の格子間隔とは異なる格子間隔を有す
    る構成としたことを特徴とする特許請求の範囲第1項記
    載の光ファイバ。
  3. 【請求項3】上記追加的格子は、該格子領域に設けてあ
    ることを特徴とする特許請求の範囲第2項記載の光ファ
    イバ。
  4. 【請求項4】上記追加的格子は、上記一の格子領域から
    長手方向上離れている追加的格子領域に設けてあること
    を特徴とする特許請求の範囲第2項記載の光ファイバ。
  5. 【請求項5】光ファイバのコア上の選択された領域に周
    期的な屈折率変化を形成する方法であって、 紫外線を照射されることによって屈折率が永久的に変化
    する材料でもってコアを形成し、 該コアの領域を夫々コヒーレント光源からの強力な紫外
    線光照射の下におき、 さらに、該強力な紫外線光よりなる第1及び第2のコヒ
    ーレントな共面ビームを、クラッドを通して、横向きに
    該コアの選択された部分に該コアの軸に対して選択され
    た入射角及びその補角をもって当てる段階よりなること
    を特徴とする方法。
