Abstract

【課題】サーチエンジンを実現するコンピュータシステムにおいて、ユーザを手助けして発見の向上を図る検索照会方法を提供する。
【解決手段】（ａ）複数のユーザによりサーチエンジンに送信された検索照会と、前記ユーザの照会送信後の行動に関するデータとを処理し、照会ターム相関データを作成するステップであり、該照会ターム相関データが、照会タームが同様の検索照会の中に出現する頻度と、前記照会送信後の行動に基づいて、特定の検索照会がユーザにとっていかに有益であるかとを表しており、（ｂ）ユーザから検索照会を受信するステップであり、前記検索照会が照会タームを含んでおり、（ｃ）前記照会ターム相関データを使って、前記照会タームに関連すると思われる追加用照会タームを複数特定するステップ、そして（ｄ）ユーザに前記複数の追加用照会タームを呈示し、ユーザに検索照会を改善するよう選択してもらうステップを含む。

Description

本発明は、照会処理に関し、より詳細には、検索照会を改善するプロセスを容易にする技術に関する。
インターネットやWorld Wide Webの人気が高まるにつれて、オンライン・ユーザーがサーチエンジンを利用してインターネットを検索し、欲しい情報を手に入れることが一般的になっている。多くのウェブサイトではユーザーが検索をおこなってかなり大きな領域の項目の中から少しの関連項目を特定することが許されている。一例としては、いくつかのウェブインデックスサイトでユーザーは、知られているウェブサイトの中にある特定のウェブサイトを検索することを許されている。同様に、多くのオンライン販売業者、例えば本屋は、ユーザーがその販売業者から購入できる全ての商品の中にある特定の商品を検索することを許している。他のオンラインサービス、例えばLexisＴＭやWestlawＴＭは、ユーザーがさまざまな条項や法廷意見を検索することを許している。
検索をおこなうために、ユーザーはひとつ以上の照会タームを含む照会を送信する。前記照会はまた、明確に、あるいは暗示的に、書籍のタイトル、著者や主題分類などの検索されるレコードフィールドやセグメントを特定してもよい。例えば、オンライン書店のユーザーは、ユーザー自身が書籍のタイトルの中に現れると信じるタームを含む照会を送信するだろう。前記サーチエンジンの照会サーバープログラムが該照会を処理し、該照会のタームと一致するどんな商品も特定する。前記照会サーバープログラムによって特定された一連の商品は「照会結果」として参照される。オンライン書店の例において、照会結果はそのタイトルが照会タームのいくつか、あるいは全てを含む一連の書籍である。ウェブインデックスサイトの例において、照会結果は一連のウェブサイトやドキュメントである。ウェブに基づくインプリメンテーションにおいて、照会結果は一般的に、探し出された項目のハイパーテキストのリストとしてユーザーに対して呈示される。
検索の範囲が広い場合、照会結果は何百、何千、あるいは何百万の項目をも含むかもしれない。もしユーザーがひとつの、あるいは少しの項目を見つけるために検索をおこなっているなら、照会結果の中の項目を注文する従来のやり方では、しばしば求められる項目を照会結果リストの上位に置き損なう。このときユーザーは、探している項目にたどり着くまでに、照会結果の中にある多くの他の項目に目を通すことを要求される。ExciteＴＭやAltaVistaＴＭのようなあるサーチエンジンは、「検索改善」プロセスの一部としてユーザーに関連する照会タームを提案する。これによりユーザーは、ユーザーの意図する要求をより正確に表わすひとつ以上の関連する照会タームを選択することによってさらに照会を改善し、照会結果を狭めることができる。前記関連する照会タームは一般的に照会結果の内容を使って、例えば特定されたドキュメント内の最も頻繁に使われるタームを特定することによって、サーチエンジンによって生成される。例えば、仮にユーザーが「FOOD」というタームに関する照会を送信するとしたら、そのユーザーは照会結果の中で数千もの項目を受け取るだろう。このとき前記サーチエンジンはこれらの項目のいくらか、あるいは全ての内容をたどって調べ、ユーザーに例えば「RESTAURANTS」、「RECIPIES」や「FDA」などの関連する照会タームを呈示し、ユーザーに照会を改善させる。
前記関連する照会タームは通常、照会にタームを加えるためにユーザーが選択的に印またはチェック印をつけることができる、それらに対応するチェックボックスと共にユーザーに呈示される。インプリメンテーションの中には、照会結果のページ上で提供されるドロップダウンメニューにより前記関連する照会タームが二者択一的に呈示され、ユーザーによって選択されるものがある。いずれの場合も、ユーザーは照会に追加タームを加え、それから修正された照会を再び送信することができる。この技術によれば、ユーザーは照会結果を、主として関連項目から成るより扱いやすいものにまで狭めることができる。
関連する照会タームを生成する既存の技術に関するひとつの問題点は、関連タームがしばしば検索改善プロセスにほとんど、あるいは全く意味がないことである。もうひとつの問題点は、照会にひとつ以上の関連タームを加えると、ときどき照会結果がヌルになることである。もうひとつの問題点は、照会結果項目を解析して頻繁に使われるタームを特定するプロセスがかなりのプロセッサの資源を消費し、ユーザーが照会結果を見るまでに待たなければならない時間をかなり増加させ得ることである。既存の技術におけるこれらの欠点や他の欠点は、ユーザーのめざす速く効率的に最も関連の深い項目を特定することを妨げ、ユーザーにフラストレーションを与え得る。
本発明は、関連する照会ターム（「関連ターム」）を生成し表示する検索改善システムと方法を提供することによってこれらの問題や他の問題に対処するものである。
本発明によると、前記関連タームはサーチエンジンへの照会送信履歴に基づいている照会ターム相関データを使って作られる。前記照会ターム相関データ（「相関データ」）は少なくとも特定のタームが過去に同様の照会の中で共に送信された頻度に基づいていることが好ましい。このような照会履歴情報をプロセスに組み込むと、送信された照会タームと共に他のユーザーによって頻繁に使われる関連タームを作りやすく、これらの関連タームが前記検索改善プロセスに役立つ可能性を著しく増大させる。前記関連タームが役立つ可能性をさらに増大させるために、前記相関データは成功した照会結果（少なくともひとつの一致）をもたらした照会送信履歴からのみ作られることが好ましい。また、関連タームの値が増やされる量は照会結果の中で特定された品目に関してユーザーのとるさまざまな種類の選択行動によって増減されてもよい。これらにはユーザーが商品に関する情報をさらに表示したかどうか、ユーザーがその商品に関する追加的情報を見るのにどのくらい時間を費やしたか、ユーザーがその商品に関する追加的情報を見るのにいくつのハイパーリンクを続けたか、ユーザーがその商品を買い物かごに加えたかどうか、およびユーザーが最終的にその商品を購入したかどうかが含まれていてもよい。
本発明の一側面によると、前記相関データは照会送信に応じて関連タームを調べるために使われる相関データ構造（表、データベース等）に格納される。前記データ構造は照会ログファイルを解析するオフラインプロセスを使って作られることが好ましいが、代わりに照会がユーザーから受信されると共にリアルタイムで作成され更新されてもよい。ひとつの実施例において、前記データ構造は最新の照会送信（例えば、照会ログ中の最近M日間のエントリー）から定期的に（例えば、一日一回）再生成され、こうしてユーザーの現在の好みを強く反映している。この結果、サーチエンジンによって提案された関連タームは社会の現在の好みを強く反映している。このように、例えば、オンライン販売業者のサーチエンジンであるという状況では、該サーチエンジンは現在のベストセラー商品に対応する関連タームを提案する傾向にある。
ひとつの好ましい実施の形態において、データ構造内の各エントリーはキーとなるタームとそれに対応する関連タームリストの形をとっている。各関連タームリストは、最も高い頻度でそれぞれのキーとなるタームと共に（同じ照会の中で）過去に出現したことのあるタームを含んでおり、不成功の照会送信(照会結果がヌルとなった照会送信)は無視する。このように、前記データ構造は所定の照会タームに対する関連タームを調べるための効率的な機構を提供する。
送信された照会(「本照会」)を改善するための一連の関連タームを生成するために、初めは本照会中の各タームに対する関連タームリストが相関データ構造から得られる。(複数タームから成る照会の場合のように)このステップにより複数の関連タームリストが作られる場合には、前記関連タームリストはこれら関連タームリスト間の共通部分を取って（すなわち、全てのリストに共通でないタームを削除して）組み合わされることが好ましい。残った関連タームは少なくともひとつの成功した照会送信の中に、本照会のそれぞれのタームと共に、以前に出現したことのあるタームである。このように、項目が検索されるデータベースから削除されていないことを前提として、これらの関連タームのどれでも個々に本照会に加えることができると共に、修正された照会の照会結果がヌルにならないことを保証できる。この特徴を利用して前記関連タームは、ユーザーにひとつの照会送信につきたったひとつの関連タームを加えることを要求するユーザー・インターフェイスを使ってユーザーに呈示されることが好ましい。他の実施の形態では、照会結果が成功することを保証せずに関連タームが選択され、表示される。
前記関連タームは、ドキュメントや相関タームを解析する必要もなく、前もって作られた相関データにより特定されるので、前記関連タームはほとんど、または全く遅れることなく特定されてユーザーに呈示されることができる。
これらの特徴や他の特徴は、以下にまとめられた図に基づいて説明される。これらの図とその関連説明は本発明の実施の形態を説明するためのものであり、発明の範囲を制限するものではない。
図を通して、参照番号は参照される要素間の対応を示すために繰り返し使われる。また、各参照番号の一桁目はその要素が最初に現れた図を示している。
本発明は、関連する照会ターム(「関連ターム」)をユーザーによってサーチエンジンに送信された照会履歴を用いて生成する検索改善システムおよび方法を提供するものである。要約すると、前記システムは、特定のタームが同様の照会の中で以前に共に出現した頻度を表わす照会ターム相関データを作成する。前記システムは、ユーザーによって入力された照会タームと組み合わせて前記照会ターム相関データを使い、照会を改善するために追加用照会タームを推薦する。このような照会履歴情報をプロセスに組み入れると、送信された照会タームと組み合わせて他のユーザーによって頻繁に使われる関連タームを作りやすく、これらの関連タームが検索改善プロセスに役立つ可能性を著しく増大させる。前記関連タームが役立つ可能性をさらに増大させるために、前記相関データは成功した照会結果（少なくともひとつの一致）をもたらした照会送信履歴からのみ作られることが好ましい。
上記実施の形態において、前記照会ターム相関データは最新の照会送信から、例えば照会ログ中の最近M日間のエントリーを使って、定期的に再生成され、こうしてユーザーの現在の好みを強く反映している。その結果、サーチエンジンによって提案される関連タームは、適当な期間中最も頻繁に検索された項目に対応するタームとなりやすい。このように、例えば、オンライン販売業者のサーチエンジンであるという状況では、該サーチエンジンは現在のベストセラー商品に対応する関連タームを提案する傾向にある。ひとつの実施の形態において、関連タームを生成しユーザーに呈示するために使われる技術は、修正された照会の照会結果がヌルにならないことを保証する。
本発明の検索改善方法は、例えばウェブサイト、インターネットサイト、オンラインサービスネットワーク、ドキュメント検索システム、あるいはユーザーに検索機能を提供する他のタイプのコンピュータシステムの一部として実現されてもよい。また、前記方法は、例えば特定されたドキュメントの内容を処理する方法のような、関連タームを提案する他の方法と組み合わされてもよい。
以下、上記検索改善システムのウェブに基づく好ましい実施の形態を図１〜図９に基づいて説明する。なお、説明上、前記システムは、製品のオンラインカタログから商品(例えば、本、CD等)を特定する際、Amazon.com Inc.の顧客を手助けするために使われるサーチエンジンであるものとして説明される。説明を通して、さまざまなAmazon.comのインプリメンテーションに特有の細目に言及しているが、これら細目は本発明の実施の形態を十分に説明するためのものであり、本発明の範囲を限定するものではない。発明の範囲は請求項で明らかにする。
I. ウェブサイトおよびサーチエンジンの概要
図１はAmazon.comウェブサイト１３０を示しており、本発明にかかるサーチエンジンを実現するために使われる構成要素を含んでいる。
インターネットコマース業界では周知のように、Amazon.comウェブサイトは顧客がインターネット１２０を使って検索し、ブラウズし、本のタイトル、音楽のタイトルや他のタイプの項目のオンラインカタログから購入することのできる機能性を備えている。前記カタログは何百万もの項目を含んでいるので、該サイトが項目特定においてユーザーを手助けする有効な機構を提供することが重要である。
図１で示されているように、ウェブサイト１３０は、インターネット１２０を使って、ユーザーのコンピュータ１１０から受信されたユーザーの要求を処理するウェブサーバーアプリケーション１３１（「ウェブサーバー」）を備えている。これらの要求は、製品を求めてオンラインカタログを検索するためにユーザーによって送信された照会を含んでいる。ウェブサーバー１３１は、照会ログ135の中に照会送信を含むユーザーの取引を記録する。図１に示された実施例において、照会ログ135は一連の毎日の照会ログファイル１３５（１）−１３５（M）から成っており、その各々が一日分の取引を示している。
ウェブサイト１３０はまた、文献一覧データベース１３３を検索することにより照会を処理する照会サーバー１３２も備えている。文献一覧データベース１３３はユーザーがウェブサイト１３０を通して購入するかもしれないさまざまな製品に関する情報を含んでいる。この情報は、例えば、書籍のタイトル、著者、出版社、主題説明やISBN(国際標準書籍番号)、および音楽のタイトル、アーティスト、レーベルや音楽分類を含んでいる。各項目に関する情報はフィールド(例えば、「著者」フィールドや「タイトル」フィールド)に入れられており、文献一覧データベース１３３を限定されたフィールドに基づいて検索できる。このサイトはまた、他のものの中にさまざまな製品を示し、説明する製品情報ページを含んでいるHTML（ハイパーテキスト・マークアップ言語）コンテンツのデータベース１３４も含んでいる。
照会サーバー１３２は照会関連テーブル１３７に格納されている照会ターム相関データに基づいて関連タームを特定する関連ターム選択プロセス１３９を含んでいる。図１に示し、以下で説明するように、前記相関表１３７はオフライン表作成プロセス１３６を使ってM個の最も新しい毎日の照会ログファイル１３５（１）−１３５（M）から定期的に作成される。
前記ウェブサーバー１３１、照会サーバー１３２、表作成プロセス１３６およびデータベースソフトは、他のタイプのプラットフォームも使うことができるであろうが、ウェブサイト１３０のひとつ以上のUnixＴＭベースのサーバーやワークステーション(図示せず)上で走る。照会関連テーブル１３７は照会サーバー１３２を実現するために使われるものと同じマシン上のＲＡＭ（ランダム・アクセス・メモリ）中のキャッシュメモリに入れられるのが好ましい。多数のユーザーを収容するために、前記照会サーバー１３２と照会関連テーブル１３７は複数のマシンにわたって複製することができる。検索プロセスの間に呼び出されるウェブサイトの構成要素は、ここでは一括して「サーチエンジン」として言及される。
図２は書籍タイトルを求めて文献一覧データベース１３３を検索するために使うことのできるAmazon.comウェブサイト１３０の書籍検索ページ２００の一般的な形式を示している。ユーザーは音楽タイトルやオンライン販売業者によって売られている他のタイプの製品を特定するために使うことのできる他の検索ページにもアクセスできる。書籍検索ページ２００は、ユーザーがフィールドを限定して書籍タイトルの検索を開始できるようにする著者フィールド２１０、タイトルフィールド２２０、主題フィールド２４０や関連する条件を含んでいる。ユーザーはまず望まれる情報を検索フィールド２１０、２２０、２４０にタイプし、それから適当な検索ボタン２３０、２５０をクリックすることにより検索をおこなうことができる。サーチエンジンに送信されるタームあるいは一連のタームは、ここでは「照会」として言及される。ウェブサイトの他のエリアでは、ユーザーはタームを特定のフィールドに限定することなく照会を送信するように求められる。
ユーザーが書籍検索ページ２００からウェブサイト１３０に照会を送信する場合、前記照会サーバー１３２は、照会内のどんなフィールド限定も考慮に入れて、該照会を文献一覧データベース１３３に適用する。もし照会結果が一品目であるなら、その品目の製品情報ページがユーザーに呈示される。もし照会結果が複数の品目を含むなら、その品目のそれぞれの製品情報ページへのハイパーテキストのリンクを含む照会結果ページを通して、品目のリストがユーザーに呈示される。
複数タームから成る照会に関しては、照会サーバー１３２が効果的論理的にそれら照会タームの論理積をとり、検索をおこなう。例えば、ユーザーが「JAVA」と「PROGRAMMING」というタームをタイトルフィールド２２０に入力する場合、照会サーバー１３２はタイトル中にこれらのタームを両方含む品目全てのリストを検索して返信する。従って、どの照会タームも一致のない場合（ここでは「不一致ターム」と呼ぶ）、その照会の照会結果はヌルになる。ユーザーにヌルの照会結果を呈示すると、ユーザーにかなりのフラストレーションを与えてしまう。この問題を軽減するために、この場合、ユーザーは「ほぼ一致」と思われる品目のリストを呈示されるであろう。ここに説明されているサーチエンジンは論理的に照会タームの論理積をとるけれども、本発明は他の方法で照会を処理するサーチエンジンに適用できることがわかる。
本発明によると、前記サーチエンジンはユーザーの照会に最もよく合う関連タームを選択するために、前記照会関連テーブル１３７に格納されている照会ターム相関データを使用する。前記サーチエンジンはそれから、関連タームをユーザーに呈示し、ユーザーに照会を修正してもらい、関連情報の発見の向上を図る。前記照会ターム相関データは照会ターム間の関係を示し、検索改善プロセスに役立ちそうな照会タームを効果的に予測するために使われる。本発明の別の側面によると、前記照会関連テーブル１３７は、特定の照会タームが同様の照会の中に共に出現した頻度に関する過去の情報を、含むかあるいは表わしていることが好ましい。
前記照会関連テーブル１３７の通常の形式が図１に示されている。図１に示し、ここで詳しく説明する実施例において、照会ターム間の相関関係は同様の照会内で出現する頻度にのみ基づいている。以下に述べるとおり、他のタイプの照会タームの相関関係を補助的に使うことができる。また、開示されたインプリメンテーションは照会ターム相関データを格納するために表を用いているが、他のタイプのデータベースを用いることもできる。
図１で示されているように、前記照会関連テーブル１３７中の各エントリー(二つのエントリーを示す)は二つの主要な構成要素、「キーとなる」ターム１４０とそのキーとなるタームに関する「関連ターム」リスト１４２を持っている。前記関連タームリスト１４２は、N個(例えば、５０)の最も高い頻度でキーワードと同じ照会内に出現した照会タームのリストであり、頻度の順に並べられている。例えば、キーとなるタームCOSMOS（以下で述べる一字の接頭タームは無視する）に関するエントリーは、
COSMOS: ASTRONOMY, SAGAN, UNIVERSE, ・・・
となっており、これはASTRONOMYが最も高い頻度でCOSMOSと共に出現しており、SAGANが二番目に高い頻度でCOSMOSと共に出現している等、を示している。前期関連タームリスト１４２内に現れている各タームは、それらが同様の照会内に出現する比較的高い頻度によって、対応するキーとなるターム１４０に関連していると思われる。
さらに図１で示されているように、各関連タームと各キーとなるターム１４０はそのタームが対応する検索フィールド２１０、２２０、２４０を示す一文字のフィールドを示す接頭タームを含んでいることが好ましい。これらの接頭タームは、例えば、A=著者、T=タイトル、S=主題、R=アーティスト、L=商標、G=一般名称である。また、各関連タームは、実施の形態において（それぞれのフィールド接頭タームが示す検索フィールドの中で）関連タームがキーとなるタームと共に出現した回数を示す相関得点１４６と共に格納され、照会結果がヌルであった照会は数えない。
このように、例えば、（接頭語を含む）関連語S-ASTRONOMYは、キーとなるタームT-COSMOSの下では相関得点４１０を持っており、これはタイトルフィールド中のCOSMOSと主題フィールド中のASTRONOMYの組み合わせを含んだ４１０の「成功した」照会が（前記表１３７の対応する期間中に）受信されたことを示している。フィールド接頭語と相関得点１４６は（以下に述べるように）関連ターム選択プロセスに有益な情報を運ぶが、このような情報は保存される必要はない。
操作において、ユーザーがウェブサイト１３０に照会を送信する時、ウェブサーバー１３１は該照会を照会サーバー１３２に送り、前記照会サーバーは該照会を文献一覧データベース１３３に適用する。見つけられた品目数がある閾値（例えば、５０）を超える場合、前記照会サーバー１３２は関連ターム選択プロセス（「選択プロセス」）１３９を呼び出し、ユーザーに提案するひとつ以上の関連タームを特定しようと試みる。あるいは、この選択プロセスはある品目数に達したかどうかにかかわらず呼び出されてもよい。
照会中の各タームに対し、前記選択プロセス１３９は（もしあれば）照会関連テーブル１３７からのそれぞれの関連タームリスト１４２を検索し、もしリストが複数なら、これらのリストを併合する。前記選択プロセス１３９はそれから、その結果出されたリストの上位からあらかじめ決められた数（例えば、５)の関連タームを取り出し、これらの「提案されたターム」をウェブサーバー１３１に照会結果リストと共に送る。最後に、ウェブサーバー１３１がユーザーに提案されたタームを呈示して選択してもらう照会結果ページ（図９）を作成しユーザーに返信する。
ひとつの実施例においては、関連タームリストは共通するターム（全てのリストに共通するターム）のみを保持することにより併合される。この方法の重要な利点として、その結果のリストのどの関連タームひとつを取っても、ヌルの照会結果をもたらすことなしに照会に加えることができる。この特徴を利用して、これらの関連タームは、ユーザーに照会送信ひとつにつきひとつだけ関連タームを加えることを求める（図９のような）インターフェイス方法を使ってユーザーに呈示されることが好ましい。
以下、関連ターム選択プロセス１３９の操作をさらに詳しく説明する。
開示されたサーチエンジンはまた、ユーザーに呈示する照会結果を並べるために照会送信履歴と品目選択を使用することが好ましい。このようなデータに基づいて照会結果を並べる好ましい方法が、１９９８年3月１０日に提出された米国特許出願No.09/041,081に開示されている。前記サーチエンジンはまた、検索照会中のスペルの間違ったタームを訂正するために照会用ターム間の相関関係を利用することが好ましい。検索照会中のスペルの間違ったタームを訂正する好ましい方法が、１９９８年７月１５日に提出された、「検索照会におけるつづり間違いを訂正するシステムと方法」と題した米国特許出願No.09/115,662に開示されている。
II. 照会情報の取り込みと処理
上述のとおり、照会用ターム相関データは表作成プロセス（「作成プロセス」）１３６を用いて照会ログ１３５から作られることが好ましい。実施の形態においては、表作成プロセス１３６は一日に一度走り、新しい照会関連テーブル１３７を作成するオフラインプロセスとして実現される。該プロセスはM個の最も新しい毎日の照会ログファイル１３５（１）−１３５（M）から有効に表を作成する。比較的小さなM(例えば、５)を使うと短期購買傾向（例えば、新発売品、週間ベストセラー等）を強く反映した照会用ターム相関データとなりやすく、より大きなM(例えば、１００)を使うとより広範なデータベースになりやすい。あるいは、表は多数のログファイルから作られるが、最も新しいログファイルがより重きをおかれる混成のアプローチを使うこともできる。例えば、前の週の間に送信された照会は、相関得点１４６を付ける際に3回数えられ、一週間から１ヶ月前に送信された照会は１回のみ数えられる。また、連続したM日間の照会送信を利用するよりもむしろ、前記作成プロセス１３６は複数の異なる時期の照会送信のサンプルを使うだろう。
実施の形態において、前記照会関連テーブル１３７の構築は、（１）毎日のログファイルを作成し、（２）定期的にこれらのログファイルをパースし処理して前記照会関連テーブル１３７を作成するという二つの主要な段階から成る。ログ情報が入手可能になる度に新しい照会用ターム相関データを作成するよりむしろ、作成プロセス１３６は、比較的短い異なる構成期間の別々の照会用ターム相関データを作成し保存することが好ましい。実施の形態において、その構成期間は、一日分の照会用ターム相関データが一日の結果ファイルに格納されるように一日である。新しい構成期間の照会用ターム相関データが作成される度に、作成プロセス１３６は、この新しいデータをより以前の構成期間からの既存のデータと組み合わせて、より長い複合期間にわたる情報を持つ集合的照会相関表を作ることが好ましい。該プロセスは図６に示されており、以下、さらに説明する。
前記照会関連テーブル１３７を作成するためにさまざまな択一的方法のいずれをも用いることができる。例えば、作成プロセス１３６はユーザーが成功する照会を送信する度に表を増やすことによってリアルタイムで照会相関表を更新するように実現されるだろう。また、前記表作成プロセス１３６および、あるいはまたは、選択プロセス１３９は、ユーザーの行動に依存しない付帯的、あるいは「静的な」相関関係を含む照会用ターム間のほかのタイプの相関関係を考慮に入れるだろう。
A. 毎日の照会ログファイルの作成
ウェブサーバーは一般にウェブブラウザから受信した要求の全てを詳述するログファイルを保存している。該ログファイルは一般に時系列でまとめられ、いくつかのエントリーからできており、その各々が異なる要求に関する情報を含んでいる。
本発明によると、ユーザーが検索をおこなう度に、ウェブサーバー１３１が送信された照会に関する情報を照会ログ１３５のログエントリーに保存する。また、ウェブサーバー１３１は各々がそれぞれの日のログエントリーを含む毎日の照会ログファイル１３５（１）−１３５（M）を作成する。図３は一日の照会ログファイル１３５のサンプルの４つのエントリーを示している。ログファイル１３５の中の各エントリーは、特有のHTTP（ハイパーテキスト・トランスファー・プロトコル）トランザクションに関する情報を含んでいる。第一のログエントリー３１０はユーザーが該照会を送信した時の日時の情報、ユーザーの身分証明書にあたるユーザー識別（および、いくつかの実施例では、ウェブサーバーとの個々の対話による本人確認）、該照会が入力されたウェブページの名称、ユーザーによって入力された照会用ターム、および照会に対して見つけられた品目の数を含んでいる。ログの中で「見つけられた品目」の値は正確に照会と一致した品目の数を示すことが好ましい。
例えば、エントリー３１０は1998年2月13日午前2時23分にユーザー２９３８４７１９２８７が照会｛タイトル＝Snow Crash｝を書籍検索ページから送信し、該照会にぴったり合った二冊の本が見つかったことを示している。エントリー３２０は同じユーザーが約20秒後にISBNが０５５３５６２６１４である本を選択し、(HTTP_REFERERの行から明らかなように)この選択が検索結果ページからなされたことを示している。例えばショッピングカートに商品をいれるとかある商品を購入するという要求のような他のタイプのユーザーの行動は、同様に照会ログ１３５の中で反映される。上記例によって示されたように、あるユーザーの進む経路は照会ログ１３５の中のエントリーを比較することによって知ることができる。
B. 相関表の作成
図４は照会関連テーブル１３７を作成する好ましい方法を示している。ステップ４１０で、作成プロセス１３６は最も新しい一日の照会ログファイルを調べ、照会結果において少なくとも一つの品目を返信された（「見つけられた品目」＞０）複数タームから成る照会（例えば、一タームより多いタームから成る照会）の全てを特定する。ステップ４２０で、前記作成プロセス１３６は一連の照会の中で見つけられた各照会の（「キーとなる」）タームをある照会の中でキーとなるタームと共に使われた関連タームと関係づけ、該関連タームに相関得点１４６を割り当てる。前記相関得点は、特定のタームが一日の照会ログに反映される期間の間に同様の照会の中で過去に共に出現した頻度を示している。ステップ４３０で、前記作成プロセス１３６は相関得点を付けられたタームを一日の結果ファイルに保存する。ステップ４４０で、前記作成プロセス１３６は最近Ｍ日間の毎日の結果ファイルを併合する。最後にステップ４５０で、前記作成プロセス１３６は新しい照会関連テーブル１３７を作成し、既存の参照相関表と置き換える。
実施の形態において、前記作成プロセス１３６は、最も新しい一日の照会ログが閉じられた直後、夜中に一日一度実行される。また、Ｍ−１個の最新の毎日の照会ログはすでに、それぞれの一日の結果ファイルを作成するプロセスのステップ４１０−４３０によって処理されているものとする。
図４のプロセスのステップ４１０−４５０のそれぞれをここでより詳しく説明する。
ステップ１ 一日の照会ログファイルの処理
上記のとおり、前記作成プロセス１３６はステップ４１０で一日の照会ログファイルをパースして、成功した複数タームの照会を特定して抽出する。照会結果がヌルになった（見つけられた品目＝０）照会送信を無視すると、（１）キーワードとしてであっても関連タームとしてであっても、不一致のタームが相関表に加えられるのを防ぎ、（２）一致するタームの間の潜在的に「弱い」相関関係を考慮から除くといった重要な利点がある。また、以下に述べるように、このような「不成功の」照会送信を排除すると、照会用ターム選択プロセス１３９を修正された照会が成功の照会結果（例えば、品目数がゼロより多い照会結果）をもたらすことを保証するように実現できる。
一例として図３のログシーケンスを用いると、前記作成プロセス１３６はログエントリー３１０から始めてサンプルの一日の照会ログファイル１３５をパースする。前記作成プロセス１３６は、最初のログエントリー３１０の照会がひとつより多い照会用タームを含んでおり、「見つけられた品目」がゼロより多いので、該照会を抽出する。次に、前記作成プロセス１３６は、エントリー３２０が照会用タームを含んでいないので無視する。それから前記作成プロセス１３６は、複数の照会用タームはあるが見つけられた品目数がゼロより多くないので、エントリー３３０を無視する。次に、前記作成プロセス１３６は、ログエントリー３４０を抽出し、一日の照会ログファイル１３５を調べ続ける。いくつかの実施例では、どの照会送信を抽出するべきかとかその照会にどのくらい重きをおくべきかを決めるために、照会フィールドやユーザーのとる次の行動のような他の情報が使われてもよい。また、情報を照会ログから抽出するために他の方法が使われてもよい。
ステップ２ 相関ターム
本発明によると、前記作成プロセス１３６は、まず抽出された照会をそれぞれ取り上げ、各照会用タームに対して該照会用タームが入力された検索フィールドを示す一文字のフィールド接頭ターム(「接頭ターム」)を加える。このように、例えば、すでに列挙された接頭タームを使って、ログエントリー３１０では接頭ターム「T」が「SNOW」と「CRASH」に付けられ、ログエントリー３４０では接頭ターム「S」が「OUTDOOR」と「TRAIL」に付けられる。このプロセスの間、異なる検索フィールドで送信された同一のタームは異なる接頭タームを付けられ、異なるタームとして扱われる。例えば、接頭ターム「T」の付いた単ターム「SNOW」は接頭ターム「S」の付いた単ターム「SNOW」とは違うものとして扱われる。ここで述べられるインプリメンテーションにおいて、ケースの情報を択一的に保存できるけれども、キーとなるタームと関連タームはアルファベットのケースに関係なく保存される。
それから前記作成プロセス１３６は、照会の中に見つけられた各照会の(「キーとなる」)タームとその照会と共に使われた他のターム(「関連ターム」)に付けられたその接頭タームの図表を作る。関連タームがキーとなるタームと共に出現した回数に基づく図表化の際、相関得点は各関連タームについて保存される。M日間にわたって取られた相関得点の最終的な値は照会関連テーブル１３７の中に図１に示された相関得点１４６として格納される。
例えば、ユーザーがタイトルフィールド２２０で「ROUGH GUIDE TO LONDON」という参照を送信する場合、そのタームはまず接頭ターム「T」を付けられる。キーとなる「T-ROUGH」を基準として、「T-GUIDE」、「T-TO」、「T-LONDON」に対する図表化の際の相関得点は一定量増やされる。同様に、関連タームに対する相関得点もキーとなる「T-GUIDE」、「T-TO」、「T-LONDON」の下に一定量増やされる。
図５Aは作表の一例である。この図では、前記作成プロセス１３６はすでに何千ものログエントリーを処理しているものとする。表１３７Aに格納された各キーとなるターム１４０に対し、関連タームリスト１４２があり、リスト中の各関連タームは接頭タームと相関得点を示す値１４６を付けられている。キーとなるターム１４０と関連ターム１４２が参照の中で共に使われる度に、関連タームの値１４６が一定量増やされる。
表作成プロセス１３６が主題フィールドで送信された参照「OUTDOOR BIKE TRAIL」をパースするとする。図５Aは該参照が加えられる前の図表を示している。該参照に応じて、前記作成プロセス１３６は図表１３７Aを更新して図５Bに示された図表１３７Bを作成する。前記作成プロセス１３６はまず、キーとなるターム「S-OUTDOOR」５６０を調べ、それから関連ターム「S-BIKE」５８０と「S-TRAIL」５９０を探す。関連タームが見つかれば、その値は一定量増やされる。関連タームが見つからなければ、前記作成プロセス１３６は関連タームを追加し、最初の値を付ける。図５Ｂに示された例において、「S-BIKE」５８０と「S-TRAIL」５９０の両方に対する値は１づつ増やされている。キーとなるターム「T-OUTDOOR」の下に、単ターム「S-TRAIL」に対する値は増やされたが、単ターム「T-TRAIL」に対する値は増やされなかった。これは該照会が主題フィールドで送信されたためであり、その結果、接頭ターム「S」のついたタームのみに影響があった。
いくつかの実施の形態において、あるキーとなるタームがしばしば使われるのに検索改善プロセスの助けにならない場合、図表から除外されてもよい。例えば、「THE」、「A」、「TO」、「OF」などのよく使われるタームは図表から除外されてもよい。図５Aには３つのエントリーが部分的に示されているだけであるが、何千ものエントリーが一般的な一日の結果ファイルに保存される。好ましい実現において、一日の照会ログファイルに関する図表はビー・ツリー・データ構造に格納される。他の実施例においては、リンク式リスト、データベース、あるいは他のタイプのデータ構造をビー・ツリーの代わりに用いることができる。
また、相関得点が増やされる量は照会結果の中で特定された品目に関してユーザーのとるさまざまな種類の選択行動によって増減されてもよい。これらにはユーザーが商品に関する情報をさらに表示したかどうか、ユーザーがその商品に関する追加的情報を見るのにどのくらい時間を費やしたか、ユーザーがその商品に関する追加的情報を見るのにいくつのハイパーリンクを続けたか、ユーザーがその商品を買い物かごに加えたかどうか、およびユーザーが最終的にその商品を購入したかどうかが含まれていてもよい。例えば、ある照会送信は、ユーザーが続けて照会結果ページから商品を選択した場合、（例えば相関得点を２点ずつ増やすことにより）２回数えることができ、ユーザーがそれからその商品を購入したかその商品を買い物かごに加えた場合、３回数えることができる。これらの検索後の行動や他のタイプのものは照会結果の有用性を表しており、周知の追跡方法で照会ログ１３５から抽出することができる。
ステップ３ 一日の結果ファイルを作成する
図表化が完成したら、すなわち一日の照会ログファイルの中の全てのエントリーがパースされたなら、作成プロセス１３６は一日の結果ファイルを作り（ステップ４３０）、ビー・ツリーに格納する。他の実施例では、一日の結果ファイルはプロセスのもっと早い段階で作成されてもよく、パースがおこなわれる時に増加的に更新されてもよい。
ステップ４ 毎日の結果ファイルを併合する
ステップ４４０で、作成プロセス１３６はある合成の期間の照会関連テーブル１３７を、その合成期間の間の毎日の結果ファイルのエントリーを結合することによって作成する。図６に示されているように、表作成プロセス１３６は照会関連テーブル１３７を、Ｍが１０や２０などの固定された数である場合に、Ｍ個の最も新しい毎日の結果ファイルから一日の基準に基づき再作成する。毎日、ステップ４３０で作られた一日の結果ファイルは照会関連テーブル１３７を作るために最近のＭ-1個の毎日の結果ファイルに併合される。
例えば、図６で、作成プロセス１３６が１９９８年２月７日の一日の結果ファイル６１０を作成し、最近７日間（Ｍ=7）の新しい照会相関表を作成するように設定されているとする。１９９８年２月７日の終わりに、作成プロセス１３６が新しい照会関連テーブル１３７Ａを作成するために１９９８年２月１日から７日の合成期間に関する過去７日間の毎日の結果ファイルを併合する。１９９８年２月８日の終わりに、作成プロセス１３６が１９９８年２月８日の一日の結果ファイル６３０を作成し、それから新しい照会関連テーブル１３７Ｂを作成するために１９９８年２月２日から８日の合成期間に関する過去７日間の毎日の結果ファイルを併合する。エントリーが併合される時、対応するエントリーの得点が例えば合計することによって結合される。ひとつの実施例において、より最近の毎日の結果ファイルにおける得点はより前の毎日の結果ファイルにおける得点より重きをおかれ、そのため照会用ターム相関データは古い照会送信よりも最近の照会送信の方を強く反映する。この「引き戸」的アプローチは最近の照会送信のみに基準をおいた照会相関表を都合よく作り出し、このようにしてユーザーの現在の好みを反映する。例えば、比較的多数のユーザーがJon Krakauer作「Into Thin Air」という本を検索した場合、「T-INTO」、「T-THIN」、「T-AIR」と「A-KRAKAUER」の間の相関関係がそれに応じて高くなりそうである。これらのタームの部分セットからなる照会はこうして他のタームを含む関連タームリストを作りやすい。
ステップ５ 古い照会相関表を新しい照会相関表に置き換える
ステップ４５０で、ひとたび毎日の結果ファイルが併合されたなら、作成プロセス１３６が関連タームリストを得点の高い方から並べ替える。それから作成プロセス１３６は関連タームリストを決められた長さN(例えばN=50)になるように切り、照会相関表を効率よく調べられるようにビー・ツリーに格納する。それから新しい照会関連テーブル１３７のビー・ツリーは既存の照会相関表の代わりにRAM(ランダム・アクセス・メモリ)中のキャッシュメモリに入れられる。
III. 表を使って関連タームを生成する
上述したとおり、照会サーバー１３２は照会関連テーブル１３７を使ってユーザーに提案する関連タームを選択する。より具体的には、ユーザーが所定数より多い品目を特定する検索をおこなった場合、関連ターム選択プロセス（「選択プロセス」）１３９が照会相関表から生み出された一連の関連タームと共に照会に合う照会結果リスト品目を返信する。この方法の重要な利点は、とても効率のよいことで、照会結果ページをあまり遅れることなく返信できる。さらに、関連ターム選択プロセスによって加えられる少しの遅れは、（品目数が閾値に達しているかどうかを知るために待つよりもむしろ）文献一覧データベース１３３の検索と同時に任意で関連タームを生成することによって完全に回避できる。
図７は選択プロセス１３９によっておこなわれるステップの順序を表している。選択プロセス１３９はまず、選択プロセス１３９が相関表の照会用タームを調べるループ（ステップ７１０−７４０）に入り、それからそのタームの関連タームリスト１４２を検索する。これは照会中の各タームに対して続けられる。次に、該照会が複数のタームを含んでいる場合、ステップ７６０で、選択プロセス１３９はそれらの関連タームリストを組み合わせる。該リストは関連タームリストの共通項を取り（例えば、全てのリストには出現しないタームを削除して）、残ったタームの相関得点を合計することによって結合されることが好ましい。この点で、リストに残るいずれのタームも、少なくともひとつの以前に成功した照会の中に、本照会のいずれのタームとも共に現れたことのあるタームである。このように、合成の期間（前記表１３７が適用される期間）の初めからエントリーが文献一覧データベース１３３から削除されていないとすると、これらのタームのどれでも、照会結果をヌルにすることもなく本照会に個々に加えることができる。他の実施例において、選択プロセス１３９は関連タームリストを他の関連タームリストと共通するタームの相関得点を合計することにより、いずれのタームも削除することなく結合する。別の実現では、ひとつより多い関連タームリストに現れるタームに一つの関連タームリストにのみ現れるタームよりも重みを付けるよう共通するタームに対し大きな得点を与えるかもしれない。
ステップ７７０で、選択プロセス１３９はリストから最高値を持つX個のタームを選択し、この時Xはどんな数でもかまわない。ひとつの実施例において、選択プロセス１３９は関連タームのフィールドを示す接頭タームに関わらず上位Ｘ個の関連タームを選び出す。あるいは前記選択プロセスは、本照会の検索フィールドに対応する関連タームのみを選択するよう構成されていてもよい。例えば、該照会が主題フィールド２４０（図２）に入力された場合、ユーザーは他の主題のターム（接頭ターム「S」の付いた関連ターム）のみを呈示されるだろう。
一タームの照会に関しては、選択プロセス１３９は表から上位X個のタームを検索する。図８Ａは、主題フィールド中の「TRAIL」という一タームの照会に対して図５Ｂの図表を使って生成された関連タームを示している。選択プロセス１３９はキーとなるターム「S-TRAIL」５７０を調べ、上位Xの値を持つX個の関連タームを選択する。例えば、選択プロセス１３９が、本照会の検索フィールドに対応する3つの関連ターム（Ｘ=3）を提案するよう構成されているとする。このとき選択プロセス１３９はキーとなるターム「S-TRAIL」５７０を調べ、図８Ａに示すように、トップ３の値８１０を持ち、キーとなるタームと同じ接頭タームを持つ３つの関連タームを表示する。
複数のタームから成る照会に関しては、選択プロセス１３９は照会用タームそれぞれに対する関連タームリスト１４２を得て、それからこれらのリストの共通項を取る。図８Ｂは、図５Ｂの図表を使って得た、主題フィールドにおける「OUTDOOR TRAIL」という複数のタームから成る照会に関する関連タームの結果を示している。選択プロセス１３９はキーとなるターム「S-OUTDOOR」５６０と「S-TRAIL」５７０を調べ、それらが共通の関連タームを持っているかどうかを調べる。該図表の中で、関連ターム「S-BIKE」、「S-SPORTS」、「S-VACATION」はキーとなるターム「S-OUTDOOR」５６０と「S-TRAIL」５７０の下に見つけられる。このように「S-BIKE」、「S-SPORTS」、「S-VACATION」は、図８Ａに示すように、共通するターム８２０である。それから選択プロセス１３９は、同じ接頭タームを持ち、トップXの合計された相関得点を持つＸ個の共通するタームを表示する。共通する関連タームがXより少ない場合、選択プロセス１３９は接頭タームにかまわず共通するタームを示すか、他の基準を使って残りの関連タームを作るだろう。例えば、前記プロセス１３９は最も高い合計された相関得点を持つ上位V個のタームを共通しない関連タームから取り出すが、このようなタームは照会結果をヌルにするだろう。
上記のとおり、この方法は検索フィールド情報を保存したり考慮に入れることなく、選択的に実現できる。また、該方法は、照会結果の内容を用いる技術も含めて、関連タームを作り出す他の技術と適切に組み合わせることができる。
IV. ユーザーへの関連照会用タームの呈示
ユーザーに関連タームを呈示するための異なる方法が、上述した従来の方法（チェックボックスやドロップダウンメニュー）を含めていくつかある。重複する関連タームだけを提案する実現において、ユーザーにひとつの照会送信につきたったひとつの関連タームを加えるように要求するインターフェイスが使われることが好ましく、そのために修正された照会の照会結果はヌルにならない。
実施の形態において、関連タームは元の照会用タームとそれぞれの関連タームを組み合わせるハイパーテキストのリンクにより呈示される。例えば、ユーザーが主題フィールドに照会「ROUGH」を入力する場合、３つの追加的ハイパーリンクが照会結果ページに表示され、それぞれがユーザーにクリックされた時に修正された検索を作る。これらのリンクのそれぞれはユーザーの照会を関連タームと組み合わせることにより形成される（例えば、該３つのハイパーリンクは「ROUGH-GUIDE」、「ROUGH-LONDON」、「ROUGH-TERRAIN」であるかもしれない)。ユーザーがこれらのリンクのひとつをクリックすると、対応する修正された照会がサーチエンジンに送信される。このようにこの方法によると、ユーザーはひとつの動作(例えば、マウスを一回クリック)で修正された照会を選択して送信することができる。関連タームを生成する上記方法固有の利点としては、このようなリンクのそれぞれが少なくともひとつは「ヒット」することである。
図９はサンプルの照会結果ページ９００を示しており、その中でユーザーは「OUTDOOR TRAIL」というタームに関して主題フィールドの検索をおこない、３つの関連タームを受信し、その各関連タームはそれぞれのハイパーリンク９１０に組み入れられている。一般的にはそのページは照会結果品目リスト９２０も含んでいるだろう。ユーザーがハイパーリンク「OUTDOOR TRAIL−BIKE」をクリックした場合、サーチエンジンは「S-OUTDOOR」、「S-TRAIL」、「S-BIKE」を使って検索をおこない、それから関連するタームを返信するだろう。照会結果ページ９００はまたユーザーが照会を編集できる検索フィールド(図示せず)も持っていてもよい。
さまざまな補助的技術のいずれでもハイパーリンクをベースにしたインターフェイスと一緒に用いることができる。例えば、ひとつの実施例で、照会サーバー１３２は自動的に関連タームリストのトップにある関連ターム（例えば、図９の例では「BIKE」）を選択し、照会結果を検索してこの関連タームを含む照会結果品目の部分セットを特定する。照会サーバー１３２はそれにより効果的に「トップ」に提案された修正された照会を文献一覧データベース１３３に適用する。このプロセスはリスト中の他の関連タームを使って繰り返すことができる。該部分セット中の品目はユーザーに対して、照会結果リストの上位に表示され、および、あるいは又は、強調表示されることができる。さらに、照会サーバー１３２は部分セットの中に入る品目のリストをキャシュメモリに入れることができ、そのため、ユーザーが修正された照会を（例えば図９のリンク「OUTDOOR BIKE−TRAIL」をクリックすることにより)送信する場合、照会サーバーは修正された検索の結果を、文献一覧データベースを検索する必要なしに返信できる。照会サーバー１３２が修正された照会をキャシュメモリに入れられた結果と合致させることができるように、特別なタグやコードを修正された照会のハイパーリンクに埋め込み、ウェブサイト１３０に渡すことができる。
本発明はある実施の形態に関して述べられているが、当業者にとって明白な他の実施例もまた本発明の範囲内にある。従って、本発明の範囲は請求項に基づいてのみ定義される。
請求項では、プロセスのステップを示すために使われる参照記号が説明の都合上のためだけに付されており、ステップをおこなう特定の順序を意味するものではない。

Claims (26)

  1. ユーザーがアクセスしやすいサーチエンジンを実現するコンピュータシステムにおける、ユーザーを手助けして発見の向上を図るコンピュータにより実現されるステップから成る検索照会方法であって、
    （ａ） ある期間にわたって複数のユーザーによりサーチエンジンに送信された検索照会と、前記ユーザーの照会送信後の行動に関するデータとを処理し、照会ターム相関データを作成するステップであり、該照会ターム相関データが、照会タームが同様の検索照会の中に出現する頻度と、前記照会送信後の行動に基づいて、特定の検索照会がユーザーにとっていかに有益であるかとを表しており、
    （ｂ） ユーザーから検索照会を受信するステップであり、前記検索照会が少なくともひとつの照会タームを含んでおり、
    （ｃ） 少なくとも前記照会ターム相関データを使って、前記少なくともひとつの照会タームに関連すると思われる追加用照会タームを複数特定するステップ、そして
    （ｄ） ユーザーに前記複数の追加用照会タームを呈示し、ユーザーに検索照会を改善するよう選択してもらうステップ
    を含むことを特徴とする検索照会方法。
  2. 前記ステップ（ａ）が、ユーザーによる特定の検索照会送信について、前記ユーザーが前記検索照会送信に対応する照会結果項目を見るために選択したかどうかに、少なくとも部分的に基づいて、前記検索照会送信にどのくらい重みを与えるかを決定することを含むことを特徴とする請求項１記載の検索照会方法。
  3. 前記ステップ（ａ）が、ユーザーによる特定の検索照会送信について、前記ユーザーが前記検索照会送信の照会結果を見るために費やした時間に、少なくとも部分的に基づいて、前記検索照会送信にどのくらい重みを与えるかを決定することを含むことを特徴とする請求項１記載の検索照会方法。
  4. 前記ステップ（ａ）が、ユーザーによる特定の検索照会送信について、前記ユーザーが前記検索照会送信に対応する照会結果項目を購入するために選択したかどうかに、少なくとも部分的に基づいて、前記検索照会送信にどのくらい重みを与えるかを決定することを含むことを特徴とする請求項１記載の検索照会方法。
  5. ある期間にわたって前記相関データを再生成又は更新するステップをさらに含み、前記ユーザーへ呈示された前記追加用照会タームが、ある最新の期間にわたって最も頻繁に検索された項目に対応する傾向にあることを特徴とする請求項１記載の検索照会方法。
  6. 検索照会の対話形式による改善を容易にするために関連タームが生成され、関連タームがユーザーに提案されるサーチエンジンを実現するコンピュータシステムであって、
    キーとなるタームを、少なくとも照会送信履歴におけるタームの出現間の相関関係に基づいて、特定の検索照会が有益な結果を出したかどうかを反映する、ユーザーの照会送信後の行動に、更に基づいた関連タームと結びつけるデータ構造を生成する第一のプロセスと、
    前記データ構造をユーザーによって送信された検索照会と組み合わせて使い、ユーザーに提案する関連タームを選択する第二のプロセスと
    を含むことを特徴とするコンピュータシステム。
  7. 前記第一のプロセスが、有益な結果を出したと思われる検索照会を特定するためにユーザーの照会送信後の選択行動を評価し、そして有益な結果を出した検索照会に、より重み付けして前記データ構造を作成することを特徴とする請求項６記載のコンピュータシステム。
  8. ユーザーの前記照会送信後の行動が、対応する照会結果項目のユーザーの選択を含むことを特徴とする請求項６記載のコンピュータシステム。
  9. 前記第一のプロセスが、ある期間にわたって前記データ構造を再生成又は更新し、前記第二のプロセスによって提案された前記関連タームが、ある最新の期間にわたって最も頻繁に検索された項目に対応する傾向にあることを特徴とする請求項６記載のコンピュータシステム。
  10. ユーザーがアクセスしやすいサーチエンジンを実現するコンピュータシステムにおける、ユーザーを手助けして発見の向上を図るコンピュータにより実現されるステップから成る検索照会方法であって、
    （ａ） ユーザーから検索照会を受信するステップであって、前記検索照会が少なくともひとつの照会タームを含んでおり、
    （ｂ） 少なくとも検索照会履歴データを使って、前記少なくともひとつの照会タームに関連すると思われる追加用照会タームを複数特定するステップであって、前記検索照会履歴データは、以前に送信された検索照会と、特定の検索照会がユーザーにとっていかに有益であるかを反映する、ユーザーの照会送信後の行動とに基づいており、そして
    （ｃ） ユーザーに前記複数の追加用照会タームを呈示し、ユーザーに検索照会を改善するよう選択してもらうステップ
    を含むことを特徴とする検索照会方法。
  11. さらに、前記検索照会履歴データを生成するステップを含み、前記検索照会履歴データを生成する該ステップが、有益な結果を出したと思われる検索照会を特定するためにユーザーの照会送信後の行動を分析し、そして有益な結果を出した検索照会を他の検索照会よりも重く重み付けすることを特徴とする請求項１０記載の検索照会方法。
  12. ある期間にわたって前記検索照会履歴データを再生成又は更新するステップをさらに含み、前記ユーザーへ呈示された前記追加用照会タームが、ある最新の期間にわたって最も頻繁に検索された項目に対応する傾向にあることを特徴とする請求項１０記載の検索照会方法。
  13. ユーザーがアクセスしやすいサーチエンジンを実現するコンピュータシステムにおける検索照会を改善してユーザーを手助けする方法であって、
    ユーザーによって送信された検索照会を受信し、前記検索照会が少なくともひとつのタームから成り、
    ユーザーによって所定の期間にわたりサーチエンジンに送信された検索照会の履歴と、特定の検索照会がユーザーにとっていかに有益であるかを反映する、ユーザーの照会送信後の行動に関するデータとを使い、前記検索照会に対する少なくともひとつの改善を特定し、そして
    前記少なくともひとつの改善をユーザーに提案する過程を含むユーザーを手助けする方法。
  14. ユーザーの前記照会送信後の行動に基づいて、検索照会がユーザーにとって有益になるように、前記検索照会に対する前記少なくともひとつの改善が特定されることを特徴とする請求項１３記載のユーザーを手助けする方法。
  15. ユーザーの前記照会送信後の行動が、対応する照会結果項目のユーザーの選択を含むことを特徴とする請求項１３記載のユーザーを手助けする方法。
  16. ユーザーの前記照会送信後の行動が、対応する照会結果項目の、購入のためのユーザーの選択を含むことを特徴とする請求項１３記載のユーザーを手助けする方法。
  17. 検索照会送信の前記履歴を反映するデータ構造と、ユーザーの前記照会送信後の行動に関するデータとを生成し、前記データ構造を使用して前記少なくともひとつの改善を調べるステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項１３記載のユーザーを手助けする方法。
  18. サーチエンジンに送信された検索照会の改善においてユーザーを手助けするためのシステムであって、
    サーチエンジンの照会ログを処理し、同様の照会における照会タームの出現頻度と、ユーザーの照会送信後の行動を分析することにより評価されて、特定の検索照会がユーザーにとっていかに有益であるかとを表す相関データを作成する第一のプログラム・モジュールと、
    少なくとも前記相関データを使ってユーザーから受信した検索照会に対する改善を提案する第二のプログラム・モジュールとを含むことを特徴とするユーザーを手助けするためのシステム。
  19. 前記第一のプログラム・モジュールが、有益な結果を出したと思われる検索照会を特定するためにユーザーの照会送信後の行動を評価し、そして有益な結果を出した検索照会を他の検索照会よりも重く重み付けすることを特徴とする請求項１８記載のユーザーを手助けするためのシステム。
  20. 前記第一のプログラム・モジュールが、ある期間にわたって前記相関データを再生成又は更新し、前記第二のプログラム・モジュールによって提案された前記改善が、ある最新の期間にわたって最も頻繁に検索された項目に対応する傾向にあることを特徴とする請求項１８記載のユーザーを手助けするためのシステム。
  21. 第一のプログラム・モジュールが、照会結果がヌルとなった照会送信を無視することを特徴とする請求項１８記載のユーザーを手助けするためのシステム。
  22. 第一のプログラム・モジュールが、最新の一連の照会送信履歴から定期的に前記相関データを作成し、そのため第二のプログラム・モジュールによって提案された改善がユーザーの現在の興味を反映していることを特徴とする請求項１８記載のユーザーを手助けするためのシステム。
  23. 第二のプログラム・モジュールが、各提案された改善が改善された検索を始めるために選択できるそれぞれのリンクとして呈示されるユーザー・インターフェイスを使って、ユーザーに改善を呈示することを特徴とするユーザーを手助けするための請求項１８記載のシステム。
  24. 検索照会が第１の照会及び第２の照会を含み、ユーザーによって送信される前記検索照会を受信するステップと、
    前記第１の照会と前記第２の照会との関連度を表す得点であって、複数のユーザーの検索照会送信に基づく前記得点を作成する際に、前記検索照会送信に与える重み量を決定するステップとを含み、
    前記重み量が、前記ユーザーによって行われる一つ以上の照会送信後の行動に依存すること
    を特徴とするコンピュータにより実現される方法。
  25. 前記検索照会送信に与える前記重み量が、前記ユーザーが、対応する照会結果項目を見るために選択したかどうかに、少なくとも部分的に基づいていることを特徴とする請求項２４に記載のコンピュータにより実現される方法。
  26. 前記検索照会送信に与える前記重み量が、前記ユーザーが前記検索照会送信の照会結果を見るために費やした時間に、少なくとも部分的に基づいていることを特徴とする請求項２４に記載のコンピュータにより実現される方法。
