Abstract
高電界の発生が容易なITモード液晶表示装置を提供する。
【解決手段】
液晶表示装置は、対向配置された第1および第2の透明基板と、前記第1の基板の各画素領域上に形成された下側透明電極と、前記下側透明電極上に形成された電極間絶縁膜と、前記電極間絶縁膜を介して前記下側透明電極の一部領域上方に形成された上側透明電極と、前記上側透明電極を覆って、前記電極間絶縁膜上に形成された第1の水平配向膜と、前記第2の基板上に形成された第2の水平配向膜と、前記第1および第2の水平配向膜間に挟持され、オフ状態で厚さ方向に約90度のねじれを示すツイステッドネマチック液晶層と、前記第1および第2の透明基板外側に配置された第1および第2の偏光板と、を有する。

対向配置された第1および第2の透明基板と、
前記第1の基板の各画素領域上に形成された下側電極と、
前記下側電極上に形成された電極間絶縁膜と、
前記電極間絶縁膜を介して前記下側電極の一部領域上方に形成された上側電極と、
前記上側電極を覆って、前記電極間絶縁膜上に形成された第1の水平配向膜と、
前記第2の基板上に形成された第2の水平配向膜と、
前記第1および第2の水平配向膜間に挟持され、オフ状態で厚さ方向と共にツイストを示すネマチック液晶層と、
前記第1および第2の透明基板外側に配置された第1および第2の偏光板と、
を有する液晶表示装置
が提供される。

Claims (15)
- 対向配置された第1および第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板の各画素領域上に形成された下側電極と、
前記下側電極上に形成された電極間絶縁膜と、
前記電極間絶縁膜を介して前記下側電極の一部領域上方に形成された上側電極と、
前記上側電極を覆って、前記電極間絶縁膜上に形成された第1の水平配向膜と、
前記第2の基板上に形成された第2の水平配向膜と、
前記第1および第2の水平配向膜間に挟持され、オフ状態で厚さ方向にツイストを示すネマチック液晶層と、
を有し、前記第1および第2の基板の少なくとも一方は透明基板であり、前記第2の基板上には電極を有さない液晶表示装置。 - 前記上側電極が、前記下側電極上でストライプ状スリット領域を挟むように配置された電極である請求項1記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記上側電極、下側電極の少なくとも一方は透明電極である請求項1または2記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記下側電極が、第1の方向に沿って配置された複数の電極であり、
前記上側電極が、前記第1の方向と交差する第2の方向に沿って配置され、夫々ストライプ状開口を有する複数の電極である請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記ストライプ状開口が、各画素当り複数形成されている請求項4記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記ストライプ状開口が前記上側電極の延在方向に沿う方向に延在する請求項4または5記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記ストライプ状開口が前記上側電極の延在方向に直交する方向に延在する請求項4または5記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶層が正の誘電率異方性を有し、前記第1の水平配向膜のラビング方向が前記ストライプ状ス開口と平行な方向である請求項4〜7のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶層が負の誘電率異方性を有し、前記第1の水平配向膜のラビング方向が前記ストライプ状開口と直交する方向である請求項4〜7のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1および第2の基板は共に透明基板であり、前記下側電極、上側電極は共に透明電極であり、前記第1および第2の透明基板外側に配置された第1および第2の偏光板を有する請求項1〜9のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1および第2の水平配向膜が、直交方向にラビングされ、前記第1および第2の偏光板の透過軸が前記第1および第2の水平配向膜のラビング方向と夫々平行もしくは直交である請求項10記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1および第2の水平配向膜が、ラビングされず、前記第1および第2の偏光板の透過軸が平行もしくは直交である請求項4〜7のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記電極間絶縁膜が、酸化シリコン膜、窒化シリコン膜、有機系絶縁膜、これらの積層のいずれかである請求項1〜12のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶層が、カイラル剤を含む請求項1〜13のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記オフ状態のツイストが、全厚さで約90度である請求項1〜14のいずれか1項記載の液晶表示装置。
