一般に、金属及びその化合物は各々固有の光吸収を示すが、いずれにおいても上記(1)式及び(2)式に示す条件を満たせば、ほぼ可視光域全てにわたって高い反射率を得ることができる。例えばAlの場合、可視光域の最短波長λminを380nmとすれば消光係数kは約4.6であり、膜厚は6nm乃至7nm以上の膜厚とすればよい。

- レリーフ構造を有し、且つ可視光反射率が低い複数の微細レリーフ領域と、
光を反射する複数の鏡面領域と
を備え、
前記各微細レリーフ領域と前記各鏡面領域とが互いに隣接して周期的に設けられることを特徴とする光学素子。 - 前記各微細レリーフ領域及び前記各鏡面領域は、それぞれ、
樹脂層及び金属層を含み、当該樹脂層上に当該金属層が蒸着されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光学素子。 - 互いに隣接した1組の微細レリーフ領域と鏡面領域との幅を示すピッチに応じて、回折格子又は偏光分離素子として機能することを特徴とする請求項1又は請求項2に記載の光学素子。
- 前記ピッチが、0.5μm乃至10μmの範囲内であるときに、回折格子として機能することを特徴とする請求項3に記載の光学素子。
- 前記ピッチが、0.1μm乃至1.0μmの範囲内であるときに、偏光分離素子として機能することを特徴とする請求項3に記載の光学素子。
