（発明の背景）
本発明は、双方向媒体アプリケーションに関し、具体的には、一時停止媒体を提供する双方向媒体アプリケーションに関する。
放送テレビ番組、ケーブルテレビ番組、ペイパービュー番組、ビデオオンデマンド（ＶＯＤ）番組、ニアビデオオンデマンド（ＮＶＯＤ）番組、音楽、宣伝材料、および他の種類の媒体などの音声および映像媒体は通常、有線ネットワークまたは無線ネットワークを介して視聴者に配信される。ニアビデオオンデマンドシステムおよびビデオオンデマンドシステムにより、ユーザがほぼオンデマンドでまたはオンデマンドで媒体を視聴することが可能になる。有線ネットワークおよび無線ネットワークは、一方向ケーブルテレビシステムまたは双方向ケーブルテレビシステム、放送テレビシステム、衛星サービスネットワーク（例えば、デジタル放送衛星（ＤＢＳ）システム）、インターネット、または音声および映像媒体を送達する他の任意の適切な手段を含み得る。

パーソナルビデオレコーダシステムにより、媒体が再生されている場合に、ユーザがコマーシャル休憩を早送りすることも可能になる。視聴者の便宜上、コマーシャル休憩無しで、記録された媒体を再生するように設計されたシステムがいくつか存在する。しかし、コマーシャル休憩内の時間スロットに料金を支払う宣伝主などは、自身の宣伝材料を視聴者に届けることを望み得る。
したがって、本発明の一目的は、向上した双方向媒体アプリケーションを提供することである。
本発明のより特定の目的は、媒体が一時停止されている間に、一時停止時間のコンテンツをユーザに提示する双方向媒体アプリケーションを提供することである。
さらに、本発明の一目的は、ユーザが特定の指定媒体を介して早送りすることを妨げる双方向媒体アプリケーションを提供することである。
（発明の要旨）
本発明のこれらの目的および他の目的は、本発明の原理によって、ユーザが再生中の媒体を一時停止した場合に、一時停止時間のコンテンツを表示し得る双方向媒体アプリケーションを提供することによって達成される。

双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザによって現在再生されている媒体に関連してなくともよい一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。例えば、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、例えば、特定の放送チャンネル上でユーザ機器４０に継続的に提供されている一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。このアプローチにおいて、特定の媒体配信設備のすべてのユーザに対して、媒体が一時停止されている間、同じ一時停止時間のコンテンツが再生され得る。

ユーザが一時停止されたリアルタイムの媒体の再生を再開すると、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、図３に示す例示の表示画面３００を表示し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、映画が一時停止された時間点と実質的に同じ時間点から映画「Ｂｒａｖｅｈｅａｒｔ」の再生を再開し得る。画面３００は双方向オーバーレイ３０５も含み得る。双方向オーバーレイ３０５は、ユーザに利用可能な異なるオプションを示し得る。例示するように、ユーザは、遅れた媒体を巻戻し、一時停止、および早送りすることが可能であり得る。一時停止オプション３１０が強調表示されると、ユーザが、例えば、「選択」キーを押した場合に、双方向媒体アプリケーションが媒体を一時停止し得ることが示される。ユーザは、強調表示をナビゲートして、オプションを巻戻しまたは早送りすることも可能であり得る。別の適切なアプローチにおいて、ユーザはユーザ入力デバイス５２上の指定ボタンを押して、他の任意の適切な機能を一時停止したり、早送りしたり、巻戻ししたり、または実行し得る。ユーザが指定ボタンを押すと、選択されたボタンに対応する強調表示が画面３００上に提示されて、どのボタンが選択されたかを示し得る。双方向オーバーレイ３０５は、時間インジゲータ２２５も含み得る。例示するように、時間インジゲータ２２５をグラフィカルフォーマットで表示する。バー３１５は映画全体の長さを示す。現在位置インジゲータ３２０は、映画の現在表示されている点を表す。リアルタイムインジゲータ３２５は、ユーザ機器４０によって現在受信されているリアルタイムの媒体の点を表す。例えば、ユーザが媒体を早送りすると、現在位置インジゲータ３２０はリアルタイムインジゲータ３２５に近づくように移動し得る。現在位置インジゲータ３２０およびリアルタイムインジゲータ３２５が媒体内の同じ点を指す場合、ユーザは、この点を越えて早送りすることを可能にされ得ない。
図４は、ユーザがリアルタイムの媒体を一時停止することを可能にすること、および一時停止時間のコンテンツを再生することに関与し得る例示の工程のフローチャートである。リアルタイムの媒体は、例えば、テレビ番組内容（例えば、放送番組内容、ケーブル番組内容、およびペーパービュー番組内容）、音楽番組内容、または他の任意の適切な種類のリアルタイムの媒体であり得る。工程４１０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、リアルタイムの媒体を一時停止する能力をユーザに提供し得る。リアルタイムの媒体は、「Ｔｈｅ Ｇｒｅａｔｅｓｔ Ｈｉｔｓ ｏｆ Ｐｉｎｋ Ｆｌｏｙｄ」などの音楽番組内容であり得る。例えば、ユーザは、ユーザ入力デバイス５６上の一時停止ボタンを押すことによって、または他の任意の適切な方法によって、音楽番組内容を一時停止し得る。
工程４２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し、そしてリアルタイムの媒体を記録し得る。一時停止時間のコンテンツは、一時停止された媒体に特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツ、またはユーザに特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツなど、任意の適切な一時停止時間のコンテンツであり得る。一時停止時間のコンテンツは、グラフィクス、テキスト、動画、音楽、宣伝、広告、概略、雑学情報、ウェブサイト、または他の任意の適切な媒体などの任意の媒体、あるいは媒体の組み合わせであり得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、媒体に関連付けられた媒体データのコンテンツをモニタリングして、一時停止された媒体に特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツを提供し得る。双方向媒体システムは、「Ｔｈｅ Ｇｒｅａｔｅｓｔ Ｈｉｔｓ ｏｆ Ｐｉｎｋ Ｆｌｏｙｄ」の代わりに、Ｒｏｇｅｒ Ｗａｔｅｒｓとの音声インタビューなどの一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。ユーザがリアルタイムの媒体の再生を再開するまで、この一時停止時間のコンテンツまたは他の任意の一時停止時間のコンテンツが代用され得る。
工程４３０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、リアルタイムの媒体が一時停止された時間点と実質的に同じ時間点でリアルタイムの媒体の再生を再開し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、例えば、一時停止の数秒前に、媒体が一時停止されたその正確な時間的瞬間に、または一時停止の数秒後に、一時停止されたリアルタイムの媒体の再生を再開し得る。ユーザは、例えば、ユーザ入力デバイス５６上または他の任意の適切なデバイス上の一時停止ボタンを再度押して、リアルタイムの媒体の再生を再開し得る。
図４に示す工程は単なる例であり、さらなる工程を加えてもよく、工程のうちの幾つかを省いてもよく、または改変してもよいことを理解されたい。例えば、上述の工程を用いて、ユーザがニアビデオオンデマンド媒体を一時停止することも可能にし得る。
ＮＶＯＤ媒体を一時停止する別の適切なアプローチにおいて、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザが媒体を一時停止した場合にＮＶＯＤ媒体を記録しなくともよい。通常、同じ媒体の番組を一定の間隔で（例えば、５分ごとに）配信するサーバ（例えば、サーバ５８）によってＮＶＯＤ媒体を提供し得る。このようなアプローチにおいて、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザが媒体の再生を再開した場合に、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の後の放映分を再生し得る。
図５は、ユーザがＮＶＯＤ媒体を一時停止することを可能にすること、および一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用することに関与し得る例示の工程のフローチャートである。工程５１０において、ユーザは、現在再生中のＮＶＯＤ媒体を一時停止する能力を提供され得る。
工程５２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の代わりに、一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。一時停止時間のコンテンツは、一時停止された媒体に特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツまたはユーザに特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツなどの任意の適切な一時停止時間のコンテンツであり得る。さらに、一時停止時間のコンテンツは、グラフィクス、テキスト、動画、音楽、宣伝、広告、概略、雑学情報、ウェブサイト、または他の任意の適切な媒体などの任意の媒体、あるいは媒体の組み合わせであり得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ＮＶＯＤ媒体に関連付けられた媒体データのコンテンツをモニタリングして、一時停止された媒体に特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツを提供し得る。ユーザがＮＶＯＤ媒体の再生を再開するまで、一時停止時間のコンテンツが再生され得る。
工程５３０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の後の放映分を再生することによって、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の再生を再開し得る。例えば、ＮＶＯＤ媒体が５分ごとに配信されて、ユーザが３０分間媒体を一時停止した場合、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の６回目に続く放映分を再生することによって、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の再生を再開し得る。
図５に示す工程は単なる例であり、さらなる工程を加えてもよく、工程のうちの幾つかを省いてもよく、または改変してもよいことを理解されたい。例えば、工程５２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションはさらに、ＮＶＯＤ媒体の次の放映分が現在一時停止されているＮＶＯＤ媒体と整合されるまで、どのぐらいの時間が残っているかもユーザに通知し得る。
双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ビデオオンデマンド媒体にアクセスする能力もユーザに提供し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、例えば、クライアント−サーバ構成でＶＯＤ媒体にアクセスし得る。ユーザ機器４０から離れて設けられているＶＯＤサーバ上に（例えば、媒体配信設備３６において）ＶＯＤ媒体を格納してもよい。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、番組ガイド情報を用いて、利用可能なＶＯＤ媒体をユーザに通知し得る。この情報は、ユーザによって双方向番組ガイドを介してアクセスされ得る。ユーザがＶＯＤ媒体を一時停止すると、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ＶＯＤサーバからの媒体の再生を停止して、一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。ユーザがＶＯＤ媒体の再生を再開すると、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、媒体が一時停止された時間点で、ＶＯＤサーバから媒体の再生を再開し得る。
双方向媒体アプリケーションは、記録された媒体と同様の様態で動作し得る。しかし、ユーザ機器４０から離れて設けられたサーバから媒体にアクセスする代わりに、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザ機器４０においてローカルに、記録された媒体にアクセスし得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、例えば、双方向番組ガイドから記録する番組を選択することによって、媒体を記録する能力をユーザに提供し得る。
図６は、ユーザがＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体を一時停止することを可能にすること、および一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用することに関与し得る例示の工程のフローチャートである。工程６１０において、ユーザは、現在再生中のＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体を一時停止する能力を提供され得る。
工程６２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、一時停止されたＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体の代わりに、一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションは、例えば、ユーザ機器４０に特定の放送チャンネル上で継続的に提供される無関係の一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションはさらに、ＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体に関連付けられた媒体データのコンテンツをモニタリングして、一時停止された媒体に関連付けられた一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションはさらに、ユーザ活動をモニタリングして、ユーザに特定の一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用し得る。ユーザがＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体の再生を再開するまで、一時停止時間のコンテンツが再生され得る。
工程６３０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、媒体が一時停止された時間点と実質的に同じ時間点で、ＶＯＤ媒体または記録された媒体の再生を再開し得る。

本発明の別の実施形態において、ユーザは双方向媒体アプリケーションの特定の機能にアクセスすることを阻止され得る。ユーザは、例えば、媒体を巻戻しし、媒体を早送りし、媒体を一時停止し、媒体を記録し、または双方向媒体アプリケーションの他の任意の適切な機能を実行することを禁止され得る。
図７は、ユーザが機能にアクセスすることを阻止することに関与し得る例示の工程のフローチャートである。工程７１０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、機能にアクセスする能力をユーザに提供し得る。例えば、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、早送り機能にアクセスしながら、遅れたリアルタイムの媒体または記録された媒体（例えば、「Ｔｈｅ Ｓｉｍｐｓｏｎｓ」、これは日々記録され得る）を視聴する能力をユーザに提供し得る。
工程７２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、現在視聴されている媒体に関連付けられた媒体データが、ユーザが機能にアクセスすることを阻止しているか否かを判定し得る。例えば、媒体に関連付けられた媒体データは、ユーザが媒体内の特定のコマーシャルを早送りすることを阻止し得る。これは、再生の間に、媒体の特定の部分（例えば、コマーシャル）を視聴者に見させる能力を媒体プロバイダに提供し得る。
媒体データがユーザが機能にアクセスすることを阻止しない場合、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザが工程７３０に表示される機能にアクセスすることを可能にし得る。
あるいは、媒体データがユーザが機能にアクセスすることを阻止する場合、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザが工程７４０に示される機能にアクセスすることを阻止し得る。双方向媒体アプリケーションはさらに、機能が妨げられていることもユーザに通知し得る。
図７に示す工程は単なる例であり、さらなる工程を加えてもよく、工程のうちの幾つかを省いてもよく、または改変してもよいことを理解されたい。
ユーザが機能にアクセスしようとした場合に、双方向媒体アプリケーションによって表示され得る例示の表示画面を図８に示す。図８の画面８００は、ユーザが媒体を早送りしようとした場合に表示され得る。例示するように、ユーザは、「Ｌｅｘｕｓ」のコマーシャルを早送りしようとしている。オーバーレイ８１５を表示して、媒体が早送りされ得ないことをユーザに通知し得る。オーバーレイ８１５は単なる例であり、この機能が妨げられていることを示すために、他の任意の適切なオーバーレイまたは通知をユーザに提示し得る。
図９は、媒体データのコンテンツに基づいて特定のタスクを実行するように双方向媒体アプリケーションに命令することに関与し得る例示の工程のフローチャートである。工程９１０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、ユーザに媒体（例えば、リアルタイム、ＶＯＤ、ＮＶＯＤ）を提示し得る。工程９２０において、双方向媒体アプリケーションは、現在提示されている媒体に関連付けられた媒体データを探して命令を求め、関連付けられた媒体データに含まれる任意の命令を実行し得る。例えば、ユーザがテレビ番組を見ている場合、媒体データは、例えば、開始のシーン、プロット内の重要な移行、リプレイ、またはユーザによって視聴される番組の他の任意の適切な部分を記録するように双方向媒体アプリケーションに命令し得る。
したがって、一時停止時間のコンテンツを提示するシステムおよび方法を提供する。当業者であれば、説明した実施形態以外によって本発明を実施し得、そして実施形態は例示を目的として提示されるのであって本発明を限定せず、そして本発明は上掲の特許請求の範囲によってのみ限定されることを理解する。

Claims (12)

  1. 一時停止されているメディアの代わりに一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用する方法であって、
    前記方法は、
    前記メディアを再生することと、
    ユーザにローカルに、前記メディアのメディアプロバイダを識別することと、
    前記ユーザから一時停止コマンドを受信することと、
    前記一時停止コマンドを受信したことに応答して、前記メディアを一時停止することと、
    前記ユーザにローカルに、前記一時停止時間のコンテンツを表示のために生成することであって、前記一時停止時間のコンテンツは、再生されているメディア以外のメディアコンテンツを含み、前記一時停止時間のコンテンツは、前記一時停止コマンドに続くユーザ入力なしで、前記メディアプロバイダに基づいて選択される、ことと
    を含む、方法。
  2. 前記メディアが再生されている間に前記メディアの部分を記録することと、
    前記記録された部分を編集することにより、前記メディアのビデオ概略を作成することと、
    前記メディアが一時停止されている間に前記ビデオ概略を表示のために生成することと
    をさらに含む、請求項１に記載の方法。
  3. メディアデータを受信したことに応答して、記録されるべき前記メディアの部分を選択することをさらに含む、請求項２に記載の方法。
  4. 前記メディアが再生されている間に特定のタイプの前記メディアの部分を記録することであって、前記特定のタイプは、メディアデータに基づいて選択される、ことと、
    前記特定のタイプの前記記録された部分を編集することにより、前記メディアのビデオ概略を作成することと、
    前記メディアが一時停止されている間に前記ビデオ概略を表示のために生成することと
    をさらに含む、請求項１に記載の方法。
  5. 前記特定のタイプは、テーマ、スポーツリプレイおよびメディアカテゴリーのうちの少なくとも１つである、請求項４に記載の方法。
  6. 一時停止されているメディアの代わりに一時停止時間のコンテンツを代用するインタラクティブメディアシステムであって、
    前記システムは、
    前記メディアを再生する手段と、
    前記メディアのメディアプロバイダを識別する手段と、
    ユーザから一時停止コマンドを受信する手段と、
    前記一時停止コマンドを受信したことに応答して、前記メディアを一時停止する手段と、
    前記一時停止時間のコンテンツを表示のために生成する手段であって、前記一時停止時間のコンテンツは、再生されているメディア以外のメディアコンテンツを含み、前記一時停止時間のコンテンツは、前記一時停止コマンドに続くユーザ入力なしで、前記メディアプロバイダに基づいて選択される、手段と
    を含む、システム。
  7. 前記メディアが再生されている間に前記メディアの部分を記録する手段と、
    前記記録された部分を編集することにより、前記メディアのビデオ概略を作成する手段と、
    前記メディアが一時停止されている間に前記ビデオ概略を再生する手段と
    をさらに含む、請求項６に記載のシステム。
  8. 記録されるべき前記メディアの部分は、メディアデータに基づいて選択される、請求項７に記載のシステム。
  9. 記録されるべき前記メディアの部分は、特定のタイプに基づいて選択される、請求項７に記載のシステム。
  10. 前記特定のタイプは、テーマ、スポーツリプレイおよびメディアカテゴリーのうちの少なくとも１つである、請求項９に記載のシステム。
  11. 前記メディアが再生されるごとに異なるタイプが選択される、請求項１０に記載のシステム。
  12. 前記メディアが一時停止されている間に前記メディアを記録する手段と、
    前記ユーザから再開コマンドを受信する手段と、
    前記再開コマンドを受信したことに応答して、前記メディアが一時停止された点と同一の点で前記メディアを再生する手段と
    をさらに含む、請求項１１に記載のシステム。
