Abstract
Description
液晶表示装置のパネルは、複数の画素がマトリックス状に形成された基板とそれに対向する基板とからなる。これら二つの基板の間には、異方性誘電性を有する液晶物質が注入される。前記二つの基板の間には、電界が印加され、この電界の強度を調節することによって基板を透過する光の量が制御されて所望の画像が表示される。
本発明は、前記のような従来の技術的問題点を解決するためのものであって、動画の視認性を改善するために、画像データの情報を受けて信号処理を行った後、該処理された画像データに基づいて、バックライトの輝度を処理するための適応型バックライト制御(adaptive backlight control:ABC)方式を提供することを目的とする。
特に、本発明は、パルス幅変調方式の駆動及びアナログ方式の駆動を、輝度制御信号の生成に用いる液晶表示装置を提供することをその目的とする。
前記本発明の目的、技術的構成及びその効果に関して、以下の実施例の説明を通じてより明確にする。
以下、本発明の実施例による液晶表示装置及びその駆動方法について図面を参照して詳細に説明する。
図1に示すように、本発明による液晶表示装置は、液晶パネルアセンブリ10、ゲート駆動部20、データ駆動部30、ランプ40、インバータ50、電圧発生部60及び信号制御部70を含む。
図3に示すように、本発明による液晶表示装置のインバータ50は、輝度制御部51、トランジスタ駆動部52、トランジスタQ1、コイルL及びランプ駆動部53で構成される。輝度制御部51は、第1輝度制御信号を生成する第1ブロック511、第2輝度制御信号を生成する第2ブロック512、及び第1ブロック511と第2ブロック512の信号を合成する合成部513で構成される。
合成部513からの信号は、トランジスタ駆動部52に提供されてトランジスタQ1の動作を制御し、トランジスタQ1は、コイルLを通じてランプ駆動部53に提供される電流の大きさを制御する。即ち、トランジスタQ1がオフ状態の間は、ランプ駆動部53へ電流が流れず、トランジスタQ1がオン状態の間は、合成部513から出力される信号の大きさに従って、ランプ駆動部53に流れる電流の大きさが制御される。
以上、本発明の好ましい実施例について詳細に説明したが、本発明の権利範囲はこれに限定されず、特許請求範囲で定義している本発明の基本概念を利用した当業者の様々な変形及び改良形態も本発明の権利範囲に属するものである。
Claims (5)
- 複数のゲートラインと、前記ゲートラインに交差する複数のデータラインと、前記各ゲートラインとデータラインの交差点に形成された画素とからなる液晶パネルアセンブリ、
外部のグラフィックソースから提供される画像データと同期信号とを受信して、前記液晶パネルアセンブリの駆動に必要な制御信号の生成及び前記画像データのフォーマット変換を行う信号制御部、
前記液晶パネルアセンブリの駆動に必要な階調電圧及びゲート電圧を生成する電圧発生部、
前記ゲート電圧に基づいて前記液晶パネルアセンブリのゲートラインを1水平走査期間単位で順次に走査するゲート駆動部、
前記液晶パネルアセンブリ上のデータライン毎に前記信号制御部からの画像データに対応する階調電圧を選択するデータ駆動部、
前記画像データの輝度分布に依存するアナログ値を有する第1輝度制御信号を生成し、フレーム周波数の整数倍に依存して決定されるパルスデューティ比を有する第2輝度制御信号を生成し、前記第1及び第2輝度制御信号を合成して、前記合成された信号に従ってランプ駆動信号を生成するインバータ、及び
前記インバータから出力される駆動信号に従ってオン及びオフの状態並びに発光強度が制御されるランプ
を含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記インバータは、
前記画像データの輝度分布に依存するアナログ値を有する前記第1輝度制御信号を生成する第1ブロック、
前記同期信号の周波数に依存して決定されるパルスデューティ比を有する前記第2輝度制御信号を生成する第2ブロック、及び
前記第1ブロックと第2ブロックで生成された前記第1及び第2輝度制御信号を合成する合成部
を含み、
前記液晶表示装置は、さらに
前記合成部から出力される信号に従って電流を生成するトランジスタ回路、及び
前記トランジスタ回路から供給される電流に基づいて高電圧のランプ駆動信号を生成するランプ駆動部
を含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1ブロックは、前記画像データを輝度分布に基づいてカウントし、前記カウント結果から予め設定された輝度範囲に属する画像データの数を求め、この結果を基準テーブルに予め保存したデータと比較して、前記第1輝度制御信号を生成することを特徴とする請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1ブロックは、1水平走査期間単位で画像データの輝度分布をカウント及び計算することを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1ブロックは、アナログ調光制御を利用し、前記第2ブロックは、パルス幅変調による調光制御を利用することを特徴とする請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
