Abstract
クロン帯の分散シフト光ファイバを提供すること。 【解決手段】 コア領域aはGeO2を高濃度に添加し
たものである。コア領域bは純粋SiO2ガラスからな
っている。クラッド部3はコア領域の周囲に配されてい
る。クラッド部3には、光ファイバの長手方向に延びる
多数の空孔4が形成されている。クラッド部3の空孔4
の位置は、無秩序ではなく一辺の長さが∧である正六角
形を基本格子とするハニカム形状を構成している。コア
領域1,2の中心に、このコア部1,2の周辺部より屈
折率の高い領域3を有し、この領域3の動作波長におけ
る群速度分散が正常分散となるようなコア領域1,2の
屈折率分布を有する。
Description
イバに関し、より詳細には、光通信ネットワークおよび
光信号処理に用いられる分散シフト光ファイバに関す
る。

る。クラッド部23の空孔24の位置は無秩序ではな
く、一辺の長さが∧である正六角形を基本格子とするハ
ニカム形状を構成している。ここで、空孔24の直径を
dとする。
られた空孔24によって、その有効屈折率がコア部21
の屈折率より低くなり、その結果として、コア部21を
導波するモードが閉じこめられることにより伝搬する。
この構造において波長1.55μm付近で零分散となる
波長分散特性を実現するためには、この光ファイバを構
成する材料(例えば、SiO2ガラス)の材料分散を補
償する導波路分散をクラッド部の空孔による導波路分散
で補償する必要がある。これには、例えば、∧=1.6
μm、d=0.8μmとすることで実現可能である。
長分散特性を示す図である。この図11から、波長1.
55μm付近に零分散波長が存在することがわかる。ま
た、現在、光通信用媒体として広く用いられている分散
シフトファイバと異なり、分散スロープ(波長を横軸に
とった場合の波長分散の傾き)の符号が負となっている
ことが特徴的である。
分散シフト光ファイバには以下のような欠点があった。
プが負の領域(長波長側程分散が減少する)を用いてい
るため、伝搬モードの閉じこめ効果が弱く、長波長にな
るほど損失が増加するという欠点がある。また、図10
に述べたような光ファイバの構造を一部変化させ、コア
部の中心に、例えば、GeO2をドープしてコアの周辺
部より屈折率を高くした構造においても、クラッド部の
構造分散の効果によって零分散を実現している場合に
は、図10に示したような構造と同様に長波長で光損失
が増加するという欠点がある。
失波長特性については図12に示す。(K.P.Hanse

ber with zero dispersion at 1.55 μm”,OFC 200
2,Post Deadline Paper,FA9(2002))。
波長側で急激に損失が増加しており、1.6μmにおい
ては約100dB/kmの大きな損失となっている。こ
の特性は、計算機解析でも同様の結果が得られている。
また、光の閉じこめ効果が弱いためマイクロベンド損失
が生じやすく、従来技術を用いたケーブル化では低損失
伝送路を構成することが困難であった。さらに、同様な
理由から曲げ損失を生じやすく、本光ファイバを光部品
として用いる際に小径にファイバを収納して使用するこ
とが困難であった。
シフトファイバの場合コア径が約2.4μmと、一般的
に使用されている単一モードファイバの場合の10μ
m、通常用いられている光ファイバの場合の8〜10μ
mと比較して小さなため、これらのファイバとの接続損
失が数dB以上と大きなことがあげられる。

イバを提供することにある。

屈折率分布と同様であることを特徴とする。

孔の径又は配列、コア部の形状、屈折率分布のうちの少
なくとも1つを、前記コア部の中心を対称軸とする3回
未満の軸対称性としていることを特徴とする。
は、コア部の中心部にドーパントを添加することにより
高い比屈折率差を持つ領域を有し、1.55μm帯にお
いて大きな負の分散(正常分散)を有する分散補償ファ
イバのクラッド領域に格子状の空孔を形成し、この空孔
が存在することによる大きな異常分散を持つ導波路分散
の効果とつり合わせることにより、波長1.55μm帯
において零分散かつ低分散スロープを有する分散シフト
ファイバを実現することができる。ここで、空孔の効果
によって生ずる導波路分散の分散スロープは、正または
零であることが望ましい。
施例について説明する。 [実施例1]図1は、本発明の分散シフト光ファイバの
実施例1を説明するための断面構造図で、図中符号1は
GeO2を高濃度に添加したコア領域a、2は純粋Si
O2ガラスからなるコア領域b、3はコア領域の周囲に
配されたクラッド部、5はジャケット部を示している。
クラッド部3には、光ファイバの長手方向に延びる多数
の穴(以下、空孔という)4が形成されている。

のとき、空孔4が存在しない場合には、コア領域aとコ
ア領域bから構成される光導波路の導波路分散の効果と
材料分散の効果によって−22ps/km/nmに正常
分散を持つ。

SiO2ガラスで構成されたコア領域bおよびクラッド
部の屈折率がn=1.45であるのに対して、空孔部分
4の屈折率はn=1である。空孔4によりクラッド部3
の平均屈折率が低下し(1<n<1.45)、これによ
ってもコア部1および2を伝搬する光が閉じこめられ
る。
搬するモードに大きな正の構造分散(異常分散)を生じ
させることが可能である。構造分散の大きさは、空孔4
の間隔∧と空孔4の直径dをパラメータに選び変化させ
ることにより変えることができる。

フトファイバを実現することができる。この光ファイバ
の波長分散特性を図3に示す。図3の破線は空孔のない
場合の波長分散特性を示し、実線は上述した大きさの空
孔を設けた場合の波長分散特性を示している。

わかる。波長1.55μmで零分散となる、2a、Δ、
∧、dの値はここにあげた組み合わせに限らず、様々な
値の組み合わせで実現することができる。
プ型の屈折率分布の場合について示したが、2乗型やα
乗(α>2)、スーパーガウシアン等の屈折率分布であ
っても構わない。
長程度まで小さくすることによっても、波長1.55μ
mで零分散とすることができるが、この構造では従来技
術の項で述べたように、コア領域を伝搬する光の閉じこ
めが極端に弱くなり急激な損失増加を生じてしまう。
1ではステップ型の屈折率分布であったコア部aの屈折
率分布を二重クラッド型もしくは三重クラッド型にした
ものである。屈折率分布の例を図4(a),(b)に示
す。図4(a)は、二重クラッド型の屈折率分布、図4
(b)は、三重クラッド型の屈折率分布を示す。空孔4
がない場合には、図4(a),(b)に示す屈折率分布
は良く知られた分散補償ファイバの屈折率分布と等価で
ある。このような屈折率分布とすることによって大きな
正常分散を持つ光ファイバを実現することができる。
よび2の周りにほぼ規則正しく配列された空孔4を設け
ることにより、コア領域の寄与による正常分散を空孔4
の配列による異常分散で補償することができ、結果とし
て波長1.55μmで零分散となるファイバを実現する
ことができる。空孔の効果による異常分散の分散スロー
プは、実施例1で示したように正となる。

スロープの寄与(負の分散スロープ)と互いに打ち消し
あうことが可能である。したがって、ファイバの構造パ
ラメータを適切に選ぶと、波長1.55μmで零分散か
つ分散フラット(分散スロープが零)な光ファイバを実
現することが可能である。図5に本発明のファイバの波
長分散特性を示す。破線が空孔の存在しない場合の波長
分散特性、実線が本光ファイバの波長分散特性を示して
いる。
構造の分散補償ファイバにおいては、伝搬モードの閉じ
こめ効果が通常の単一モードファイバと比べて弱くなる
ため、マイクロベンド損失や曲げ損失を生じやすくその
扱いが難しいという欠点を有していた。
よると、光ファイバを伝搬するモードが空孔4に囲まれ
たコア領域1および2に強く局圧するために、光ファイ
バの曲げによる放射モード損失やマイクロベンド損失が
実用上問題とならない値にまで減少する。したがって、
従来通りのケーブル化を行っても損失増加が無視でき、
許容曲げ半径が従来ファイバと比較して小さくできるの
で、装置内部のファイバの収納や引き回しに対する制限
も小さくなる。

が異なるため、図7に示したx軸方向とy軸方向の等価
屈折率に異方性を生じる。その結果、x方向とy方向に
振動面を持つ伝搬モードに大きな複屈折を生じる。大き
な複屈折があるため、x方向の偏波モードからy方向の
モードへの偏波クロストークもしくはその逆のクロスト
ークが減少し、結果としてx方向もしくはy方向の偏波
モードが保持されたまま伝搬する。コア領域aの屈折率
がコア領域bに等しい場合の例が、川西、岡本「偏波保
持光ファイバ」(特願2001−59033)に記述さ
れている。
基づいて作成した光ファイバの波長分散特性の一例が、
K.Suzuki,他“ Optical properties of a low-loss
polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber
”,Optics Express, vol. 9,No. 13, p.676(2001) に
示されている。これによると、波長1.55μmで約+
70ps/km/nmの大きな異常分散が得られてい
る。
1.55μmで零分散を実現するには、コア領域1にG
eO2を高濃度に添加し、コア領域の導波路構造に基づ
く負の導波路分散(正常分散)を発生させ、前述の空孔
による正の分散を補償すれば良い。例えば、コア領域a
の比屈折率差Δを2%、直径を2.2μm、空孔aの直
径を2μm、空孔bの直径を4μm、空孔の間隔∧を4
μmとすると、波長1.55μm付近で波長分散が零と
なる。

ている。両モードに対する零分散波長が異なっているも
ののそれぞれ1.55μm付近に零分散波長が存在する
ことがわかる。両者の波長分散特性の相違は、空孔aと
bの直径が大きく異なることに起因する。
はステップ型の屈折率分布を仮定したが、2乗型やα乗
(α>2)、スーパーガウシアン等の屈折率分布であっ
ても構わない。

屈折率分布を二重クラッド型もしくは三重クラッド型に
したものである。屈折率分布の形状の一例は、図4に示
したものである。実施例2において説明したように、こ
のような屈折率分布を有する光ファイバの波長分散特性
は、適当な構造パラメータを選ぶことによって波長1.
55μm付近で正常分散(負)かつ負の分散スロープを
有するように設定することができる。
の光ファイバに適用することによって、クラッド部に開
けられた空孔によって生ずる異常分散(正の分散)かつ
正の分散スロープを同時に補償することができ、1.5
5μmにおいてほぼ零分散かつ低分散スロープな分散シ
フト光ファイバを実現することができる。この構造に基
づいて作成した光ファイバの波長分散特性の一例を図9
に示す。
2つの偏波モードに対応する波長分散特性を示した図で
ある。ここでは、互いに直交する伝搬モードのうち、一
方のモードが、波長1.55μmにおいて零分散となっ
ている。このときの分散スロープは、0.02ps/k
m/nmと通常の分散シフチ光ファイバの1/3以下の
小さな値となっている。
伝搬モードの閉じ込めが強いため、直径10mm程度の
曲げに対しても光損失の増加は見られない。また、伝搬
モードの閉じこめが長波長側で徐々に弱くなることに起
因する長波長側での損失増加も見られない。
ア部の中心に、コア部の周辺部より屈折率の高い領域を
有し、領域の動作波長における群速度分散が正常分散と
なるようなコア部の屈折率分布を有するので、伝搬モー
ドの閉じこめ効果の強い分散シフトファイバを実現する
ことができる。また、光ファイバの曲げによる光損失が
生じにくいので、本光ファイバを装置の内部等に収容す
る場合に、その装置の小型化を図ることができる。さら
に、コア部の屈折率分布の最適化を図ることによって、
広い波長領域において低分散な光ファイバを実現するこ
とができ、これを用いた光デバイスの特性の向上を図る
ことができる。

- 【請求項1】 クラッド部の長手方向に沿って多数の空
孔を形成し、該空孔が幾何学的に配列されている分散シ
フト光ファイバにおいて、 コア部の中心に、該コア部の周辺部より屈折率の高い領
域を有し、該領域の動作波長における群速度分散が正常
分散となるようなコア部の屈折率分布を有することを特
徴とする分散シフト光ファイバ。 - 【請求項2】 前記コア部の屈折率分布は、マッチドク
ラッド型、W型、三重クラッド型、四重クラッド型のい
ずれかの光ファイバのコア部及びクラッド部の屈折率分
布と同様であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の分散
シフト光ファイバ。 - 【請求項3】 前記クラッド部に形成された空孔の径又
は配列、コア部の形状、屈折率分布のうちの少なくとも
