Abstract
【解決手段】本発明の液晶装置100は、液晶層50を挟持する一対の基板10,20を備え、1つのサブ画素領域内に反射表示を行う反射表示領域Rと透過表示を行う透過表示領域Tとが設けられ、前記一対の基板のうちの一方の基板20の反射表示領域Rに対応する領域に位相差層60が設けられ、前記位相差層60は複数の液晶材料の層(第1位相差層62及び第2位相差層64)を配向膜(第1配向膜61、第2配向膜63)を介して積層することにより形成されている。

Description
図1は、本発明の第1実施形態の液晶装置100を構成するマトリクス状に形成された複数のサブ画素の回路構成図である。本実施形態の液晶装置100は、液晶に対して基板面方向の電界(横電界)を作用させ、配向を制御することにより画像表示を行う横電界方式のうち、FFS(Fringe Field Switching)方式と呼ばれる方式を採用した液晶装置である。また、基板上にカラーフィルタを具備したカラー液晶装置であり、R(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)の各色光を出射する3個のサブ画素で1個の画素を構成するものとなっている。したがって、表示を構成する最小単位となる表示領域を「サブ画素領域」と称し、一組(R,G,B)のサブ画素から構成される表示領域を「画素領域」と称する。
そして、スイッチング素子であるTFT30が走査信号G1、G2、…、Gmの入力により一定期間だけオン状態とされることで、データ線6aから供給される画像信号S1、S2、…、Snが所定のタイミングで画素電極9に書き込まれるようになっている。
この場合、透明電極と反射電極とが画素電極9との間に電界を生じさせる共通電極を構成する一方、反射電極は当該サブ画素領域の反射層としても機能する。
図6は、本発明の第2実施形態の液晶装置200の断面構成図である。液晶装置200の基本構成は第1実施形態の液晶装置100と同じである。異なるのは、位相差層65を複屈折の等しい複数の位相差層67,69によって形成した点である。したがって、第1実施形態の液晶装置100と共通する構成要素については同じ符号を付し、詳細な説明は省略する。
図7は、本発明に係る電子機器の一例である携帯電話の概略斜視図である。携帯電話1300は、本発明の液晶装置を小サイズの表示部1301として備え、複数の操作ボタン1302、受話口1303、及び送話口1304を備えて構成されている。これにより、本発明の液晶装置により構成された表示品質に優れる表示部を具備した携帯電話1300を提供することができる。
Claims (10)
- 液晶層を挟持する一対の基板を備え、1つのサブ画素領域内に反射表示を行う反射表示領域と透過表示を行う透過表示領域とが設けられ、前記一対の基板のうちの一方の基板の反射表示領域に対応する領域に位相差層が設けられてなる液晶装置であって、
前記位相差層は複数の液晶材料の層を配向膜を介して積層することにより形成されていることを特徴とする液晶装置。 - 前記位相差層の層厚によって前記反射表示領域における液晶層の層厚が前記透過表示領域における液晶層の層厚よりも小さくなっていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記位相差層は複屈折の異なる複数の液晶材料の層により構成されていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記位相差層は複屈折の等しい複数の液晶材料の層により構成されていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記複数の液晶材料の層の各々の配向方向は互いに平行であることを特徴とする請求項1〜4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記位相差層の位相差は1/2波長であり、前記位相差層の形成された領域の液晶層の位相差は1/4波長であることを特徴とする請求項1〜5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶装置。
- 液晶層を挟持する一対の基板を備え、1つのサブ画素領域内に反射表示を行う反射表示領域と透過表示を行う透過表示領域とが設けられ、前記一対の基板のうちの一方の基板の反射表示領域に対応する領域に複数の液晶材料の層からなる位相差層が設けられてなる液晶装置の製造方法であって、
前記位相差層の形成工程が、
前記一方の基板上に配向膜を形成する第1工程と、
前記配向膜上に液晶材料を塗布する第2工程と、
前記液晶材料を前記配向膜によって配向させつつ硬化する第3工程とを含み、
前記第1工程ないし第3工程を複数回繰り返すことにより、前記複数の液晶材料の層からなる位相差層を形成することを特徴とする液晶装置の製造方法。 - 前記複数の液晶材料の層のうちの少なくとも1つの液晶材料の層は、他の液晶材料の複屈折とは異なる複屈折を持つ液晶材料からなることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶装置の製造方法。
- 前記複数の液晶材料の層は、複屈折が互いに等しい液晶材料からなることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶装置の製造方法。
- 請求項1〜6のいずれか1項に記載の液晶装置を備えたことを特徴とする電子機器。
