Description
ここで、Poutは変調器からの出力電力で、P0は公称出力で、φは2つのアーム(例えば、図1の従来技術のアーム3及び4)間の正味の位相シフトである。結果として、光の出力レベルが、2つのアーム間の正味の位相シフトφの値を変えることによって、制御される。図2は、このような関係のプロットであり、2つのアーム間の位相シフトの関数として出力を示す(「1」の出力が最大出力Poutに関し、「0」の出力が最小出力Poutに関する)。すなわち、変調器の2つのアーム間の位相シフトの差が、建設的干渉(例えば「1」)又は相殺的干渉(例えば「0」)のいずれかを与える。図示又は記載されていないが、実施に際して、このような変調器がDCセクションを用いてアームを光学的にバランスさせ、図2の示す伝達曲線に沿った所望の位置に動作点を設定してもよい。
Claims (8)
- マルチレベルのデータ信号の出力を生成するための光変調器であって、当該変調器が、
連続波(CW)光入力信号を受信するための入力導波路セクションと、
前記入力導波路セクションの出力側に結合され、前記CW光入力信号を1対のCW光入力信号に分配するための入力光分配部と、
前記入力光分配部の出力側に結合され、前記光信号の伝播を補助するための1対の変調アームを形成する1対の光導波路であって、少なくとも一方の変調アームが複数のN個の変調セクションに区切られており、前記複数のN個の変調セクションを組み合わせた長さが、それに沿って伝播する前記連続波光入力信号に完全なπの位相シフトを与えるのに相当するように、各セクションが所定の長さである1対の光導波路と、
N個の複数のドライバ回路であって、各ドライバ回路が前記N個の複数の変調セクションのうちの別々の1の変調セクションに結合され、前記N個の複数のドライバ回路へのデジタル入力の組み合わせが前記変調器によって出力されるマルチレベルの出力データ信号にしたがって決定され、各変調セクションの「オン」又は「オフ」状態が前記入力及び出力信号間の前記位相シフトに寄与するドライバ回路と、
変調した1対の光信号を1の変調した光出力信号に結合するための出力光結合部と、
前記出力光結合部の出力側に結合され、前記変調した光出力信号の伝播を補助するための出力導波路セクションと、
を具えることを特徴とする光変調器。 - 各変調セクションの前記所定の長さが、各出力信号レベルに関して基本的に等しい出力値を出力するよう構成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
- PAM−4のマルチレベルの信号の出力を与えるよう構成され、前記N個の複数の変調セクションが:長さL1の第1のセクションと、長さL2の第2のセクションと、長さL1の第3のセクションと、からなる3つのセクションを具えており、(2L1+L2)から成る組み合わせが、前記変調器の入力側から出力側にπの位相シフトを与えることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
- 前記第2及び第3の変調セクションに関するデジタルの前記ドライバ回路が同じ入力信号を受信すべく連結されるように、DCバランスした符号化スキームを使用することを特徴とする請求項3に記載の光変調器。
- 前記第1及び第2の変調セクションに関するデジタルの前記ドライバ回路が同じ入力信号を受信すべく連結されるように、DCバランスした符号化スキームを使用することを特徴とする請求項3に記載の光変調器。
- 1の変調アームが、異なる長さの複数のセクションを含めるよう形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
- 前記変調器が差動入力信号を使用しており、双方の変調アームが異なる長さの複数のセクションを含めるよう形成されており、各アームの前記セクションが場所及び長さに関して一致していることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
- 前記変調器がSOIベースの変調器を具えていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
